Cameras running on Environmental power

Post by Togopal » #272956

Make Cameras run on environmental power to make the AI more dependent on power and give tactical stealth ops more of a chance to get spotted without AI screaming over comms at the sight of a hardsuit before they even enter the station

Cameras are not very power hungry and consume 2W each

To combat an instant lose for traitor AIs, they can have a new purchasable upgrade called "Reroute Camera Power Network" for 20/30 points that makes cameras work even when power is out, the drawback is online cameras on a drained APC is a dead giveaway of their rogueness

This would lock AIs out of APC control should they need to shut that APC off, or otherwise assist. This would also greatly reduce the utility of camera lights. This function is one of the things most people want an AI to have, because it makes them more helpful.

No
So that encourages the crew to actually search for the power sink and find it. And there should seriously be an easier way to find a power sink because it's next to impossible to find when it's placed correctly

Lighting runs on a seperate power source than environment, and shuts off before environment does

And I'm sure the cameras can be modified to view APCs even with vision loss

He argued that camera lights would be useless, I pointed out that lighting will be killed before Environmental power, so the camera lights could still be utilized with broken lights/offline lighting before they are shut down

Disabling environmental power is a standard AI tactic to locking down an area after bolting the doors.

Maybe this might have been a good idea when doors and cams were basically indestructible to anything but bombs, hacking and singulos but I don't think it's a good idea now with how easy it is to break cams and doors nowadays. It's already hard enough to keep people from breaking out of an area/into of the sat without sacrificing your vision as well, regardless whether you're malf or not, and 20-30 cycles isn't an insignificant amount to spend for basic functionality.

Seriously, cams are not difficult to deal with. Just cut + multitool if the AI is malf and it has to spend two uses of Camera Reactivation to get its cams back (It's only allowed to buy reactivate cams once which has three uses) - and it can't get them back at all if you cut + weld.

Why would you turn off environment after bolting doors? Power loss won't make a bolted door any harder to break down with a fire axe, and you can just disable Airlock power manually on each airlock

Motion alarmed cameras make it impossible to pass areas to cut the cameras before they can see you

Maybe you should try avoiding the areas with motion sensors if you're trying to be stealthy.

Fair enough but there are other reasons the cameras should run on power

Turning off enviromentals after bolting an airlock prevents the bolts from being raised, making them unhackable. And you can only temporarily turn off power to an airlock, de-powering is permanent until power is restored.

Motion alarms only trigger if you run. Walk instead.

give me back cyborgs capable of actual combat and i will consider it

until then no AIs are already pretty garbage if there is a single person on-station that knows what they are doing and/or at least one traitor with a space suit that barely knows what they are doing, they don't really need additional nerfs

back in secborgland i would be for it, and was. but not anymore.

sometimes ideas just sound better in our heads than on paper, nothing wrong with that

at least you can recognize that people don't like your idea instead of going on for 50 pages saying the same thing over and over, I can respect that

Let me chime in here and also say that this is something I respect as well. It is quite refreshing!
