More hardsuits need to be fireproof

Post by mikecari » #60102

Especially for commanding officers like the captain and even the security hardsuits. If the AI releases a plasma fire the command staff is totally fucked with the exception of the chief engineer. It would make sense that security and command hardsuits wouldn't be fucking flammable.

idk if you know this but space insulation =/= countering the equivalent of napalm on your suit

as far as gameplay goes, git gud

Hardsuits are designd for EVA work, which means you know, space. There ain't a lot of fire without atmosphere. Atmos techs and the CE on the otherhand are expected to go into atmospherically unsafe areas, such as FIRE, and so are immune to it.

This seems pretty straight forward.

Doesn't make an awful lot of sense for spacesuits to be fireproof, I'm afraid. They're not insulating, they're fully sealed environments... unless ours are pressure-based now, after the change from fat spacesuits...

Doesn't matter. Each type of hardsuit having pros and cons over others is interesting from a gameplay perspective, so don't make fireproofing generic.

I don't know where people are getting "Spacesuits are not firesuits lol." Anyone who says that has no idea what actually needs to go into a spacesuit.

Pretty much every spacesuit on the planet is at least fire resistant simply for safety reasons, and suits are extremely heavily insulated because of how space actually works where the temperatures you are being exposed to range wildly. Being in space tends to be a good way to be lit on fire if you are in a bladder full of oxygen considering you are being directly exposed to the radiation from the sun. Life threatening sunburn is actually a real risk in space, and if the suits were not graded for something well beyond a pathetic little fire on the station anyone going on a spacewalk would be cooked.

The station has solar pannels, meaning that EVA workers would sometimes be exposed to the planet's sun, yet you don't die of heat exhaustion because you are baking in the sun. Anything graded for vaccum and the wide variance of extreme cold to extreme heat in space would be heavily resistant to fire. It is almost certain that the firesuits on station are made out of whatever the hardsuits are, that is sort of how we get our modernday firesuits, NASA invents them for spacesuits.

That said...

Yeah, Get gud. Hardsuits being an ultimate trump card against fire damage would be sort of boring even if it was realistic, would be kinda killer to game balance. Fire is already way harder to get on station than a hole in the station and "Because realism" isn't really an argument.

Space suits in game do have bi-directional thermal insulation because thats how insulation works - this was actually one of the first things I commited to github.

Found this interesting document:
http://history.nasa.gov/spacesuits.pdf

Looks like the Apollo space suits were rated up to 427.594 degrees Kelvin.
Spacesuits in game protect up to 1,500 kelvin
Firesuits protect up to 30,000 kelvin (I still have no idea why this was changed from 10k), their real-life counter parts can only protect to 1366.483 kelvin

I think this needs to be approached from a balance point of view, not a realism point of view.

Anyway, my opinion is that there are all too many hardsuits with firesuit protection.

If anything the atmos suits should protect for less, with only the CE's getting the full firesuit protection (it is after all its meant to be the advanced suit, right now its not much better than the atmos suit), the argument for atmos getting one was so they could build cooling arrays and patch up hull breaches.

And put the firesuit protection value back down to 10,000.
Its bad enough shock damage was nerfed to the point of uselessness, borgs are incredibly gimped; fire is the last useful tool the malf AI has.

There needs to be SOME complete fire protection with our current fire fighting mechanics, but it does not need to be more common than a single job pick. Putting it on the CE suit exclusively is a bad idea, but it should have it considering he also runs atmost, he just often doesn't act like it.

Atmospherics having the best fire suits is fine by me. EODs probably should have enough fire protection to allow you to flee as well simply because bomb mechanics have them result in plenty of fires and it would be odd for a defective bomb to be deadlier than an exploded one.

Bombsuits providing near-complete(90-95%) fire resistance sounds fair, limits it to science and sec, leaves more opportunities for someone to pull the emergency siphon and keep a station fire from being a 100% shuttle call.

Hardsuits have thermal insulation sure, but that's not going to help against a fire that is strong enough to melt the damn floor.

That said, that's more of an issue that we only have one kind of fire, caused by 20 different things. Getting set on fire with a rag soaked in whiskey causes the exact same fire as running into burning plasma.
