The Ludovico Technique from A Clockwork Orange

Post by NanookoftheNorth » #393981

The Ludovico Technique from the hit novel A Clockwork Orange (I often am reminded of this while playing on /tg/). The Ludovico Technique would be a chemical injection. While it remains in your system, one immediately gets sick (or vomits) at the thought of committing violence (harm intent). Seeing violent acts also would cause sickness or essentially stun the patient. Max 30 units can be injected without it causing toxin damage over time. The 30 units would last 15 minutes. With linear scale, after the initial injection, the patient would be sick for 5 seconds after seeing an act of violence. The patient if on harm intent would remain sick (vomiting or stunned) for up to 5 seconds after being removed from harm intent. When on the tail end, 10 units let's say would be 1.66 seconds (1/3 of the initial 5) of being sick. One would be unable to say violent words such as "kill" "murder" "stab" "slice" or "beat." Resisting would also induce sickness in a similar manner as going into harm intent. Running away would be the best option for anyone injected with the Ludovico Technique.

Going into critical condition would be the 'cure' to the Ludovico Technique as per the book, although it wasn't explicitly explained in the book.

The chemical would be called the Ludovico Technique, composed of:
1 part Sulfonal
2 parts Impedrezene

The idea is that it's not easy to make, however powerful if it is. What it is composed of is up for discussion, since making something so complex might be out of reach for most games.

A fun adder would be to have some of the Nadsat words replace the regular words:
Girl = "chickywick"
Good = "khorosow"
Chaplain = "charlie"
Little = "malenky"
Sex = "the old in out"
etc.

There would be plenty of applications. In the book, the intention was to be used on criminals to keep them out of prisons, but still have some free will. This would be a potentially suitable replacement or alternative to mindshield implants. Ideally, this would be a means of keeping players in the game despite being antags, or committing crimes. Also, there often isn't much room in the brig, with only 3 temporary cells, and 3 perma-brig cells.

I feel like in A Clockwork Orange, the setting starts off in what is essentially anarchy in the streets. To keep it short, there are a lot of similarities between SS13 and the world in the book with that in mind.

This has more or less the same purpose as Pax, although in a more complicated way.

Pax smoke grenades make great riot control, especially against revs if you have one on you set to go off on a signaller command.

I suppose making an adjustment of the name, so long as everyone enjoys it, and adding the additional nadsat slang.

Thank you for everyone's contributions.

Possibly it could be pax lv2. Because pax removes ability to violence. But ludovico does more. It makes you completely vulnerable to even vords about it.
Also it's effect is somewhat permanent until crit.
So, may be implemented.

Now to guess how a violent criminal with this chem in their system would get themselves into crit. Rack up 50 oxy damage from an empty internals tank and then burn both your hands with lightbulbs?

Pax already forbids those cases, all it would take is making those checks give sickness as well. Minor issue would be that there is no spam prevention so you could get sick really fast; additionally, getting sick from violence you see is complicated codewise.

Not really complicated. Just visible messages check, random(1/200 prob in tick) checks for gore in view. Possibly that's enought.

Adding a check on visible_message is serious snowflake code, though.

Wouldn't it be missing the extreme exposure to violence that's like 50% of the point anyway?
P.S. Shoot Dr. Allen on sight and dissolve his body in acid. Don't burn it.

Not necessarily.

The purpose of the Ludovico Technique was to psychologically force those who commit hyper-violent crimes into being decent citizens. Basically, those who cannot even think of doing bad, end up doing good.
The main character in the book knowingly does what society sees as immoral. Taking that leap, I'd say the lack of violence would still be worthwhile.

“I see what is right and approve, but I do what is wrong.”

“Is it better for a man to have chosen evil than to have good imposed upon him?”

“When a man cannot choose, he ceases to be a man.”

-Anthony Burgess, A Clockwork Orange

At this point I am having fun talking about the book. I don't want to make something complicated to code.

I'd rather not rename an existing reagent just because. What you could do, though, is add clockwork oranges to botany which would contain pax.
