free radical (creators of timesplitters) has shut down

some dipshit vulture capitalist company bought out free radical and then instantly closed them a month later

this is an official mourning thread. im actually devastated. timesplitters was one of my favorites and i was looking forward to the fourth one. me and my cousin would spend hours playing timesplitters 2 and future perfect together.

the games industry is an absolute mess right now. so many studios shutting down and so many god damn layoffs. at this point im hoping stormgate does well (its not going to, it looks like ass) just to get some juice into the industry.

whatever. im gonna go cry

I'm actually pretty sad about Daedelic shuttering their dev studio this year, even if they did make Gollum. There's only so many point and click studios to go around after all.

Ironically I think 2023 has been a god year for gaming. A lot, a LOT of companies are going to shit (example: Creative Assembly loooooooool) but it feels like a lot of other companies that simply work on delivering good games as their main focus (with profit coming as a result) are completely crushing it, and showing other companies in the industry that it's possible to make things you're proud of instead of, I dunno, ANTHEM.

I enjoyed the Deponia series of point and clicks. They were a time capsule of the 2000s but in a good way.

2007 was the best year for mainstream releases. go look up a list of shit that dropped that year. should've packed it up after that tbqh.

gta 6 is out soon to save the industry like batman in arkham games

(the industry is pretty fine though? most genres had at worst decent 2023 releases)

Happening in a lot of industries that exploded with covid, I could be mad at gaming industry specifically but overall I'm mad at bigger factors in play. Also, it's a lot of really shit companies. Like blizzard.

Yeah the issue is that big games companies respond to these kinds of failures by buying the small successful studios out then running them into the ground, sacking all the staff, keeping the name as a trophy and moving on to the next up-and-comer
