Was the telethon good because I'm thinking it probably wasn't

I got in really late, and didn't stay long. The headmin trio would pick one willing participant at the time, to activate their mic and let them say their questions and thoughts. That part caused me physical pain in my ears, so I left pretty shortly after that, which is maybe 5 minutes, definitely not long enough to make a good judgement on the overall event.

They made admin applications be locked behind a hidden forum thread, so I think that's probably why there are less people applying to be admin

It's not supposed to be hidden, is "Submit Admin Applications" not near the top of the board?

It's only hidden so much as other people's apps are not public to anyone other than admins.

It's not hidden, you can view it fine and open a thread in there. Only the applications are hidden, wouldn't want the 5 users on this forum to catch wind of these....hah!

If we're being very, very fair, the stuff people divulge in those admin applications do have a hint of personal information in them (although we don't specifically ask for that) to make their convictions/reasonings in regards to being an admin a bit more personal. I think making them all public would just invite peanuts and all that jazz and people just would not enjoy it.

Also, in my personal experience, it took two months from me opening my admin application to getting adminned. I don't think it would be very interesting to see an application have one month with nothing, a small question, then another month until acceptance.

To be fair san I was literally trying to get you over the span of like 2 terms, you were already a thread I was spam bumping before you made an application

Whatever you think you know about how the team used to handle applications? Probably outdated.

There is no silent judging. All admins can see all applications. Admin trainers can respond. I'm actually given incredible leeway right now to bend and even break our established tradition of silent judgement to talk to players and treat them like actual people.

I am in the process of overhauling how the admin team views and handles applications and have been putting my ideas to practice since the start of the new year.

Applications get initial responses usually within 24h of being posted. Usually get weekly updates. I aim to resolve all applications by 28 days.

I ask questions and I answer them. I relay feedback. I give regular progress updates and explain the process and what's happening with applications with more transparency than a lot of people would like.

I treat applicants like people and like adults. I strike up conversation and try to help them sell all their strengths. I tell them good news, I tell them bad news and I expect them to handle the bad news with maturity.

The entire process is being humanised.

From a more honest point of view, I understand how you're describing the situation and how you hope for it to play out, but atleast from my perspective, there's a couple problems.
One issue is that since other people's applications are hidden (which is fine and they should be), you don't have a very good frame of reference for how to really approach the topic, other than the posted guide. I'm sure that it's not intended to be some big scary thing for people to do, and probably in practice everyone will be quite welcoming, but I believe that this can be a pretty discouraging thing for people. I know it would discourage me.

In addition to that, the admin application section is kind of out of the way and grouped next to a lot of the other administrative things. There's a semi-format you're supposed to follow, and you need to post a long forum thread advocating for yourself, and then have to wait probably atleast a few hours for a response. I do think these things add up, and are somewhat intimidating. Like they're not an enormous deal, but this alongside the other things, do add to making it a bit more unapproachable.

Compare this to the previous system of where you just had to message one of the GMs, headmins, or admintrainers. People would naturally develop friendships with a few of the admins, so they could just casually start the process by initiating a conversation and bringing it up. Like, before the new system, I always knew I could pm quite a few people, and they would consider me for admin (my personal accolades notwithstanding). It was a more approachable and encouraging thing to get into.

Beyond that, if the admin applications are visible to all current admins, I know this is gonna make people be apprehensive as well. You don't want your posts being judged by the roster of admins on the server (even if it isn't a big deal in reality). If it was just headmins, there'd be less of a concern. Again not the biggest deal, but it adds to the rest of the list on why it's a bit more unapproachable than the old system.


I know that maybe I'm making it sound like too big of a deal with "discouraging" or "intimidating," and for sure it's not some huge obstacle. But still, even if it's only subconsciously, I think this is kind of putting people off a bit from wanting to apply.

I still believe your Friends With Trainers system is very much alive and kicking in many respects, depending on how transparent the trainer wants to be about the process. I got adminned because I DMed Coco asking if I could run events and do more with my Coder rank. Their response was to admin me and put me under all the appropriate checks and balances that the admin team gets for doing that sort of stuff. So I definitely got into the team via "the slide into headmin DMs" system.

For players who don't want to slide into DMs incase someone thinks they're trying a bit of social engineering, there is the far more transparent application subforum. It is highly beneficial for players who have not yet been recognised in order to bring attention to themselves and say "Hello, yes, I'd like to be an admin and I'm being open and transparent about it. Please consider me!"

Applications are very useful because they're so open. With transparency comes freedom to talk to players, freedom for them to reply and know they're not being misrepresented. There are definite benefits for players AND for the admin team. It's why I shill for the application subforum so hard.

Well that's good to hear it still exists. I had assumed the application forum had subsumed the old methods for a new, more structured approach. That was where my main concern was. I do think that having both options is a good thing in this case! Both methods do have positives and negatives. I'm not the type to say we always need multiple options for everything, but I think it's very appropriate in this case.

Recruiting is a mix of old school "I like this guy, let's surprise him" approaches, you can definitely slide your way into a trainer's DMs to get their attention (which overlaps with the former category, as it has the same recruitment process) and you can formally apply.

I don't think trainers themselves will be interested in forcing people to apply any time soon. Having all options open broadens the pool of potential candidates to the greatest possible surface area.
