They already exist, in the form of hybrid tasers.

No really, those do everything a bolas would do and you get 5/20 shots instead of one.

Craft some bolas using wire and metal or something and they act as a short throwable stun that makes people walk if they hit but can be removed in like 5 seconds.

I like it, but the vocal minority of assblasted anti-stun players won't let it get added.

We can dream though.

Okay, that actually made me laugh. Maybe it's not such a bad idea, but I can't really see giving everyone a ranged stun as anything over than straightforward power creep.

At least now that we're on the premise of 'everyone has access to this, not just the sort of people who could already get tasers'.

I had the bola gun idea a while ago but only really shared it with OOC chat ig at the time. Armoury starts with one, good for stopping rushes unless attacker employs l33t skills and dodges, not good against multiples unless more bola's are ordered (bola's and bola guns come seperate, every bola gun comes equipped with 1 'round' minimum). Default rope bola's can be thrown at less velocity and range from the hand after a certain amount of time winding it up by swinging it above your head like a lasso so to speak.

It is nice to meet a fellow bola enthusiast

You mean something like this a the last thing a armoury rusher will see before they are caught and then promptly perma-brigged or disposed of?

two minature taser shot sprites with a red wavy line (the 'laser rope') between for a single tile sprite that roates clockwise for every square moved to simulate spinning, regullar bolas are black with medium small black balls replacing where the taser shot should be with black chord between them in much the same fashion.

I looked into coding this. As far as I can tell there isn't a proc for when an object is thrown at something, which would make it tricky.

Make it so you have to aim for the legs in order to tangle or it just simply smacks them in the chest or head for a little brute and no stun

Tangling makes it so they are stuck in walk like a bear trap, knocks them down for two seconds on hit

Now it's balanced. That wasn't hard now, was it?

It was always balanced because of the amount of fiddly work to actually land the thing if we are talking of it like a projectile.

Literally the biggest problem would be pathing the target (worst case scenario, you miss and instead entangle your backup officer while some perp runs towards armory/you with a esword) and catching goddamn hallway noise (clowns, assistants, worthless cargo techs and engineers) the friendly fire would be atrocious, making it go to a particular part of the body is intuitive but hardly useful compared to a flat stun *from the force of it landing saying it weakened them if relevant* and temporary restraint akin to a cheap zip-wire that has to be charged up to throw by hand and a minor loading procedure into a crossbow/gun.

Oh, before we merge this thing of beauty, can we change the crafting just a bit? I think that metal should be crafted into iron balls, which are then used to make the bolas. It just kinda feels weird that we jump from sheets of metal to balls on string, although I'm probably just nitpicking.
Also, having craftable iron balls would let us also make some other stuff, like ball-and-chain leg restraints or medieval flails. And the balls themselves would be usable as crude weapons, maybe throwable to do damage similar to floor tiles.

You'd need sprites for the metal balls, so them going from straight metal is the simpler path.

initially that was what i was planning to do, but it felt like a bit too much effort both code-wise and actually crafting-wise
if i ever get around to it, i'll actually implement that, but for now i'm gonna file it under "out of the scope of my PR"

(They are good shit cragg, little hard to make but good, just dont expect them to be like cuffs)

Just make the target slip when bola'd. It only has to be one short slip, bit it makes sense and is a sufficient notifier of a successful bola attempt.
