New tacticool gear for security! (R6 siege gadgets)

Post by DrPillzRedux » #233382

So currently I've got Kor working on porting items from Rainbow 6: Siege. My current goal is to get them implemented for SECURITY, not antags, and the players I've asked in-game agree. They're meant to give sec some new toys that aren't totally gimmicky but somewhat useful, without being OP. I'll list the items below. I've also put a video at the bottom of all these devices in use.

Breaching charge: Placed on a normal wall (not r-walls) and linked to a remote detonator. On detonation it blows up the wall akin to C4, but causes a small ball of smoke. Standing close to the explosion deafens you for a few seconds. Standing right against it on either side will crit you. This allows sec to enter a locked down room, but they give away their entry very easily.

Sec would start with a few of these in the armory. More could be ordered from cargo.

YOU CAN ONLY PLACE AND DETONATE 1 AT A TIME!

Flash Shield (FINISHED): A shield with a built in flash but with extended flash range. On use in hand, it will use a flash charge, doing the flash blind as normal. This gives sec a few seconds to stop a blinded opponent. And of course while they are blind, they can still move around and shoot. The flash WILL burn out after a few uses.

Possibly could be crafted from just a shield and a flash, or be part of RND.

Remote controlled drones (WIP): Small remote controlled drones that are linked to a handheld device. When using the device, you can move the drone around and it acts like a mobile camera. It can move through vents. Not very durable and can easily be smashed. Also have a rather loud sound that gives them away. This device lets sec get a peep into hostile areas to get an idea of what they're going up against. Also helps in camera-less areas. Each device can only be linked to 1 drone at a time.

Security could start with a few of these, I'd say 2 or 3. To prevent having these placed all over as ghetto cameras, they'd be ordered at a high price from cargo. Not made through RND.

X-Kairos Launcher
: A grenade launcher that shoots pellets filled with thermite onto a wall. Once you've shot your pellets onto a wall, using the launcher in your hand makes them start ticking. After a few seconds and with an audible giveaway as to the r-wall breaching device being used, the wall will explode. Preferably used on r-walls, but can breach normal walls. Shooting these onto anything but a wall just makes them break (be it a floor, person, mob, whatever).

To access this device, you'd have to order it at high cost from cargo or get it from science.

Cluster Charges: A remotely activated device that can be planted on any normal wall. On activation, it shoots 4 small explosive charges into the room on the other side of the wall.

This would obviously be a syndie or taitor item.

If you have to make them through science you're not adding it to sec, you're just buffing science.

Make them high cost HoS/Command crates

I'd say keep them as secure sec items and maybe some traitor variants. Sec for instance could have secure locker with flashbang clustercharges so they can flash a room with the element of surprise/without exposing themselves to the danger, whereas nuke ops or maybe traitors would get ones with frag grenades.

Can't wait to extract the shit out of the people I'm supposed to be keeping alive with that cluster charge

I feel like both thematically and gameplay wise the cluster charge and thermite launcher should be ops only

Kor already has PR'd the flash shield.

The other two sound op or something we can do already

> Kairos thermite launcher sounds op, not really justified and just leave it to guncrafting or something & using chem grenade ammo in selfmade grenade launchers

> We have X4 & C4 already that can be triggered to get in

However RC stuff has been in suggestion demand forever so this is the only valid idea i like (that isn't being made actively already)

The kairos is meant for a quick breach of 2-3 r-walls. There are alternatives, but this would be the fastest. However, the thing would be non-reloadable. You'd have to buy a whole new one from cargo.

Sec doesn't get C4. Giving them breaching charges isn't really bad in any way. There are time where sec needs to bust a wall for a raid.

I made a old breaching charge idea thread that was going to be a better C4, but X4 took its place eventually. Here's the sprite.

Also, to replace the launcher thing if its to op, you can add breaching stick clusters

Image

Like that, but it would be a version that can fold down into a cluster, it would look like you took two nunchucks and placed them side by side, then took another pair and made a + shape with them by sliding them into eachother.

That would be the collapsed version, a few would spawn in the armory, you can put them in your pocket, when you want to breach a wall, take it out, (requires two hands) activate it with Z, then use it on the wall, has a three second delay by default. it can be adjusted by examining it (no forced pop up for a timer). you screwdriver the collapsed assembly and then attach a radio signaler or whatever you want on it if you want to make it like a ttv.

it would blow the wall down and create the thermite sprite wall things. for future reference we should start making the thermite wall sprites be on top of people to make it look more like they're going through them than over them.

When you say you can only place & use one breaching charge at a time, what exactly makes that the case?

Do any of these items work for breaching airlocks?

Can the camera drone move with same speed/responsiveness as regular drone? Can it go through airlocks like them? (I would hope the answer isn't yes on both counts, otherwise it'll be way too hard to take them out even once they're spotted.
-Actually, could be cool to give drone a limited cone of vision or something (90 degrees? 180?). So you have to change the way it's facing to see what's in that direction.

