Given the number of people who come out of Comp sci courses unable to write any code, and the majority of programmers I know being self taught, it really does seem that just getting stuck in is the best method of learning the subject.

I hope your test driven development is more fun than my university's, Azari. It was approached awkwardly since the coursework's specification was too bare bones for the system of making tests then programming to work but I appreciate knowing about it. I imagine it might be better for modifying existing systems than creating something from scratch unless you have a thorough design doc and I'm awaiting the day I don't need to change a unit test after I figure out a better way of coding it that invalids the original test.

(Also I'm jealous that you seem to be learning more than me, grr nine grand a year grr)

Computing science is just that, the science of computing. All sciences are applied math in a way, but none of them are closer to actual math than computing science. On a very theoretical level, you can mathematically prove properties of algorithms and protocols with the right tools and calculi (such as undecidability, which means that a computer cannot solve a computation deterministically).

As you said, all sciences are intrinsically connected to maths, but to state that CompSci is more than others is kinda iffy considering at the base level everything is maths.

You can cut down even biology to pure applied mathematics if you look at it abstractedly, and you can do it even easier with both Chemistry and Physics.

The difference is that for sciences like physics and chemistry, math is an end to a means. Computing science deals with how to compute something. It looks at the math itself and asks how it can be deconstructed into simple steps that can be rapidly solved by a machine.

Yeah but when you get into super in depth genetics you have to do alot of maths surrounding probabilities and statistical reliability.

Same thing in biochemistry, everyone thinks it's just chemistry with a basis of biology but then the first topics you do as an undergrad is entropy of biological reactions. And I'm not talking about ΔG = ΔH - TΔS either.

A mate of mine went to a bodymod place and got a tiny magnet implanted in his little finger, it took only a few weeks before his brain started interpreting the tiny movements it makes when he puts it near metal things and magnetic things and now it's a legit sixth sense. Apparently he could reach out and feel a sort of dome of force around the microwave when it was running, as well as being able to tell whether a drink can is steel or aluminium just by waving his hand past it and shit like that.

Actually it's considered a pretty chic thing to do in meteorologist circles to get a bunch of magnets implanted in your hands. You develop a bunch of weird senses based on their movement that allow you to tell the weather or some shit.

Saw warcraft movie last night. Was pretty cringy, and the non historical silly armor bothered me more than I thought it would. I guess it is not bad for a story made for an rts in the early 90s

Not even the pauldrons, just like the goofy chestplates and the kings stupid helmet, it was not even close to what real armor looks like and it all looked plastic.

Also it did not seem very accessible to people who never played the games. I guess they had such a massive guaranteed demographic they didn't bother making it accessible.

Gul Dan was pretty cool though

At first the orcs looked really out of place and goofy to me, but after a bit i kinda got used to it. The magic stuff all looked pretty cool, special effects wise. It was not bad


EDIT: Gonna expand a little on this. I think my biggest issue with the movie boils down to the fact that a lot of the stuff in warcraft looks really cool in a video game but is incredibly jarring and odd in real life. The armor certainly falls under this, as do the orc faces and pretty much all the architecture. The dwarves all look very bloated and CGI in contrast to the more humanesque dwarves in lord of the rings. The human cities look pretty much identical to how they did in Warcraft 3 and in real life it just looks kinda off. Can't really explain it.

Fight scenes were pretty cool though, lot of human soldiers with guns which was neat. At one point an orc gets his hand blown off point blank and it was pretty badass. Not a horrible movie overall, but a pretty good indicator that trying to capture the identical artistic style of a video game in real life does not work terribly well

Unless Warhams total war does really REALLY well i doubt there will ever be a warhammer fantasy movie because Games Workshop saw fit to nuke the Old World for Age of Shitmar. It is really upsetting to me because the setting for Warhammer fantasy is an interesting and slightly darker take on a lot of fantasy tropes, and is based more on germany than the classic britain/france hybrid that everyone else does. Seems like such a goddamn waste. My greatest hope is that between warhammer fantasy vidya games doing well and age of shiggydigmar doing so poorly they might do a massive asspull retcon and bring it back
