It's not.

Did this really need to be a policy discussion thread? It sounds like the sort of thing you should adminhelp and move on - Unless this is your passive-aggressive way of saying an admin said it was okay and you don't think it should be.

If you see OOC in IC, just copy and paste it into your adminhelp and they will get a warning/ban.

Half the time it's admins doing it via centcomm announcements though.

The definition for OOC in IC is pretty broad. I'm pretty sure you can say memes IC ? It's not like the word itself is an OOC concept

Saying it once isn't a huge deal but spamming it like that is obnoxious. Someone else rejected your adminhelp but I view that as a legitimate complaint.

What's the correct amount of memes that you can say without overmemeing it with memes and get memebanned?

Well I mean at that point it's not really an OOC in IC issue, that's just spamming, and should be dealt with as such

We used to ban on sight for 'ayy lmao', why not this? I don't quite understand the logic, aside from the immersion breaking memery being as equally obnoxiously done by most of the administrators themselves right now. Which shouldn't be a reason.

One is actually a word, the other is an acronym and was given a kill on sight order by headmins.

Is it any less immersion breaking than the Last Hit Meme, though? I assume that's why we were banning for it previously.

"Ayy lmao" got stale and wasn't very funny in the first place. This isn't either, but it's much more tolerable. I think the most reasonable route isn't to outright ban shit like "meme" but to keep unfunny shitters from spamming it.

Funny or die

No bans though, just ask them to stop

This is my main complaint about the enforcement of OOC in IC. Obviously the intention is to prevent wholesale destruction of immersion, yet it seems to fail the admin test in the same way that harm-ignoring asimov silicon players do.

People said ayy lmao because it pissed SoS off so much he banned it (which made people want to say it even more).

What happens if you're exposed to a meme second hand and aren't aware of its origin, or that it is hated here. What happens if you use such a meme in IC?

Last I heard pop culture references are perfectly fine and the line between the two can be very blurry, especially if you are mostly exposed to them from second hand.

Funnily enough the last time OOC in IC was brought up it was for Ayy lmao.

The other day I was the captain and the AI was generally being a retarded memer, even saying ayy lmao
I copied and pasted this into an admin help, even labeling it as OOC in IC, Ausops said he was handling it yet the AI was still spouting memes.

Memes are retarded and are the lowest, most grating, immersion breaking 'humour' in existence. Those that spout memes are most often than not the ones that demonstrate a lack of maturity to pass the 18+ rule.

Spouting dank memes should be bannable or remove any protection you have.
We can create fluff around this if need be. People who do it are doing it to be annoying and should be handled accordingly.

Its low effort garbage that got old forty-seven seconds after the original term was created, rare spoutings of shitty memes are fine but being a idiot and spouting long sentences or constantly posting about this shit should just get a squad of space carp resprited as mimes dumped on you.

This is stupid, I didn't knew memes were under OOC in IC. I thought it was only stuff like saying "The Wiki/Admin/Headmin said this," or "It was removed because of a coder," etc.

yeah this is just spamming not OOC in IC

OOC in IC is shit like
Fuckyear says, "ADMINS make me a changeling you faggot fucks"
which is bannable, and
Friendly McNewPlayerHelper says, "((You have to click the little green button on the bottom right to change intents.))"
which shouldnt be bannable

As someone whose coding experience ends at passcode combinations, I propose the word "meme" inflict the speaker with brain damage, as well as other unsavory words we'd like to keep out of the game.
Censorpship with in-game ramifications and would free admins from inflicting punishment in minor offenses.

Any effect, even negative, might turn out to be an incentive, not a detractor. Unless an "initial brain damage" statistic is also added to character setup, using memes would become a tool to gain brain damage. I'm sure you can imagine situations where that might in fact be a desirable goal for someone's roleplay character. Examples include wanting to play a brain damaged character from round start (potentially an attempt to get around the "Don't roleplay an insane murderer" rule), or being detained by security and spouting a few memes to become brain dead and suddenly become mechanically unable to participate in questioning, or in a conversation or exchange where one of the people uses this brain damage effect as a part of the conversation itself - think of it as a written word equivalent to stomping their foot during a real life conversation, or to someone hitting themselves in order to force an empathy response from the person they are speaking to, likely to get them to reveal something they don't want to.

I'm not saying these sorts of situations would be common, they are just examples of exchanges which might in fact happen. I'm also not saying facilitating these sorts of conversations is inherently bad, irrespective of the means to getting brain damage being memes, WGW quotes or just pressing a dedicated button or using a verb.

One, we're not adding built in filters for perfectly acceptable words.
Somebody saying meme could very well be talking about memetics (obviously that's going to be a rare conversation) you shouldn't prevent people discussing memes IC, it's not something that should have to be solved with code, it's 10000000% a player problem not a code one, Let people talk about it like any other topic, but ban them (upping the ante each time) when they spam it to death.

What Remie said.

If someone's just spouting crap off continually then warn them, if they continue then drop the ban on them.

If someone acts as retarded as what Aranclanos describes then just make them actually retarded, then kick them.

It's deciding on a case-by-case basis what's acceptable and what's obnoxious.

Somebody posting in brackets to say something important is fine. Somebody, say, shouting "ROLLING FOR TRAITOR WIZARD BLOB OP!!" at the start of a round is stupid.

I'll be honest, I'm okay with the meme here and there, if it fits in the situation/conversation. Fuck, I improvised a whole bunch of events in a round around the theme of memes, and people liked it.

The really issue is that, if you keep abusing things, (over-using them OR spamming them nonsense-ly), that's where the problem starts. So, yeah, this is more of a "spam" issue than anything, really - and I believe we already have this covered.

Those above quotes I think were from when we had two consecutive blob rounds and the mood was very meme induced due to admin fuckery, not to mention we discoverd that the blob was the exact same player both times and both times he went to the same location and won.

Amusingly on the third round Ausops faked a Centcom secret report which sent a lot of the crew into a frenzy to hunt down a potential blob, which turned out to be just a monkey in the Captains office.

I don't remember doing it but we did have a few admins decide to meme upon players with fake announcements at least recently.

And what laharl said mostly. It's situational, sometimes players just happen to derive some spontaneous fun from the game involving memes and IC silliness and I think that's great. It's when people spam or do it in a context that doesn't fit on purpose and to annoy others, when admins get involved.

There must be an acceptable level of OOC. Explaining actions or jobs to people requires discussing mouse clicks and certain keys, explaining to retards how to uncheck whatever team antag mode they have no clue of how to play should also be acceptable.
