In my opinion it's a relative thing: eg if you're used to toilet paper it's not gross, but if you're used to bidets then it is.
simultaneously someone who used soap & water might find only using bidets with water to be gross

if you got a dirty arm and decided to rub it clean with toilet paper, you'd end up with a slightly dirty and painfully raw arm + a lot of tissue waste

bidet thread: get one. if you cannot afford one, that's okay. there's also things you can attach to your toilet. if you can't afford one like that either. okay. it happens.
bidets allow you to clean your ass and genitals without having to take a shower. convenient for both regular hygiene (i feel like garbage whenever i can't use a bidet because public bathrooms tend to not have one) and Sexy hygiene if you're about to get down to business.
rubbing toilet paper ultimately can remove most of The Bad Things but it still does not have the same feeling as properly cleaning it, just like you feel clean after taking a shower. washing your hands in the shower or the sink are essentially the same. washing your ass on the bidet or the shower are essentially the same (if you use soap)
using toilet paper is better than not using anything at all. wet wipes can help but i'm pretty sure they don't have soap so they won't be as clean as using soap (unless you use both? dunno if this is possible). it's just insane to say that using a bidet isn't more hygienic. you cannot compare toilet paper with water and soap for cleaning any part of your body.

I wash my body in the shower because sweat makes you smell bad to everybody within a few feet of you.

Why would I wash the inside of my butt every time I use the potty? It doesn't touch anything, and nobody will smell it. Besides, there's no such thing as a "clean butt". Even if you just got out of the shower and wiped without defecating, your hand will still be nasty enough to warrant washing.

This idealized standard of anal cleanliness is both unnecessary and impossible to meet.

I think I have to take a purely utilitarian stance on bidets. I'm not saying that they wouldn't improve the quality of the hygiene of my lower area. The hygiene it affords is simply not worth it. If I was ever in a position where I cared about the cleanliness of what lay beneath my shorts, I would take a shower.
