I don't see the point of a new job, this would be just like telecomms, a complex snowflakey machinery thing that requires specific knowledge of how it works but you don't really have to touch it unless it's not working properly. And we don't have a "telecomm specialist" job. yes we do have atmos tech but that's more of a legacy thing since this game is basically an atmos simulator and you can do disposal rides and stuff
Just put it under the janitor, after all he's the one responsible for all the watery things, and if a toilet overflows at your workplace/school who's the first guy you're gonna call? Guess who, it's the fucking janitor.

Also I don't really understand what the Synthesizer is gonna do, you say it makes water by default but you also say that it feeds all objects that require reagents, so is it gonna feed stuff like chem and booze dispensers too? Meaning you can bomb it and cut off all chemical supplies?

The synthesizer feeds water to things that require it, like showers, sprinklers, sinks, and toilets. Dispensers remain independent. If you bomb it, it will cut off the flow of reagents to the things that require them.
I didn't want to put this to the janitor because they already have a decent amount of responsibility on their own.

Well I was using the telecomm example because it falls under engineering even though they already have a lot of responsibility.
Janitor duties:
  • cleaning
  • cockblock light-breaking thralls
  • HERO OF THE STATION when a slaughter demon shows up
I guess he could squeeze a maintenance stop to check the synthesizer once in a while, I just can't see plumbing as a full time job with the stuff you described.

Also those water sprinklers could really nerf station fires to the point of making them harmless, might be a pretty heavy change.

Current problem is there is very little you can do with this outside of sabotage. Mass producing healing chems is nice but a few of people use magic sink water as a vital part of their job (Botany, Xenobiology, Chef). It kinda feels like a watered down (heh) atmos at the moment. You can create mass chaos with it (via sprinkler sabotage), and not much else. Maybe if drinking normal water had some sort of benefit so poisoning the water supply would actually have a point.

Very nice, but couldn't plumber merged with atmospheric technician duties since neither job has much to do anyway?

I would kinda agree. I mean, Atmos Techs are kinda the pipe lords already. Though Atmos Tech would need to be renamed.

Yeah, Maybe to "Maintenance"
it's a broad enough term to cover atmos and plumbing.

Maintenance Staff perhaps? You could merge Janitor into that role. They would be responsible for keeping things running, whilst engineers would be the guys who fix things that stop running.

for now it's pretty much just the ability to make sinks dispense different reagents and a job to go with it
merging the jobs/tweaking how it works can be saved for after the base product is finished

Oh boy, MORE ways for singuloth to lag the station to shit.

I like a new sprinkler system for fire alarms, but ensure they're not up at roundstart, lest fires be nerfed to oblivion.

Also: > "Plumbers are the only ones who can understand all the complex workings of the machine by default". Does this mean it's hard-coded that only plumbers can use plumbing equipment? If so, fuck that shit, terrible mentality to have while coding anyway. Besides, why could anyone, with the right access, fuck with singuloth, tcomms, the AI upload, and atmospherics, but oh no, my precious plumbing is only touchable by those special snowflake roundstart plumbers with their maximum hard RP because we can't be having anyone fixing the water supply after the water becomes acid, and we also need to know EXACTLY who to blame for a mishap.

Just fucking no. The exact same information should be provided regardless of who looks at it as well.

It does make sense for janitors to man the new plumbing system imo. I feel they would be a better fit than atmos techs because atmos techs have the tools to fix the station like engineers do to pass the time, whilst janitors really just clean shit, and on rounds where there isn't much dirt than the randomly spawned shit on the ground at round start, you quickly get bored.

The water gen requires maintenance?

Does that mean all the sinks and shit are going to stop working because you have no plumber man? Because that's pretty shitty.

it's a giant machine that makes infinite black powder/nanomachines/whatever the fuck and is potentially hundreds of times more devastating than a gravity generator if tampered with, and therefore should be maintained to prevent sabotage/to be upgraded with medicine

what part of this don't you guys get

Any upgrades would actively screw over botanists, xenobiologists, and chefs. Any tampering done would be basically instantly discovered by the same jobs shift clicking their buckets, but I guess it would be kinda useful if you could also orchestrate a plasma fire to set off the sprinklers and cover the halls in chlorine trifluoride/mutagen.

Seems like a fair ol nerf to plasma fires in non-traitor play though.

Why not have the janitors be responsible for it instead of making a whole new job, and throw janitors under the purview of engineering while adding another slot? What could POSSIBLY go wrong?

I think it could work as a shared responsibility between engineering and custodial staff. The janitors could be in charge of the general upkeep while the engineering/atmos teams perform the actual maintenance when things break

It's sneezing, not coughing, and the ability to rain infected blood allows you to scrap the sneezing symptom if you wanted to make your virus more difficult to cure with extra buff symptoms or making it hard to cure AND stealthy, which usually sneezing stops you from doing.
