Departmental Aassitants/student roles

Currently the biggest barrier to entry to departments for new players or players who stick to a small group of roles is a lack of knowledge of the procedures, tools, and mechanics of specialist jobs. Most people seem to pick up on fighting after one or two revs, but skills like properly searching, briging, and sentencing a prisoner take a long time to learn. now the wiki is a big help but nothing beats hands on experience. problem is most jobs have 3 -5 different things they need to keep track of. I propose that new basic roles be added to engineering, science, medical, and Maybe sec. Roles with lower access and less comprehensive duties like Orderlies/student-doctor s for medical(no back room or surgery access, mostly about moving people to cryo and to/from the morgue while learning the ropes), maintenance technician(none of engineering space work tasked with fixing pipe and power-net), Grad student (R&D and experimenter, getting minerals if mining somehow doesn't vanish off the face of the earth), and correctional officers(help process prisoners, start with no gear room access and just a baton, flash, and box of zip-ties. yes that means nothing but the up armored jumpsuit.)
THESE ARE INTENDED TO SUPPLEMENT ASSISTANT IN LEARNING GAME MECHANICS. They are designed to allow a person who is ready to learn limited and intrinsically acceptable basic access so they can learn form their peers.

I like it. It's the natural step between 'assistant' and 'useful, productive job'. I think access for job assistants might already be in the code, so it shouldn't be too hard to code either.

As it stands, you're either an Assistant - which means no access, no responsibility and nothing to do - or a full MD/Officer/Scientist/Engineer (et cetera), and it'd be helpful to have a stage in between there, for new people in a department.

I wonder, though - does, say, a Scientist Assistant get maintenance access? A Scientist doesn't, but an Assistant does.

Is it that hard to go to the hop and say "Hey i'm new here and i'd like to try out some robotics."

Or you know, just go up and ask someone in the department if they can show you around?

You know... That whole RP thing we like to pretend to be.

I would ACTUALLY like this.

Bay is removing their Security Cadet, oddly enough, and that's the one that I don't think would work on /tg/

If this were to happen, I'd say make it so you can't be a departmental assistant if you roll antag.

So the people you're trying to get help from don't have an outright meta reason to distrust you.

As it stands currently, I'm INCREDIBLY wary of transfers in because odds are they're there to murder me.

Keep antag for normal assistants though.
Also
Keep normal assistants.

If someone gets a job they've never played before all they have to say is "I'm new here can you tell me what to do" and usually someone in the department will tell them the basics. Part of the fun for me was learning how to do everything myself.

this is actually partially a way of preventing the become engineering grab hard-suit + gloves and then dick off without working. while its rare now coming in late and finding literally all the gear you need was taken and lost by a guy who died three times is no fun at all. plus space and suits can be hard and of the two space jobs- mining and engineering mining has a better helping hang with the gear from more experienced miners while engineering expects you to go wire shit solo or turn on a ridiculously deadly thing. cannot tell you how many times i have forgotten a critical piece of engineering gear(because people keep changing what they spawn with) and ether died because AIR or from touching a wire with a million amps in it.

I dunno, I've not seen this level of comradre in practice, mostly it's ignore them till they fuck up then yell at them for it.
I went through a pretty hard time relearning engineering over this. Cindy cate bullied me, then tried to arrest me.

In my experience, this is used about half of the time as a changeling/traitor trick to kill someone.

IIRC Goon had this and removed it because people just played it to be assistant+access

Goon used to have something like this but ended up removing them because they just looted everything not bolted down in the department and brought a wrench for everything that was. I'm inclined to follow Goon's example but I'd say try it for a week or two and if it becomes RAINBOWtide then we revert it and beat up the assistants for a while as punishment.

The only access they have should be standard department with a supervisor needed to let them into anything else.

I'd think this would work IF.
If you play this job (Have it as a YES/NO option instead of a level of preference)
You can't dick around the whole shift, you have to actually attempt to learn instead of being a absolute garb, and fucking everything up just because "lol i new plox hlp muh11!"

Take the whole learning driver thing
If i drive my car into a fortified military base, steal all of the equipment, then destroy it, and when the entire U.S armed forces show up at my door, i can't say
"lol i'm new, sowwy"

Make it so your ckey has to be younger then x ammount of days to play the role, because obviously mc dickens mcgee VI is going to play a engineering learner, and ending up releasing the sing

TL;DR Make it so experienced people can't play the role to be dicks, and that new people aren't allowed to be absolute fucking griffons because "lol im new"

I trust the administration to liberally dispense jobbans from it.

Nea Yengi, a veteran engi of five years with expert singularity and construction knowledge, is planning on branching out a little. She wants to learn some medicine.
So Nea applies for a medical intern job, but is rejected because she's too experienced... but not at medicine. She instead becomes a proper doctor without any training, and accidentally kills her first three patients before being fired for malpractice.

Hmm.

I just want Robotics interns to abuse.

If we had economy we could be financially abusing them by witholding wages

Just limit the total amount of them on station, like 1 per department.

Could always make them an admin-only role or something, and if you're a new connection to the server a message pops up telling you how to adminhelp and that if you'd like you can ask an admin to put you in a training role for new players.

This would be a fantastic addition.

Mainly because when you enter a job/department 100% foreign to you, you dont know what the fuck everything is what the fuck you should be doing to help out. Case in point, I was reading the Xenobiology guide, thought I was prepped, and when I entered the round and stumbled around finding out what stuff was and where. When other scientists saw my general lack of expertise I was told "Get out of the way and dont touch anything if you dont know what you're doing"

I can't blame them for not wanting some rookie wasting material, but still. There's a variety of hostility towards fresh workers and its rare people want to take the time to showcase everything. At least with an "intern" status, they can be given bitch work and slowly learn the ins and outs until they're comfortable doing actual work.

I would say let this be a thing for people who have played less than x hours as this job role. And only can be reenabled for certain people if admins specify so.

Edit also would be a great way to have a setup for allowing experienced players to teach new ones if it can be setup for that.
