Remove X-ray [poll]

This is going to be very controversial.

X-ray is too powerful of a mutation to have around with absolutely no drawbacks.

There's alot of cool stuff you can get like thermal eyes or camers, but those are all completely obsolete because x-ray exists.
Removing the x-ray mutation would give passage to way more eye options, since there won't be a complete all-in-one everything eye mutation.

I'm thinking of either removing it or reducing it's range, giving way for more gimmicky eye mutations

I figured I should get everyones opinions first

Make it hard to get (like goon-style "more two-pair-missing blocks on more powerful mutations) and the gimmicky eye things are easier

Or just add drawbacks for small amounts of instability

you could make it a toggle then add eye damage for when it's on (you have to strain your eyes to see through walls lol).

Hulk already got nerfed, wesoda.
I've been thinking about making x-ray require combining mutations, but I'm not sure which mutations would make sense. Maybe I'd make a new eye-based mutation and give it to moths or flypeople that would have to be combined, that'd be interesting.

Hulks unique in its own way. X-ray is thermals, meson and everything combined in a single mutation making so much high tier stuff completely obsolete since x-ray just exists with no drawbacks.

For instance, your entire screen goes extra bright, similar to how your screen goes darker with eye damage.

Not really a nerf, but interesting flavour.

x-ray on goon has a significant genetic instability cost, consider using something like that to balance it. if you want x-ray you got to work for a good version of it with chromosomes or take the stability hit and ONLY get x-ray.

This. If you're gonna nerf it for some reason, make the eye damage more costly.

You can now Weld less before you go blind without a welding helmet, with Xrays.

Flashes on your regular eye will fuck you up as bad as they do moths.

like you just see straight through it and get the full brunt of the flash / welder

It is rather aggravating when someone mixes xray with telekinesis and just does meme attacks from the other side of a wall. Though, I don't see that very often anymore so maybe it's harder to pull off now or something.

First job I ever really learned was geneticist. I love xray. But even so, the fact it totally obsoletes so many harder to get things is silly. It really needs a downside.

Swap the eye burning between it and thermals, so people will use thermals more and X-ray less, maybe even have thermals act as sunglasses or something

I think I'll give it a reverse binoculars effect so it zooms you in. still useful for seeing through walls, but not too useful.

Make x-rays have you unable to benefit from welding/flash protection in anyway, like how thermal vision reduces the effectiveness of flash protection
Make x-ray vision extra-sensitive to damage with even a single flash inducing temporary blindness for a solid 20 seconds.
Have R-walls obscure x-ray vision so that you can only see 2-3 tiles past them with a near-sightedness-like effect.

i think this would be the easiest one to do. iirc, ling thermal vision has something very similar that also effectively doubles your weakness to eye damage sources. could just port it over to xray.

Just make sure that the cybernetic x-ray eye organ doesnt have the same weakness. It requires late round RnD to be done and requires significant mineral cost along with needing surgery to install it.

If you want x-ray fast, go to genetics, if you want it good, get surgery done after the cybernetic is finished.

I actually was thinking about this the other week. It's brutally unfair to someone trying to play their round low-key and stealthy to unknowingly get watched so easily by someone with x-ray. There's no counter at all.

This is what I don't like about it, I've seen many times where a geneticist is bored and just wandering maint, and comes across someone setting up a gimmick or carefully constructed base of operations, and they just out them to the station or kill them through the wall with telekinesis

Goonnetics helped as its harder to get all the powers and there is some risk involved. Old genetics was quite broken; spend 10ish min to get all powers then just go be super hero cause nothing else to do.

How about this: Since X-rays are a type of radiation, make it slowly irradiate everything the guy with X-rays is seeing. Like too slow to endanger anybody except the guy with X-ray eyes and people who are next to him constantly, but strong enough to be picked up by geiger counters. So if you have a geiger counter, you can tell if somebody with X-rays is close. If we make the radiation range larger than 7 tiles, people with X-ray can be detected without them seeing who is detecting them. As for the radiation intensity, I'd suggest setting it in such a way that it reaches the threshold where it start's doing toxin damage in 10 minutes. Making it difficult to weaponize, but dangerous to the user.

An alternative to removing xray could be raising its instability by a significant amount (maybe to 60 so you can't even stack hulk with it). I guarantee fewer people would use it then.

- New thermals power, can be found in the gene console with 25 instability. Essentially replacing xray
- X-Ray is now created by combining thermals power with something else, cannot be found on its own in the gene console
- X-Ray instability raised to 40 from 25
X-Ray will be obtained and taken less often with these changes, while not being outright gutted
