Portable Contraband Scanner

Post by CDranzer » #547088

Device as I picture it:
Handheld device, same size as any kind of analyzer, comes out of Security Lockers/Protolathes/Vendors
Walk up to a person, use scanner on them, and after, say, three seconds of both parties holding still, you get a window showing their entire inventory contents - Clothing, pockets, bags, boxes, containers within containers and their contents, etc - a full tree.

Why:
Random searches are supposed to be a thing, but they're currently a miserable experience for all parties involved - It's a slow and tedious process, you can't do it in a public area without risk of theft, and it's so disruptive to the recipient that if you do it with any kind of frequency you're likely to earn the ire of the crew. To this end, provide security with an actual tool to do it quick and dirty on the field.

Additional thoughts:
What happens when a player messes with their inventory mid-scan? Maybe you could have the scan happen at the last moment and if the player just drops a box at the last second and immediately picks it up hopefully that'll be seen as suspicious enough? Can random bags be scanned? Upgraded versions with longer range and shorter scan time? Do chameleon clothes fool the scanner? Some kind of item that you can buy that disguises the contents of a bag? Maybe some easily-built civilian device that prevents the scanner from reading the contents of a bag, enough to be suspicious but not enough to clearly mark you as a perpetrator? Interaction with storage implants?

random searching is powergame trash unless you HAVE to do it in reaction to a situation (in which case it is no longer random).

That said I don't mind something that allows for quicker searching but less extensive so people can slip by with more covert items.

random searches arent a thing because they take too long and are tedious to do properly without pissing the other guy off

if you remove those problems theres nothing stopping mass random searches. if you dont agree with it and resist its pretty clear you have something to hide and you get dunked

pretty much this
if searches aren't a pain in the ass with a legitimate reason for an innocent person to refuse one, be it the time taken or the non-zero chance that some shithead assistant will steal your shit as they run by, suddenly failing to submit to a scan becomes a suspicious act

I think a better idea would be a way too look in someones bags/other storage stuff without taking it off them. Would require the same do after time as plain stripping them but allows you to search people without risking stuff being stolen.

Perhaps we need to look at this from a different angle.
What if the scanner required some kind of smarts by the sec officer to use? Similarly to cobbychems
(good move btw)
Give them the upside if being fast, easy, and nonintrusive.
However the downside of carrying health risks/being hard to use effectively/taking a long time.
Sec guy can't just scan the whole hopline if it takes a minute for one person, or irradiates both them and you.

This seems like the best idea tbh, i'll try to code it within the week if storage code allows for this

again, the risk of your shit being stolen gives someone a good reason to want to refuse without the officer being able to instantly go "they refused a search, that's SUSPICIOUS, CHASE THEM DOWN AND SEARCH THEM BY FORCE"

Random searches are not allowed on blue alert. Searches are allowed only with probable cause. On red alert it's free game. Green alert random searches are not allowed.

I think this would be a good mid-late game tech.

Do your job, searching shouldn't be as easy as that.
