I can definitely understand when people don't vote when the system doesn't actually give them a choice

You have a choice but the system doesn't have the power to produce a candidate you personally can get behind 100% every time because that's an impossible request. And it's not like this is a US only problem, the Brits have the same problem.

The failure of the US and UK system is that the elected candidate represents all issues, you may agree with their stance on foreign policy but you might not agree with them on health care.

A better fairer system would be to have no One Leader To Lead Them All and instead your candidate stands for one class of issue - i.e Secretary of Defence, but that still going to suffer from tyranny of the majority and without a ring leader any debate is going to turn into a pissing contest.

But still, better than trusting your 'trump' card to appoint the right person to a position?

Look at the current line up:
Secretary of Defence is a well respected and experienced General that earned their stars.
Secretary of Commerce is some greedy fat cat that played a major role in the 2005 banking crisis.

Maybe a better system would be a hybrid of the two?
An elected ringleader but the department leaders are also elected by the populace instead of appointed by the ringleader?

The issue with that is simple

People will vote maximum social programs, because they benefit them and it is nice to do so
And minimum taxes, because nobody likes taxes

Someone is going to need to make the decision of what programs are worth the tax money

They talk a big game but the more they resist the more pressure Trump will apply. They won't last long.

Also a state has zero authority to affirm the citizenry of people, that's 100% the federal government's job. Thus, sactuary cities inhibiting law enforcement from evicting illegal aliens trespassing on US soil is super illegal.

And even if, somehow, the sanctuary cities manage to hold out for long all Trump has to do is wave his hand and the state guard will be nationalized and be given orders to find and evict illegal immigrants from the sanctuary cities. Bam, done, states can't do shit.

After a while it's like the whole situation that gave rise to the saying "in for a penny, in for a pound" - if the punishment (ie. lib screeching and people getting offended on social media) is gonna be the same whether you commit a minor transgression or a big one, then fuckit, why stop at a minor one? If you don't actually care about the opinions of people who screech on social media then the "punishment" doesn't affect you.

Screaming "YOU CAN'T SAY THAT" doesn't make opinions you disagree with go away, it just makes people say them in places where they know you're not listening - and in forcing people to go to those places where they know you won't be listening and they can speak their mind freely, you force them to associate with other people who can't speak their minds freely in the tumblrsphere.

Like, fuckin' hell. Less than a decade ago UKIP and the BNP were the fringiest of fringe parties. The Big Three UK parties were all wedded to the EU, and anyone who dared to say anything different was some minority fringe little englander racist - then the BNP won a seat in the European Parliament. Instead of asking "hmm, what could drive the people of that constituency to vote for the we-hate-darkies party? What issue could have prompted this decision?", the usual suspects just dug their heels in and called the entire county racist. UKIP noticed and positioned themselves as the party of "hey, we're not fond of the EU either, and we don't have a policy of gassing the kikes so maybe consider voting for us to represent you on this issue that you clearly consider important enough to sway your votes", and the rest is history.

If you leave people with no other viable option than to side with fucking nazis, they will side with fucking nazis sooner or later.

I was more referring to the BNP than UKIP, who are pretty much just old-tory eurosceptics that the crazies latched onto when they started being a politically-halfway-viable way of ditching out of the EU. Even the BNP aren't fully nazi, so the point is more "if the only option left a really fucking terrible one then people will still take that option because it's the only option"

Although its thanks to the BNP falling apart that UKIP has been able to make such headway.

The establishment played the game too well and by smearing one of the main opposition parties it created what we have today - a non vote splitted opposition.
Because with the way the system works if you have two parties that have same voter base neither of those parties will win anything.

I honestly don't think Cameron believed a referendum would say leave, it was a sop to get UKIP voters to shut up - that, and UKIP were biting into tory seats, and if they couldn't swing a referendum they could certainly swing some of the seats in the GE, maybe enough to put Labour in (or the utter shambles that would be a Lab/SNP coalition). Hell, look at the current state of Scotland - 45% is a pretty conclusive loss in a yes/no referendum, but in FPTP it's an utter landslide victory.
