The most devilish of schemes. Give away your shitty base game for free and not the 300$ worth of dlc that makes it worthwhile.

I wish this wasn't true.
6 Years of Constant improvements and some of them are cosmetic packs that can be skipped.

I'd say the model works

Fun thing to learn and there is plenty of mods, but it boils down to dicerolling and deathstacks.

Getting the full price base game is the hard part at like £30 pounds or $30, buying the DLC in selective chunks is the easy part. If the DLC and the main game were priced the same people would argue that they are reselling smaller parts of the same game for twice the initial investment.

All mind-games, only total value really matters in a DLC buyer's mind.

CosmicScientist wrote:Not really. Essential DLC isn't integrated into the base game over time so new players are constantly playing a game with less features, less buttons, less content than expected on the development side and active community for concerns of balance and fun. That and when you constantly split up features into separate DLC, balance is either lopsided or has to be encapsulated/prevented from having a large impact. e.g. in EU4, Res Publica lets you play the Netherlands the way you're supposed to but if you don't have the DLC which allows supporting bids for independence, you can't play the Netherlands.

The model might work better if they split up DLC not into content packs but features. I'd buy parliament for EU4 if I could get it without development (I don't like ruler mana being used outside of tech & special buttons, that and it fucks with institution spawning/spread/balance). I might also buy the secret societies for CK2 if I didn't need everyone gaining a secret religion. I still don't know which DLCs make monastic orders and protestantism/reformed have gameplay rather than remove it for not being a monarchy/catholicism in EU4 and I'd be more partial to buying those features if I wasn't also spending a lot more for content I either don't care about or actively dislike. None of their grand strategies let you edit the soundtrack in game, as in remove tracks you don't want to hear, besides the skip track button, which can be a problem if you're not file savvy and regret purchasing a music pack DLC.

Cosmetic packs aren't a good thing to argue for when also mentioning half a decade of improvements. Potato faces should not be vanilla after this much investment in the game. Then again, a lot of CK2's graphics are quite dated in some ways and better than expected in others. Graphical resolution is quite pixelated for half of the heraldry icons.
You get all fixes and upgrades for free, the mechanics are there, you just cant play as the races that have those mechanics or access them outside of the DLC owners.

It's totally fair, doesn't even split up the multiplayer community either.

I've put 200 hours into CK2 and I haven't even touched non christian nations.

Well considering i dont have many hours at the game im having a jolly old time having created the kingdom of ireland & created a successive heir to inherit scotland & ireland by wooing a rebel scot queen (complicated that one, i betrothed my son to the scot king's only daughter, king kicked the bucket and lost their title in a war versus Norway *william the conquerer didn't bother invading* then the royal blood countess came to live over in ireland with my now considerably sizable munster duchy got pregnant, then went back to lead her rebels in scotland wherin i pushed her war to put her on the scottish throne and enshrine my own heirs right to rule both kingdoms)

Free game is still pretty fun, i will definitely be eying up DLC though. I wish they'd do something about the janky assignment of commanders to armies.

You can't say half hte game isn't there.

The game on release was a complete and totallly playable game. People brought it and enjoyed it irrespective of the DLC extras or not.

It's not fair to criticise paradox for adding new features and selling them as DLC with the line that "if you don't buy the DLC half the game isn't there"

that stuff never existed at launch, and actually you get the launch game with extra features when you pay for the game now, so you're actually getting more than those who got it at launch got, for less than they paid.

if you think paradox's dlc model is broken then you are very demanding.

In an industry with shit like EA by comparison Paradox's business model is incredibly beneficial to gamers. They've never got it perfectly but it's better than a lot out there. Admittedly with EUIV and CK2 there are certain DLC which are far more beneficial than others but considering how often they go on sale it isn't a lot to ask for.
So uhh, I'm an admin. Please leave feedback! Oops took me a while to strike that through.
