Transfer Botany to research

Botanists nowadays don't grow food for the chef anymore, and focus on making high-tech plants like glowshrooms, ambrosia, bluespace tomatoes or stuff like that.
They're starting to have more in common with the research sector than the service sector, and given their connection to RnD ( they're the only department aside from medbay that can be upgraded, and plants can give high tech levels) they might benefit from both RD supervision and closer ties to other science departments.

To keep the chef supplied, something like the garden could be in place of current botany, where the chef or a new garderer role could grow food seeds without being sidetracked.

just walk out of science and go five feet to the left you don't need to be able to yell at them from RnD like an armchair general

Or you remove unstable mutagen reaction on plants and make it a random chance on harvests

Pros
plants getting harvested
Mutation chance without getting unstable
No easy dna manipulator memes

Cons
SALT
RNG

Ezel that literally already exists.
It's called left 4 zed.

Also after using that to get the right plants, botany can manufacture their own mutagen.

@XDTM: Every department can be upgraded by R&D to some extent (botany doesn't even benefit that much, if at all, thanks to gaia), so what are you talking about?

No fuck off botany is suffering with once a harvest mutations, left 4 zed is shit as well even if it gives 2.

Before Gaia the RnD upgrades were basically the same thing as it. The biogenerator upgrades are stupidly good too.

Alternatively you could split it between Botany and Xenobotany. I think bay does it like this.

Doesn't R&D have enough going for it to add Botany to it's ever-growing grasp?

I actually rather like this idea. Maybe keep the name for the guys next to the chef as hydroponics and gardeners, but call the new science one botany and botanists.

We should also definitely have tie-ins with the other departments with this, though. It'd be nice to see earthsblood and other botany-plant-specific chems be usable in xenobio or chemistry or wherever.
