Not being able of wearing a spacesuithelmet alone

Postby Aranclanos » Mon Jun 02, 2014 8:39 pm #10788

What do you think on this?

It's pretty simple, you wouldn't be able to wear the spacesuit helmet without wearing the actual suit.
Don't get too crazy please, it's just an idea.

I feel like the only people who walks around with only the helmet are the powergamers, the helmets alone lack of a #swag factor, but maybe I'm wrong, tell me!

I don't really see why this would be needed. Doesn't seem like a big issue.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I never saw this being a problem
But it's not really a terrible idea either.

It can be a issue some of the time. e.g. Engineer takes helmet at start of round dosent take rest of suit.
Space suit is now a crappy ghetto suit since no helmet.

It should be more a IC issue though since it would frustrate people having to manage with invintory more than the odd powergamer. (Should be talked as a part of powergamer flagging policy)

It is annoying that people abuse helmets like that but I don't think this is a solution we should use.

Making the helmet unable to be worn by itself is treating the symptom and not the disease. The reason people do this shit is because hardsuit helmets are:
flash protection
temperature protection
armor
easily-toggable lighting
identity-disguising
welding protection without the blinding effect of real welding masks
biological protection (reagent sprays/disease)

In short, they're LITERALLY EVERYTHING YOU COULD EVER WANT IN HEADGEAR

They should, at the very least, work like welding masks in that they only hide your face and provide protection if the visor is down.

Just have the space suit give you weldervision for a few seconds if you weld something/get flashed/have a flashbang go off near you. IIRC real space suits have automatic filters that activate whenever the sensors detect a bright light/the sun.

If you want to deal with people taking the suit helmets, that's a player issue - Something you should be fixing with administration and policy. The underlying code issue is that holy shit space helmets and rigs are amazing, so if you want to tackle that, look at this post.

Code is not for fixing player behaviour, stop that right now.

I've literally never had an issue with this. People wearing rig helmets and stuff is completely fine by me.

Maybe like Cheri said, they should have an integrated welding visor that you have to 'flip down' that darkens the lense and obscures your vision a bit/makes it flash-proof but when it's off you're susceptible to flashes. Hardsuit helmets should really not have flash protection and I don't know why they do outside of syndie rig helmets which can be modified uniquely anyway.

As for space suit helmets, well they shouldn't have flash or welding protection, do they?

Also, the only hardsuits that need to be armored are syndie, captain, and sec hardsuits. Period.

If anything, I would like to see the Security Hardsuits beefed up in the armour department, since they are shittier than a basic Armour Vest.

I like the idea of having the wielding mask feature built into a Rig Suit's Helmet that has to be activated manually, as well as removing most Rig Helmet's flash/flashbang/whatever protection.

You can tell something's off when assistants run around with RIG helmets while gunning people down. I don't think removing the ability to wear helmets without the suit is a good solution.

I do not have a problem with this, and I do not feel we need to change anything. You would see people wearing the whole suit instead if suits did not slow down the wearer.

Bug the virologist to share his Stimulant virus and/or bug chemistry to churn out Hyperzine for saniac speeds.

In addition, another reason why people love RIG helmets is because they are one of the few head gear items that block facehuggers and don't hinder your vision.

Exactly. People do not wear the space suits or hardsuits 24/7 because there is a downside to doing so. There is not a single downside to wearing the hardsuit helmet, however, and it provides every advantage you could want from a headpiece. This leads to people wearing just the helmet while they walk around the station.

paprika wrote:Also, the only hardsuits that need to be armored are syndie, captain, and sec hardsuits. Period.

*And mining. I agree. The other departments should get softsuits instead.

The fact remains that the other departments won't get softsuits because DEAD SPACE RIGSUITS ARE BASED AS FUCK

This is something I made the framework for last year, but I couldn't continue due to the lack of volunteers for the sprite work

Just do programmer art man.

Don't let art hold you back. The art will come when the code is set in stone.

Not a bad idea, certainly. I don't know about making it limit vision, seems like a huge hit for actual engineers working in space. I think attaching it to the suit would work swell, since you would get slower movement in addition to all the benefits, and movement speed is a big deal in combat situations.

Howabout it limits vision when welding?

IMO the biggest plus of the helmets is flash-protection.
Remove helmet flash protection and welding protecting, add a helmet welding visor on/off -button to the top to make it work like welding mask with limiting vision when welding visor on.

I dunno, perhaps removing the flash protection for a toggle one that also reduces vision?

That would just make singularity escape every rev round.

On a serious note though, that will just make life of those who wear just helmet harder, but that wouldn't remove the problem of people wearing just helmet.

If it is also attached to the suit?

And how will it make the singo escape every rev round? Do you mean protection from the singo's pull? Because thats dealt with by mesons...
