Cuboos's Sound Showcase thread

Can i get this stickied? Since there aren't enough people doing sounds to justify a whole forum.

So we have a code showcase, a mapping showcase and a sprite showcase, but no sound showcase... Understandably because until recently there was no sound guy -- i'm the sound guy by the way. Since my sound idea forum has been lost in the sea of dead threads, i thought i'd make a forum dedicated to showing off my sounds.

So people have talked about all sorts of sounds need, "We need a better sound of this!", "this need's it's own sound!", ect. So here's what i've done so far.

New explosions!

Explosion1.ogg
Explosion2.ogg
explosionfar.ogg

The current explosion sounds were shit, sounded like a weak fart. These have some "oompf" to them, now when you get gibbed, you'll feel it.

New weapon sounds!
Laser.ogg
Taser.ogg
IonRifle.ogg
ZapBang.ogg

A few people on coderbus expressed that they didn't really like the current weapon sounds, especially the taser/stun setting, sounded too "pew pew", not threatening enough. The Ion rifle was also in desperate need for a unique sound. ZapBang currently is not intended for anything, but everyone liked it, maybe for the pulse rifle or something, don't know yet.

Toys!
Nuke_toy_lowpoer.ogg

I heard some one request (forget who) a sound the nuke toy should play when it's recharging, rather than be silent, i took it as an opportunity to play around with a plugin i downloaded that makes things sound like it's being played through a speak and spell.

Mic:
announce.ogg << edited to be a bit more echo-ey, like it's being played in a big metal hall.(For Comparison, here's the old)
New captain's announcement, current one is shitty with lots of background noise (if you listen carefully, you can hear people talking in the background), also this one sounds more digital/computery/spessy

Alternativly, this here is the original announcement chime from the very thing that inspired it (this stupid audio log me and Miggles did)

Defib:

Defib was lacking any unique sounds and sounded too much like a possible rev round if you weren't paying attention.

Mining!
Pickaxe:
picaxe1.ogg

picaxe3.ogg
No longer the lamp "tapping" sound for hitting rock walls, now each mining equipment contains it's own unique sound!

Resonator:
resonator_fire.ogg
For when you "Click" on something with the resonator

resonator_blast.ogg
For when the resonator "Destroys" something.

Kinetic Accelorator:
Kenetic_accel.ogg
Kenetic_reload.ogg
Sound names are pretty self explanatory, coderbus liked them. No more lame "shotgun" sounds.

Sonic Jackhammer:
sonic_jackhammer.ogg
Coderbus couldn't decide what they liked, so i went with this kind of dull "thunk" sound, some describe it like an over sized nail gun. Sounds okay in world, see how people react to it before any changes are made.

Drills:
drill.ogg
sort of inspired by the surgical saw. This one took a lot of tries before i managed to get one everyone liked.

Plasma Cutter:
plasma_cutter.ogg
Tried to get something that sounded like the one from Dead Space, "without sounding like dead space"

Shovel:
shovel_dig.ogg
Original shovel sound was just the rustling sound, now it actually sounds like you're shoveling dirt! REAL DIRT!

I like the explosion sounds and the captains announcement.

The laser does not sound to different than what we have currently, the Taser and Ion Rifle sounds almost identical to one another, I would use the Ion Rifle sound however as the Taser sound we have is fine imo.

What I wanted the Captain's announcement to sound like was the typical chime you'd hear in public announcement systems, like in schools or even mass transit.

What you have might sound better if it sounded like it was being played throughout the station, echoing down the cold metal hallways. Right now I don't get any of that environmental aspect in the sound. It's far too perfect.

Actually, I am quite partial to the chime from that "The Comdom" announcement! Add reverb to that and it would be the perfect replacement, with the added bonus of being a familiar reference for anyone who listened to those voice clips!

That is because the plasma cutter (in Dead Space) was actually used as a gun! Of course in SS13 it is used as the primary anti-blob melee weapon and a decent pickaxe to give the miners. I prefer the current sound, but I am obviously biased due to having played all of the games and watched the movies.

but since it doesnt actually function as a gun in ss13, i dont think it should sound like one

Awful. The taser sounds quiet and weaksauce in game, announcer is a flute now for god one knows what reason, and explosions are either from Steel Panthers or Combat Mission.

Sounds were fine, they didn't needed changing.

Sounds were fine, they didn't needed changing.

Blame the maintainers for that, i gave them the fixed versions and they wen't with the old versions anyway.

I would love a new theme. Our current one is basically a remix of robocop anyway, if cuboos could tear that one apart and make a cool lobby song that would be a fresh hot new mixup for our players, sure.

the looping background instrument is really weird and flat. the rest of it is 10/10 though.

By the way ol' Nar-Nar rises, and the nature of the thing, I'm surprised that that sound is so quiet.
I'd always imagined something flashier - after all, that is reality being torn apart on a large scale, there.

Nar'sie rising sounds great

Spell incantation sounds are fine as long as they can only be heard if you're in whispering range of the caster.

First biting noise has like 0.2 seconds of actual biting and then 2 full seconds of bizarrely out of place wet dripping noises
Second biting noise does it better with a kind of squish noise but the first one doesn't make me think of a bite
