A use for Space rats (virology)

As we all know, virology cannot have very much fun without a certain box from cargo, sometimes they won't order it, which sucks, I don't have a whole lot of experience with the job, but I know that at least.

My thought is simple, Give random chances for those random maintenance mice to carry some of those diseases that you get from the box, with a little effort the virologist could get it, traitors could gheto-breed from mice blood and such and spread it, it just seemed like a simple interesting idea, plague rats and such.

You can't get GBS without admins anyway.

Yeah, no gbs is a bad idea.

I just meant the crate diseases.

this is actually a really cool idea
rat processor for the virologist when?
>kill a rat dead
>insert rat into processor, activate
>dispenses a random bottle of blood with preset symptoms (such as symptoms from the viro crate)
doesn't even sound that hard to code, you wouldn't even need to do anything to rats besides make them fit in the processor

You don't need the crate as a viro really, but the idea of rats having diseases is pretty great.

Chance for mouse to bite you if you step on them, giving you the disease when?

eh, it's cool in theory but in practice this is pretty exploitable

How so?

Grab a health scanner, then go to a rat in maintenance. Run back and forth over it a dozen times until it bites you. Scan to check the disease, if it's the one you want extract your blood.

Then, spread your disease around, and quickly cure yourself. Wear protective clothing and you can get the whole crew sick, the virologist lynched, all sorts of things happening. Plenty of the crate diseases are annoying enough without actually needing any help from virology, especially if you release several at once.

Give the virologist a blender to shove them in instead. Oh and give the virologist a pet rat that's perpetually running on a wheel.

The idea of rats/mice being useful for science generally, though, be it virology or whatever, sounds fantastic. It'd be really neat if rats were used for little proof-of-concept things, like the monkeys are for testing diseases in virology.

gives everyone with maint access the ability to spread an annoying disease to every single other person on the station every round, whether they wanted to or not (which also makes it pretty much impossible to tell if it's grief or not)
allows virologist to bypass rat processor by simply using one rat to get every symptom (although it'd be funny to see viros throw rats into the monkey pen to farm symptoms)

the processor basically is a blender, have you seen the monkey/slime processor in xenobio?
and the rat pet for viro sounds pretty cool

Yeah, there should be a step there, I was thinking blood from a syringe, but a blender works too, better even

Actually make it a standard blender so the chef can do it too, then there is potential for antags to use it.

I did't mean have mice starts with space aids or something - just cold/cough etc. Of course if the viro was able to INFECT the mice with their own diseases, that would be cool.

At the very least, virology should be able to inject rats with viruses manually.

This is a freaking awesome idea, I always wondered why no one would ever get sick, which kinda makes viro pointless except for superpowers. Which if you gave those out would probably not be the best idea. I like playing viro for the super powers but after you got that, there is really nothing to do at all. I think the mice should be able to carry diseases you find in viro as well such as cold, flu, headache, cough you get the idea.

This can be easily fixed in code.

how would the code be able to tell a powergamer from someone just walking by and getting bitten on accident spoiler: it cant
also having rats inject people automatically with diseases at all (unless they were intentionally infected by a virologist) would be an annoying mechanic to begin with
why don't we just have the simple rat processor thing for virology

Simple, the easiest way would be to create a timer variable that only allows 1 bite per said ticks. The better solution (but more costly as well) would be to create a list of players that have recently touched/got bitten by the rat and create a timer variable that only allows them to be bitten 1 time per said amount of time (ticks). The timer variable would be attached to that specific person so if someone gets bitten, then immediately after a new person walks by, they can be bitten immediately as well.
Sorry about the late reply, I missed this topic.

Virology doesn't need any more reason to be mistrusted and there are already tons of nasty stuff they can make without any silly crate viruses. Spreading at least three different viruses with necrosis, hyphema and spontaneous combustion that are cured by lepo/gold is already easy to make. Theoretically speaking it's possible to spread 18 viruses if you're using infected monkeys and even one virus generally puts the entire crew to their knees. Combine rampart face eating viruses with virologist having 3 regenerative stimulant DNA aide viruses so he'll be immune to all the shit around the station and capable of spacewalking nude.
