[POLL]Headminstration 2.5:How should player votes be taken?

Post by QuartzCrystal » #35589

Alright guys, as per the other thread, it seems everyone has come to a consensus that the playerbase, the admins, and the coders will all come to a consensus on who they want to elect to the headmin triumvirate. It seems to be agreed upon that the admins and coders will figure out who their choice will be on their own, but we need to figure out how the players will choose.

The options are an ingame poll, a poll here on the forums, or a poll elsewhere. There are pros and cons to all these options (I wont get into them here) but this is basically the only thing we haven't unanimously agreed upon essentially. Let's also just assume that all polls will provide links to each individual candidate's nomination thread/post. Let's also all agree that if the poll is held not in game, the poll would be left open for a solid amount of time and be linked to in the server's MOTD and the admins will pester people to vote regularly through announcements.

Also, let's just all agree that those voting in the poll and discussing in the other thread should be left up to this decision. Let's not go down the rabbit hole of asking "What's really democratic?" and claiming we should be also having this poll ingame.

In game poll is just as easily abused as a forum poll. There will absolutely be people like braindude firing up VMs and proxies to influence it as much as they can.

I'm personally going to refrain from voting for a bit, although I am leaning towards a forum/elsewhere poll as it does risk people just voting for whoever to make the prompt go away instead of actually thinking about it.

Let's just do an in game poll without the ability to see the results until the poll is over. Less shitstorm that way.

host it on a site and link it in game and on the forums so that everyone can see it and people who dont want to vote dont have to do so to get rid of the annoying poll notification, so "i dont care" votes arent a thing (other than abstaining)

Let's do a two stager, we take the top 3 or five from an ingame poll and then we thunderdome the finalist on the forums were people will actually input stuff.

Do it by "comment forum poll" kind of like the first time. You must comment with reasons, new forum accounts and accounts with proxies/IPs will not be counted.

Only count people that have had byond accounts active on the server for more than 1 month, that way you could mitigate multikey votes and then knock out people that do multiple votes from one connection for multikeying at the same time.

He posted in the other thread and asked how we would conduct the playerbase poll, it's clear he'll just go along with whatever we all decide (aside from him not wanting a headmin decision and giving it to the coders of course).

Correction, all votes should be mailed to me, as Russians are known around the world as masters of freedom, lack of corruption and democracy.

but in all seriousness, ingame poll would probably be the best we can do.

I think that more important than determining where to take the vote is determining what method to use for taking the vote. If we use a traditional first-past-the-post system, I could see us ending up with a single-issue two party split along the lines of pro- and anti-greytide, which would be awful all around.

Instead, I'd recommend performing an instant runoff election.

tl;dr Rank candidates from best to worst, the system counts the votes and removes the candidate with the fewest 'best' votes and goes to the next on the list for everyone who had selected that candidate as 'best', repeat until one candidate has a majority. It's a small increase in complexity for a large increase in responsiveness to the wishes of the playerbase.

I'd say an in-game poll AND a forum poll. A mean of the two results should then be made.

Basicly it has to reflect that game players aren't always forum visitors, but also some game players ignore the in-game polls (as they "just want to start playing") and are more likely to respond on the forums.

Screw it, just give Anon all 3 headmin positions, and unlimited deadminning power, as well as complete control over the message boards. It literally cannot get any worse than how it's going right now.

EDIT: Oh come on HBL, that was the perfect opportunity to say 'U mad bro?" I guess you're pretty ok though, you can be headmins with anon if you want.

Could be, there's kind of an assumption that the forum and the playerbase in general are a bit out of phase sometimes (an assumption I share) so it would be nice to see whether that's actually true.

Since the main focus should always be on the game, though, I support the in-game poll more than anything. That's what it's all about, the forums are just in service of that.

I think we need a democratically elected commune to make decision on a rotatory basis.

Furthermore I propose that the the commune be overseen by a committee elected by commune members and sever on a weekly basis a advised by the server players.

Where's the option that makes the vote happen in the first place? The toilets gotta get flushed sooner or later.

Alright so before anything happens SoS needs to give the go-ahead on the election.

I more or less volunteered to try to facilitate the whole process, at least for the players here on the forums. I dunno if I'll end up being the one to do it, but I figure it's helpful to have someone at least volunteer to make and upkeep the nomination thread(s). (worth noting that I don't want to be a headmin, and I'm cool with all the admins so I have no bias)

Which raises the question: Must the candidate be an admin to apply for headmin? Last time, if I recall, there was a non-admin or two running, though they never got close to winning.

I think it'd be safe to assume so.

Well, a headmin typically has to work with the admin team, which means an understanding of administration is mostly necessary.

So sayeth SoS that you don't need to be a member of the current admin team to run, but you do personally need to contact him before you'll be accepted and all that.
