Actually after looking over the forums and seeing what people are saying in the different admin feedback threads, it seems like things are buttoned up pretty tightly. I happened across Malkevin's thread about cult changes just for example, and it looks like he's making balance changes based on his own experiences while also opening up conversation directly with the players to talk about the changes he made.

Holy shit.

The more I look around the more I wonder what the hell people could possibly have to complain about. Shit seems pretty transparent, people are being listened to, nobody is being tossed in the gulag just because "we don't like you".

This might be the best I've ever seen this shit enterprise serve up hot festering pieces of shit at low prices 24/7.

It looks like everything is in pretty good hands and that makes me genuinely happy about spessmens.

I'm not sure when the last time I was able to say that was.

i'm pretty sure unless you make fun of scaredy's mom or actually ask to be deadminned you never ever will be. you have a rank but you're not actually an admin and you shouldn't be a game master anymore even if you do want to admin again (somethig im not opposed to) because you originally got it because you took on extra responsibility which other people are in charge of now anyway.

In the incredibly rare scenario where something gets fucked up and absolutely nobody else is around to fix it and people remember I'm still in touch with quite a few members of the community...so maybe I'm there underneath a pane of glass with a fire-axe to be broke open in case of an emergency or something.

At the very least everyone knows I'm not the kind of asshole to just show up in the middle of the night and gib everyone / crash the server / whatever. I guess it causes no harm and in some really obtuse scenario might actually be useful...?

That attitude of the community will never change but the state of the underlying game changes all the time.

It seems like the game has genuinely improved even if the people playing it are as shitty as ever. No offense to anyone in particular.

I am a little confused on the state of the forums. Did you guys just put everyone's names into a hat and award ranks based on the order you pulled people out or what? Was there any process for vetting people beyond "I like this guy and don't like that guy?"

On further rumination if there's any reason why I'm still an admin it's because I come back to play for two hours and end up doing this instead.
And stick my nose into this. Because apparently nobody else feels like it.

I feel like I came over to the house to visit and ended up doing the dishes.

Someone kept asking me if I would trialadmin them while I was on because they're supposed to be practicing but I couldn't get an answer over who their advocate was or who was supposed to be showing them the ropes, and I'm definitely the last guy who ought to be mentoring anyone on that. Nothing personal, guy, but I don't want to make you my responsibility nor should you volunteer to be.

Of the four rounds I saw while I was on two of them were MALF AI events though so it's good at least that we accomplished that.

honeslty the reason why admins who come back after a long break leave after 2 weeks is because they spend 90% of the time admining and don't spend time actually playing the game.

I HAVE NO IDEA. I just hang out for the once or twice a week times I occasionally stop in on the servers and for feeding my schadenfreude via FNR threads.

At least the forums is still nice.
I miss the traffic, but that feeling blows over after a while.

You know for how much we have argued in the past I think you're one of the better candidates for whatever sort of authority structure there is or however that winds up.

Your judgement is solid and you have experience, but beyond that when people complain about you you make changes to accommodate that. If you didn't have the same name all this time I doubt most people would recognize you as the same admin you were when you first arrived.

I vaguely remember you being really uncertain of everything at first, but in a good way.

Trialmins typically go one of two ways:

The first group think they know everything about every situation and all the rules and the appropriate actions. They only ask questions about how all the buttons and doodads work and some of the finer points of admin procedure. Inevitably they will be reigned in a little and their adminship honed by being criticized for the mistakes they make. Most people that were very active players and FNR readers start this way. It sounds kind-of critical but plenty of folks from this group went on to be great admins. Actually probably most admins come from this group.

The second group is very uncertain about everything ruleswise, and desires a lot of hand-holding and ride-along style training during their trial period. They're very concerned about getting things right by the books and the players and community as a whole versus their own POV and the rules they experienced. The mistakes they make are usually from not reacting quickly enough or clearly enough as they fumble around trying to find the exact precedent that fits this situation in a game where people are constantly inventing new ways to be the worst player possible. I don't know what to say about the admins that come out of this group because they're less frequent and initially I was this kind of trialadmin.

If memory serves you were part of the second group, and you've matured.

Group A admins are like M-16's. Accurate, powerful, quick to action, but they also need a bit of maintenance now and again that they sometimes don't get.

Group B admins are like AK-47's. Powerful, durable, dependable, but a little less accurate and slower to fire.
