The H&K 9mm USP is the standard service pistol of the Irish Defense force (and many others), and one of my favourite guns.
I'll second the Mossberg 500 series (590's are nice). Personally, though, I'd go with a rifle or pistol for home defense. If you're worried about aiming, stick a red dot on it. Assuming you're considering buckshot for the HD load, know that the spread can pepper all sorts of things that you're not intending to hit.

Plus, there's a psychological aspect to a shotgun. Nothing puts the hairs on your neck on end like the sound of a shotgun slide being racked. If that's enough to scare him off, then we're good.
Thirding the Mossberg 500. I always kept it loaded and locked so racking the slide wouldn't have been a psychological factor. Not a gun owner, but I'm pretty sure the intention isn't to kill people (and also killing people while your life isn't on the line is illegal in most states, Florida being an exception) but rather to scare them off, or hold them in place while you call the police.

EVEN STILL, if you live in a high-crime area, it can protect you from a minority of situations where it WOULD actually help. I.e., you're with a friend and they're being mugged/raped/whatever. Maybe there's a street fight or barfight you find yourself in -- any numbers of scenarios. The best defense to *chu-chick* "Give me your wallet" is yes sir/yes ma'am though
