Windows 10 - the message on the tgstation13 welcome page

Unread postby CosmicScientist » Wed Feb 03, 2016 2:47 pm #151318

I've started this in off topic because this is more about Windows 10 than the website itself.

For those that haven't seen it, this is the text of the message, no need for a screencap:

tgstation13.org wrote:
Hey! Listen! WARNING
Windows 7 and 8 users be warned: Microsoft is now automatically installing windows 10 to everybody with recommended updates
enabled with no warning or option.
Disable recommended updates, and see this tool to flat out disable windows 10 updates and notices: GWX Control Panel if you don't want
windows 10.

It's a tad late for that. Even the Guardian (a UK newspaper) managed to find out and release details in September.

Just to reiterate the message in case anyone misread it (I did), this does not mean you're being forced to upgrade. Instead it means you've likely already downloaded Windows 10 itself. To check, if you're using Windows I assume just 7 or 8, I doubt anything older's included, enable being able to see hidden folders and files, go to your main driver (if you don't know what I mean, go to your computer/this PC area and look for the storage areas, one should be called C:) and look for a folder called $WINDOWS.~BT, that's Windows 10, taking up probably over 6GB on your system (you can check with right click > properties). If you delete it then you'll likely get slow internet for a while and break your usage cap (if you have one, maybe you'll just get throttled for being a data hog) as Microsoft downloads it again in the background.

MSO edit, not true: http://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly ... ee66ee75eb
Cosmo edit: I'm terrible at Googling, I am sorry. Thanks for finding an article on it.

So how do you feel about this?
My thoughts: My rethought thoughts:
Spoiler:
Personally I feel half like I'm in some film or Doctor Who plot (mainly the one with the environmentally friendly cars) where the bad guys have downloaded software to take over your computer and are now asserting their authority by controlling what you do and limiting what cat pictures you're allowed to see on the web. The other half of how I feel is that, well, the sky's blue, the Moon drags the tides and Microsoft has a stranglehold on their market (akin to Steam if that helps perspective), I have little I can do if they aren't forcing upgrades since they are forcing upgrades because my only alternatives are Mac and Linux unless there's also an Opera alternative like for web browsers (I doubt it'd be well supported as just something for easy personal use or is that Linux anyway?) and why would I ever want to dirty my refined palette with those god awful operating systems and related hardware, how uncouth.

Besides that whilst they're dumb for distributing it like this and their PR in the articles I found about it was picked apart to show off the worst parts/was as good as politician's; evasive and full of twaddle. It makes sense with the way they did it so that those upgrading didn't have to realise Microsoft is breaking usage caps/preventing them from using their computer to look at cat pics/play spessmen whilst they wait for it to download and install for I don't know how long; longer than the average user's patience, which is important because this isn't niche or a regular hassle, this is a very lowest common denominator OS that is supposed to last for some time. Cosmo edit: this is irrelevant to the topic at hand now.

Oh and my opinion might be clouded by Windows 7 and 8 having what might as well be the same data gathering system as 10 does besides what they use for Cortana aaand that I want to upgrade to 10 at some point (I'm lazy) on my laptop because I was forced (I'm lazy) into Windows 8 on it when I bought it. Cosmo edit: fuck Microsoft and their stranglehold. Now I'm even thinking Steam isn't that bad because they don't actively cut off necessary options. Fucking standards being dropped.

I just hope that some european courts slam them for this and tell them to stop this shit or get banned from several countries, but we all know those are corrupt as fuck and give no shits anyway

Also, you can turn off the data gathering for windows 7 and 8 if you block those updates.
I downright refuse to move to windows 10 until I can get a modified version that removes all spyware. Fuck that shit

BTW for the people who want to upgrade but prefer a fresh install to an upgrade of your existing Windows version:

You need to perform the upgrade at least once. This lets Microsoft register your Windows 7/8 key as a Windows 10 key. Without going through this, your key won't be registered and you can't use it to validate Windows 10.

Once you've performed the upgrade this way once, you can go ahead and do a fresh install. Your key might not initially work when installing Windows 10, but you can install pre-emptively without a key and if the key is stored in your BIOS then Win10 will recognise it as valid once it's installed, else you can enter it after installing.

