I've seen people make fully automated meth factories in the confines of cargos warehouse so that's probably a good minimum size.

Finding space for a giant square/rectangle is pretty hard right now though in most cases.

I can understand to an extent how you feel about it being bare bones and I am trying to take steps to fix that (mostly maintenance currently), but do you have any examples of what makes you feel like that? I can see a few areas that could be touched up but otherwise I'm not entirely sure.

if you need more than a roundstart beaker of mutagen from chemistry then you're either a bad botanist or EXTREMELY unlucky with mutations. Mutagen blumpkins should be your first project and only take a few minutes.

Donut as a map was always kind of a joke, it existed for people to clap and laugh at the idea of the funny round station with an engine located in the middle. Engine delamination is usually a shuttle call anyway so I don't see the issue with it exploding actually being a threat to more than just the Engineering department.

I will look into the AI sat though, not a fan of it myself anyway.
