New Janitor Tool

Post by Hernacious » #659202

Trying to do your job as a janitor can be tricky sometimes. Departments can get very dirty, especially the likes of medbay and brig, but you have no access. If the HoP isn't around to maybe squeeze an extra department onto your ID, you need someone to let you both in and out.

Perhaps stations would start looking a little cleaner if it were easier for the janitor to get where they need to be. This is where the Janus Key comes in. It's a 'smart key' that you can buy from a JaniDrobe and can be tucked away in a pocket or wallet. It can only be used by janitors (like the chaplain's bible) and can be used on airlocks to open them, provided certain conditions are met, here's two suggestions on how those conditions could work:

The Sensible Way
Each respective department head's office has a 'summon janitor' button. When it's pressed, the janitor gets an alert on their PDA that a department is requesting cleanup, and basic access to that department is added to the Janus Key. They'll still need someone to let them into the more secure areas, but it at least gets you through the front door. Pressing the button again removes the access from the Janus Key.

The Way of Madness
CentCom has decided the standards of hygiene on the station are unacceptable, and change is needed. A single M.O.P (Mess Observing Processor) alarm can now be found fitted to a wall somewhere around the entrance of each department. It automatically scans the whole department every few minutes or so and displays a 1 to 3 star hygiene rating based on things like blood and other liquid stains, as well as the number of trash items on the floor. If a department is dirty enough to get a 1 star rating, the janitor receives an alert on their PDA and the same system of access as mentioned above is added to their Janus Key, lasting until the hygiene rating rises above 1 star. If a department manages to maintain a 3 star rating for a certain length of time, everyone in that department gets a small mood boost when they next walk past the M.O.P showing their big shiny gold stars, and the janitor can use their Janus Key on it to dispense a novelty department-themed key chain which they can attach to their janicart.

I think this is a really fun idea. A streamlined way for people to summon a janitor is funny enough, but actually giving it a purpose? That's cool. I could foresee a ton of interesting interactions blossoming from a janitor summon button, especially with respect to antag stuff.

Minor points for discussion:
- Not sure if the key only being used by janitors by virtue of their job makes a lot of sense. If you murder the janitor and steal his keycard, and somebody summons the janitor to clean the medbay, why shouldn't you be allowed to use that keycard to infiltrate medbay?
- Is the temporary access subject to a timer? How long should that timer be? Does the timer start only after the janitor enters the area? If so, will the access expire anyway if the janitor takes too long to enter the area?
- What happens if a janitor is summoned to multiple locations at once? Is the second summoner told that the janitor is busy? Or can the janitor choose which job to do first?

Very fun idea but as a terry denthead i am contractually obligated to tell you it's your janitorial duty to hack your way into secure areas and leave them spotless
