Grass first appeared 66 million years ago towards the end of the Cretaceous. So there is a very slight overlap.

Precursor trees seriously used to reproduce by jizzing huge quantities of plant jizz into the wind and hoping it hit other trees. This lead to a nice niche for pollinator insects that could do the job more efficiently in a nice symbiosis. Also beetles were the first pollinators
