As an iron golem got into an altercation with a crew member that resulted in them lethally killing the crew member.
As opposed to non-lethally killing them?

Logs might shed some light on this but my thinking is if non-sec get involved in other players conflict they open themself up to the same level of escalation.

Also how unrobust were those players that they used lethals first and both died?

Golems can't even use guns!

okay so golem or not

if a nonantag mistakes you for a traitor and attacks you, are you supposed to just lie down and take it now

guess I'm not allowed to kill someone that's actively attacking me

No you can only kill the person that you validly escalated but anyone standing nearby without an accurate assessment of the situation can kill you and you have to sit there and die.

okay so
if a nonantag is attacked by another nonantag and kills their attacker, that's fine
if another nonantag witnesses this and attacks the survivor and is killed too, that's suddenly not?
What would happen if the defending player lost? Would it be valid (because defending yourself against a lethal attack with lethal force makes you valid apparently) or would the third-party get banned for killing a nonantag?

If I, a nonantag player witnessing a fight with no context, attack the survivor and someone ends up dead, why should the person I attacked be on the hook for a ban if I lose if I'm not on the hook for nonantag murder if I win?

If golems are subject to relaxed escalation in both directions then that pushes things even more in the direction of "nobody should get banned" than if it were a crewmember.

Its the middle of science, the mecca of powergaming makes this approach trivial. Simply build a 3-machine gate teleporter with a grid independent hacked APC if fearful of AI intervention. Kevinz revoked the AI's ability to do anything about unrestrained technology aeons ago in deleting technodes, or much least saboteurs can gather the nessecary resources from the teleporter room and anything else out of the ore silo.

Having a golem out and about to scout as a spotter with a marked teleporter beacon in a concealed place for a co-ordinate to lay down helps or just land in normal convenience spots. Instantly applicable war crimes as mechs materialise out of thin air around the station.

They've always been slow as fuck which makes them intolerable to play as. If I remember correctly this was insurance against the kneejerk backlash to introducing a feature that allows players to come back as humanoids on the station.
