Freon in the vents

I propose a new server rule that says to NEVER put freon in the vents, even as an antagonist, on the grounds of it lagging the server to shit enough to require a restart.

Discuss.

ban people that use a feature, seems like we should be fixing the feature instead

The only way to fix it would be to remove it, since freon by its very nature requires a huge amount of atmos processing

Freon is a shitty server crashing grief gas

If a feature is so badly coded that it crashes the server every time it's used, it stands to reason that it should be removed.

Banning people for a code issue that isn't a direct exploit is pretty retarded.

Maybe we should ban goofball every time the server crashes / has to be rebooted.

But the division between server and codebase is absolute!

This is hilarious to me because goofball had a fucking literal fit when freon was removed while he was working on a "fix" but this was months ago and it still causes crashes

And we also banned people that used pull space walk, and Centcomm shuttle invasions.

There's already precedent for this so I don't know why suddenly the uproar for this.

We should still remove the feature until it's fixed or fix it. Having it work on a local server with barely any load for a few hours doesn't mean it'll work with 70 players

Lol here is a gas, it's only usage in game is now to get you banned.

So why the fuck does it still exist.....

whenever i cry about this i get told "correlation != causation"
go pin down which line of code fucks shit up so we have actual things to argue with.
imo it should be removed, though.

clearly the answer is to replace it with BZ and make BZ have particles shaped like clown masks instead of being invisible.

I was thinking about water vapor, why not have superchilled water vapor act the same as freon in the supermatter, water can hold a shitload of heat, right?

Water doesn't really hold a shitload of heat, it just holds more than most substances.
The entire concept of freon is "very cold gas has an impossibly absurd heat capacity lol".

Fuck anyone who floods Freon (or plasma, for that matter). You're ruining the round for everyone.

a well-made plasma flood is classic
a well-made freon flood is impossible

So sad I never rolled atmos traitor during the time this was a thing.

I would have just put a scrubber on the holodeck, fill the waste line with freon and then directly wrench it to distro.

Man that brings me back to the fusion times.

Attach a connector to the distro line, wrench down fan, set to In at max pressure, emag doors to holodeck, hit the freon.

none of you really have any concept of how the code works, so please refrain from making uninformed opinions.

That was the joke. I figured there would be a bigger, better payoff, but I got you instead. You are now my consolation prize.

I don't think this is a good idea, complain to the coders.

A hacky fix would be making it so freon entering a pipe destroys itself but freezes the pipe shut or something

As much as i hate to say it, we should probably just bin it since it is collectively making a detriment to the server.

The only other solution is to localise the gas entirely so it can't enter pipes at all under the excuse that the "particles are too dense for the pipes" by blacklisting it, in which case you would need to use gas filters with air canisters attached to effectively scrub out freon and return it to its (or another canister for containment) original canister without using pipe filtrations on the freon itself.

That requires atmos twiddling though.

I'm pretty sure it's atmos/LINDA , not freon.

Maybe it's worth reconsidering if you really need a costly complex gas simulation that 99% of players and 98% of coders don't even fully grasp or if you maybe should switch to something much simpler and faster. That would probably make balancing and maintaining new gasses like freon much, much easier aswell.

In fact, what use is a complex system if a gas like freon can't even properly utilize a feature said system offers without breaking the server?

Or I might be completely wrong, though this is based on a few hours of testing and profiling.