Kairos Thermite Launcher is effectively splashing, what, 20u of thermite on each wall and having a remote ignition function? Can you make more pellets? (Maybe by loading beakers of thermite?)

What still needs sprites?

Each breaching charge detonator can only be linked to 1 charge at a time. Once you blow that charge, you can link it to another. This prevents a sec officer from just planting multiple charges and making a huge breach all at once.

Not sure, might be considered OP so that's up for discussion.

I dunno how Kor made it but it should not be as fast or responsive as a normal drone. The vision cone is a good idea but Kor would have to redo his current version to have it.

Essentially yes, but you can shoot them and breach from a distance. Sec can't always get a chemist to make thermite or make some themselves, so having this around would give them another option to breach a reinforced room.

Drones need a sprite, as does the device to control them (I'd say just use the tablet sprite). Everything else but the shield needs sprites.

They aren't for bullying, but they don't deserve POWERFUL things in the code just as much as antags do, and having more tools available is a direct increase to power. There's a difference between a role you pick and one you roll for.

misrepresenting security to make snarky comments on how they shouldn't have x y or z is bullying sorry

Many jobs have had a direct increase in power, antags being no exception. OP's thread is fun tools that aren't overpowering with a cosmetic theme of tacticool and shouldn't have been bullied in the first place.

I'm just saying, give mall cops breaching charges and there'll totally be cases where they look for the slightest excuse to use them and that sounds amazing. Someone ask for sec to come to medbay? STEP 1: BREACHING CHARGE ON WALL BY ENTRY. STEP 2: USE LOUDSPEAKER TO TELL THE OCCUPANTS THEY HAVE UNTIL THE COUNT OF FIVE TO LAY DOWN THEIR WEAPONS AND OPEN THE DOOR. STEP 3: COUNT TO FIVE AS FAST AS POSSIBLE.

Once you've breached and swept the area, maintain tactical superiority by using a second breaching charge to make your exit. Then breach into engineering so that you can tell them to fix the holes in medbay's walls. Ignore their whining about how you could have used a radio- what, and tell the whole station about the structural vulnerabilities in medbay's exterior? Civilians, am I right?

I think remote control scouts for security will be bad because the harder it is for traitors to be stealthy, the more they rely on being able to straight up kill security in a fight, and the more we get into dumb powercreep battles as we try to juggle sec vs traitor and sec vs conversion antag of the month, and the more people are encouraged to just murder randomly in the hallways.

I don't see the issue with it. A sec officer can't do anything while droning. If they see something they have to relay it to others or get off their drone and move. They're also vulnerable while droning. The only issue I see is figuring out how to distribute it.

If you want to get real specific about it, you can already order borgs around as a mobile camera.

You should see the PR that made it easier to maneuver with sec cam console then.

Simplest brute force solution I can name: Have it so you can't examine things through a remote control drone's camera.

I mean, when I do stealth traitor, I do it by maintaining deniability and blending in, not by lurking in vacant offices plotting evil schemes. This wouldn't really make it harder.

In my head main function of remote control drone would be to scout for things it's very dangerous to find- cult base, shadowlings and alien hives.

Yeah but the reason sec isn't tacticool is not for lack of tacticool gear. Riot armor, telescopic shields, swat helmets, shotguns, flashbangs.... Idk, it's funny how we keep agreeing on what the right flavor is but totally disagreeing re: whether this gets sec closer/further from that flavor.

I certainly don't want sec to have gear on par with nuke ops, but stuff like breaching charges doesn't cross that line. Breaching charge takes out 1 wall and stuns people who are adjacent. It's not C4, let alone X4.

But when are we adding killcams and tactical nail polish?

Memes aside I like these ideas a lot, flash shield and scout drones specifically. The kairos sounds cool but it does sound more like a nuke op/syndicate weapon than a security weapon. And it would make killing the ai pretty trivial.

No. That defeats the point of it. They already have C4, a cheap easy way to break r-walls.

The flash shield is now available ingame. To craft one, you need a wall mounted flasher frame from cargo, a riot shield and a flash.

And yes, the flash in it works for rev heads as far as I know. So if a revhead can sneak into the armory and nab one, they can gey an AoE converter.

That's a good point re: kairos making it pretty trivial to kill the AI. If nothing else, it should probably be made without firing pins and/or still need reagent ammo.

Actually... what about this? Instead make a general-purpose chemical pellet launcher. Like a rapid syringe gun, but it instead accepts up to 6 pills holding, say, 10u of reagents apiece, and splashes the contents of a pill on whatever wall/floor you shoot it at. Dunno how many other applications there'd be- holy water? Space cleaner?

Dagdammit wrote:I'm just saying, give mall cops breaching charges and there'll totally be cases where they look for the slightest excuse to use them and that sounds amazing.

Civilians, am I right?
the funniest part is this will likely end up being a real scenario and i love it

Speaking of TACTICOOL.
Can we bring back AUSOps, sec sprites then? The ones that made sec look pretty formidable despite being shitheads with tasers

we need new gear for sec that is deliberately not tacticool, like a couple pairs of friendship bracelets to give to prisoners to calm them down.