The sad thing is there will never be an alternative OS to Windows that could effectively run all programs designed for Windows. Eventually 7 and 8 will go the way of XP and we'll be forced to upgrade regardless.

I have no bloody clue now. I've looked in my update area and the image on the linked article. It's in the optional update section and its box is automatically checked, I think the article's being sensationalist.

See, it's in the optional section in the article... which every article I come across is saying it's no longer optional and now recommended... but it's not? I looked into my update scheme and I gueeess this affects people with auto updates applied to their optional updates?

It flat out asks you how much of this shit you want to turn off when installing.
The government already has every means it could possibly want to monitor every aspect of your life if it feels like it.

Refusing to upgrade to Windows 10 does absolutely nothing to protect your privacy.
Enjoy your false sense of security. Maybe if you stopped downloading child porn or whatever the fuck you do that has you so afraid you wouldn't have to worry about this.

"But it's the principal of the thing"

Stop. You have a cellphone? You have bills and taxes? You're using a public ISP?
Then you've already sacrificed that principal for convenience anyway.

Uh, my point on privacy was that since 7 and 8 have the same lack of it (I don't think I'd ever expect data not being gathered in literally any mass produced system that accesses online content?) the weight of privacy on the decision is moot.

I tried to run windows 10 on this laptop, it ran like crap and because the machine was old lenovo refused to put out key driver updates to ensure proper compatibility in windows 10. Meaning not only don't I want windows 10, but it also represents a clear and existential threat to my laptop.

I upgraded to Win 10 more than half a year ago and haven't looked back. It's better than win 7 and win 8.1. All the cries and complaints I hear tend to be about minor things, which you can easily deal with. Most complaints really remind me of TGS' general outrage over every minor change ever.

Win 10 tells you what is collected and gives you the option to disable it - unlike google, amazon, apple, ebay, steam, ubisoft, ea or every retailer, app or ad provider out there. The upgrade is a good one. Unless you have a legitimate reason (old computer, weird driver, need for IE6), I recommend you just stop whining, get on with it and install the new version. Otherwise use GWX Control Panel to shut off the notification.

Yes, yes, I know Microsoft are pushy about Windows 10. And I'm sure that for many of you it's more about pride than any actual reason to not simply upgrade. You can be as outraged as you want and whine for as long as you find it enjoyable, but the much simpler solution to this issue is to upgrade and realize how irrelevant the complaints are.

As I've mentioned, however, there are some legitimate reasons to not upgrade. Those of you with legitimate reasons, yeah, outrage away, RAAA. etc.

TL;DR:
Just upgrade. It's FINE...
Also you should be personally offended by this post, even if you only read the TL;DR and quote random parts of it and say that microsoft needs to respect your choice or whatever, just like facebook and youtube when they update their design...
The bureaucracy is expanding to meet the needs of the expanding bureaucracy.

It's a general incremental improvement on most fronts and is essentially a bit better across the board. It also runs much better than the previous versions. If you want a point-by-point breakdown of why it's better, take a look at something like http://www.zdnet.com/topic/windows-10/ or https://www.thurrott.com/windows/windows-10

It gives you the option to disable everything people find problematic in the installation process, so long as you don't choose express install. It tells you what each option does, what it's used for, etc. It's actually surprisingly informative and honest. That's probably why there is outrage - because they actually said what buttons do, unlike the other providers, who hide this stuff in their EULA.
The bureaucracy is expanding to meet the needs of the expanding bureaucracy.

Sounds like you got Windows 7 Enterprise, that version isn't eligible for the free upgrade because of its group licensing.

That's an unreasonable expectation, unfortunately. All software, including all versions of windows since Vista, collect telemetery data, that's how they know how the OS is used, what to work on, where it fails, etc. Nobody cares whether you wear boxers or briefs or what kind of porn you like. All they care about is how you use their software and what they could do to make it better.

On that front, going from Win 7 or Win 8.1 to Win 10 makes no difference.

