Making the Science Department an important source of income

Post by MeteorCrush » #639719

According to Lore, the NT Space Station is supposed to be a Research station. I think that NT should reward the station crew with money based on Research performance. The money would be given to the RD (Research Director), and the RD would allocate money to scientists, and the scientists would spend the money towards whatever they need to complete their project.

Rather than just doing bounties, perhaps people (particularly assistants) could also assist scientists instead. The science department would have a long list of projects that they can choose to do. These projects would pay a lot of money, so much that people would prefer to help scientists do projects rather than bounties.

I also believe that the Science Department should be the most dangerous place on the station. Monsters might breach containment, toxic gases may leak, explosions that make big breaches, etc. Experimentation is all about taking risks to make progress (or to make big money).

I also believe that assistants should be treated as "guinea pigs". Scientists should make use of them to do life-threatening projects. If an assistant dies, then that simply gives more work to Medbay, and Medbay is always happy for more work. Assistants should be paid well for the amount of risk that they take for deciding to help the Science department.

After an assistant has made their fortune from surviving countless experiments, they could spend their money towards RP things, such as accessories, drugs, and throwing money generously at the bartender for booze at the bar. Or they could spend it on gear and medicine at cargo to help themselves with more projects.

--------------------------------

Examples of dangerous Research Projects:

1. Experimental Torture

This task requires the test subject to be in a certain state of health and body. For example, the task might be to get a lizard to a body temperature of lower than -200 Celsius, with as little burn damage as possible, while keeping them still alive. Then the scientist would need to scan the lizard at just the right time in order to complete this.

There would be a randomized list of Health States that NT is interested in seeing, and hundreds of combinations of ways to torture the test subject, with each completion granting the station more monetary funding.

Some more examples could be to scan someone who is addicted to several kinds of drugs, or to scan someone with a certain frankenstein combination of limbs and organs while they are fully healthy.

Perhaps the reward is 1000 to 10,000 credits per completion, depending on how hard and how well each was done.

2. Monster Pet Raising

You are given a creature that you need to take care of as a pet. The creature has a hidden set of preferences that the scientist needs to figure out. For example, the creature might be friendly to lizards, but hostile to humans. Or the creature might only enjoy food that is laced with meth, and will throw a tantrum if fed anything else. These preferences are randomized.

If the creature only likes lizards, and you happen to be a human, you could maybe fool the creature by wearing a lizard suit, or getting a lizard tail attached to yourself. Or you could ensure that the creature is fed well enough with foods that it likes. A prudent scientist would construct a containment room to hold the creature, and then observing it carefully, before letting it out.

The scientist needs to make sure the creature is fed, petted, and loved. The scientist also needs to be prepared in case the creature gets violent. In some cases, it might be better to send in an assistant to feed the creature initially, to see how the creature reacts.

This task pays the station periodically, as long as the creature is alive. Maybe 1000 credits every 10 minutes. Also, the happier the creature is, the more money the station gets. This bonus could bring the amount up to 10,000 credits every 10 minutes. The creature's happiness can be checked with a special scanner.

Once the creature is at max happiness, the scientist may sell the creature off to NT at cargo if they want, for an enormous sum of money, such as 100,000 credits. Or the scientist could keep the creature for themselves.

3. Creature Abduction

NT gives you the GPS location of a particular creature they want. The creature might be in space, or in lavaland. You'll need to find that particular creature, and then tap it with a special device that'll teleport it to a special room in the science department used to contain it.

You might earn 10,000 to 50,000 credits upon capture.

You'll need to make sure those creatures remain secured in their special rooms. Scientists could construct more of these kinds of rooms as needed.

Sometimes, these creatures may simply be a human syndicate mob.

This task makes the scientist feel more like a prison warden, making sure their prisoners don't escape. The department should continue to get paid periodically, the more creatures it has held, maybe 1000 to 5000 credits every 10 minutes.

--------------------------------

The scientist would spend the money at cargo if certain resources cannot be obtained elsewhere. For example, if Science needs more iron and glass to build more containment rooms, and all the miners are dead, then science could use the money to buy the resources at cargo. Or Science could use cargo to buy food, medicine, and space exploration gear.

I also want to note, that I believe the science department should have access to a full set of Chemistry equipment in their department, such as a Chem dispenser, Chem Master, Chem Heater, and a Chromatography machine. That way, all the meth and bomb chemists can go to Science, while chemists who actually want to help people would be in Medbay. I believe we should encourage people to do all their dangerous chemical experiments within the science department instead.
