Pre-Round Departmental Sprite Selection
On #coderbus while we were discussing the Security sprite debate a interesting idea was put forward (Edit: From MrPerson I think) that I wish to, at the very least, get it written down on the forums. The idea is simple, allow anyone to use the "Setup Character" screen to select which security sprites his/her department will use when they are the Head of Security (or head of that department).
So for example, you could chose to have the old (pre-ausops) sprites used, or use the corporate security sprites or anything inbetween.
This would allow anyone to create their own unique departmental sprites and have them added to the game, while allowing the department head to select their preferd department style. This would obviously allow us to avoid any future spriteing wars. I can also see it used for holiday themed events, such as forcing all departments to use a Christmas themed sprite set.
Thank you.

I feel like this would prevent childish squabbling and open up room for creativity.

Re: Pre-Round Departmental Sprite Selection
Would want this reused for Borg names, borg sprite, borg module, AI names, AI sprite, chaplain bible, chaplain religion, chaplain god, name for each job, and all the other heads of staff and their department's appearances. Later we can hook in assistants choosing their jumpsuit color and possibly other things.

Why? We can do that quickly IC.MisterPerson wrote:Would want this reused for Borg names, borg sprite, borg module, AI names, AI sprite, chaplain bible, chaplain religion, chaplain god, name for each job
maybe, but not HOP or Captain. They have very distinctive outfits.all the other heads of staff and their department's appearances.
pre-round planning for "RED TIDE"Later we can hook in assistants choosing their jumpsuit color and possibly other things.

Re: Pre-Round Departmental Sprite Selection
So that if I play as a Chaplain, all the religion fields (bible, religion, etc) are already filled out before hand and I can get right into it, same for AI/Borg names, sprites and modules.Saintish wrote:Why? It would save time but also better allow you to customise your appearance before a game begins.

Re: Pre-Round Departmental Sprite Selection
It also makes adding more options on that easier and more consistent instead of having ad-hoc solutions.
I was talking about choosing the outfits of all your subservients so the CE can decide what the engineering jumpsuits will be this shift, HoP decides on cargo, etc.

Re: Pre-Round Departmental Sprite Selection
Nienhaus's sprites raise a very good point, right now your very limited in spiriting new uniforms because its very rare for a department to see their uniforms be changed. If a system akin to this is implemented it would allow people to contribute entire departmental sprite overhauls and allow us to use them in game.
E: To preempt a obvious question, if there is no departmental head on that shift, then either the sprites should use the "default" departmental sprites or select a style at random.

Re: Pre-Round Departmental Sprite Selection
Unless it's too complex, it could go Head->Any 'sub' heads like Warden or QM->Captain->Default/Random
Maybe? Random is probably best to avoid drama over what should be 'default'.

Re: Pre-Round Departmental Sprite Selection
Random always would also be cool if that's what people want. Hell that would be even easier and simpler than options.
Obviously the sprites would be tweaked so they're not that different so no matter what sprites get picked, they're still recognizable as being the same job.

Re: Pre-Round Departmental Sprite Selection
Yeah, there would have to be departmental consistency in sprite designs, and I think random will avoid unneeded arguments that I know will occur when that discussion occurs.

I like the idea of the Head choosing department sprites.

Include clown and mime names so as to cut down on the mad rush to pick a shitty name and then disposal dunk your counterpart before they can leave the name selection prompt.MisterPerson wrote:Would want this reused for Borg names, borg sprite, borg module, AI names, AI sprite, chaplain bible, chaplain religion, chaplain god, name for each job, and all the other heads of staff and their department's appearances. Should mention pap made a PR for this over here: https://github.com/tgstation/-tg-station/pull/6484
Hopefully he is able to finish it.

Re: Pre-Round Departmental Sprite Selection
This is nothing to do with departmental sprite selection or anything, just for players to choose sets of clothing to spawn in as for certain jobs. I could possibly reuse it for borg/AI name, but this isn't close to what you're suggesting. That would require much more time, effort, and UI knowledge to implement.

Re: Pre-Round Departmental Sprite Selection
Yeah I know, it's just something the job datum itself should be doing imo, not the job controller, gameticker, or new_player mob. Determining which jobs need this and, if so, which options they have I mean.
You can do just the round sprites, that's ok, just consider extensions to the code and how it might be implemented by someone down the line. The interface there is already busy.