To sum it up Takeguru, the article says in too many words that from the 1st of February, Windows 10 has been moved to a "recommended" update but is in the optional section of updates or it existing in the optional section means it's "recommended". That either means it'll switch you from 7 to 10 if you install optional updates or you have your system and security update settings to install optional updates without asking you. I don't know how the Windows update process works but when I checked my scheme it had it set to do it the same for optional updates as important ones (update without asking) however that means little to me when I have a bunch of optional updates that have been sitting on my machine for however long... except their check box isn't checked unlike the 10 update.

SO SUMMING IT UP PROPERLY: change your optional update scheme in control panel > system and security to ask you first and it probably won't slip by accidentally like a phishing email you get whilst running on one hour's sleep.

The development sees Microsoft follow through on its controversial October roadmap which said Windows 10 would have its status changed in 2016 to become a ‘Recommended’ upgrade in Windows Update. In basic terms this means anyone who uses Windows 7 or Windows 8 with default Windows Update settings (the vast majority) will now see Windows 10 begin installing by itself.

The good news is Windows 7 and Windows 8 users will still have the power to interrupt the installation once it has started, but this still represents by far the most aggressive measure Microsoft has taken to achieve its stated goal of one billion Windows 10 installations by 2017.

Edit: Eh? Forums, y u no tell me people post things before I finish mine? Does it being automatically checked prevent it from coming up to ask you about it when it decides to pop it in?

No, it's not unreasonable at all. You can disable data collection in W7, I even linked how. You can't do that in W10, especially on non-enterprise versions. Also is collection of ANY data on opt-in basis so unreasonable now? Is this the world we live in? Well it doesn't have to be.

Not even two hours after i started my shift, I got a client whos computer had it's hard drive soft wiped by the windows 10 automatic update.

Something happened, and it managed to corrupt the partition table, i had to restore it, some files were too fragmented to recover.

Far as i could tell, it must have been trying to update the ntfs table to the new format and error-ed out. SMART showed nothing out of shape on the hard drive.

Don't you think it's possible that your client performed a quick format during windows installation and blamed it on an error?

No, i could tell a windows 10 update took place, and it showed as an automatic update shutdown in the recovered event logs. I'm didn't get to be running this place by trusting the client to tell the whole story.

Unless your computer is from 2003 and running on fumes with 2gb of ram it can handle windows 10. The "my hardware can't handle it!!!" shit is bogus. If you're on windows 7 or 8/8.1, the versions that are auto-updating, you can handle 10. if you're still so fucking afraid it'll break, google all your manufacturers for your computer parts and look for their guide on how to fix windows 10 issues IF THERE EVEN IS AN ISSUE and do whatever it says

@Goof
Okay, that's all fine and good, but they're forcing an update that has a fairly high chance of rendering a lot of software incompatible and there's already people complaining about bricked drives because of it.

It's the fact they're doing this in a very sneaky way that has people up in arms, Microsoft being relatively transparent with their data collection is just more fuel to the fire.

See, Takeguru, you have a point, but they do as well. I heard their chief marketing officer interviewed, he basically said that they are aware that they are being pushy, but that alternatives have simply not worked. They are experimenting with how pushy they can be, how many people they can get to upgrade using various techniques, etc.

Link to interview (8:24 - 1:12:00)

@goofball: Denying that there are issues is silly. It's more about whether or not the issues are understood correctly, whether they are as severe as the click-hungry media report them, and whether they are in fact deal-breakers or just minor annoyances.
- Windows 10 offers a feature which syncs wifi passwords between devices and allows you to share them with contacts on skype, facebook, etc. It was misreported that this is on by default, when in fact it isn't. The issue was that one of the services was on, but it did nothing until explicit permission was given. This caused needless outrage.
- Cortana can be allowed to scan through your email, calendar, history, etc. to make the service better. You need to both explicitly enable Cortana and can tell what it can look through. For comparison, "Hey Google" already does this, without asking you.
The bureaucracy is expanding to meet the needs of the expanding bureaucracy.

Literally.
What.
Are you talking about.

There are compatibility reasons. There are driver reasons. There are 'all my software is configured and working and I don't want to go through a lot of hassle to reconfigure it it for window 10 because there is zero practical reason curently to change" reasons.
There are also minimum requiremnt reasons for some people, but I never said that, and I don't think anyone else in the thread has said that either.
