The Mining Shuttle: Destroyer of Worlds

Post by Lilah » #183198

So, lots of miners keep dying, especially at the very beginning of games, because someone recalls the mining shuttle or what have you, and the people trying to get off the shuttle get wrecked. I've had multiple ahelps about it recently.
I feel it might be prudent to put some kind of "safety" system in place. Give the shuttle some seconds and a warning before it leaves. (For example, a 5 second delay before take off, and it says, "Warning: The shuttle is about to take off" or something to let people know they need to scram.)
Or, even a warning in the window, saying, "Alert your fellow miners, make sure it's safe to call it."

It's just one of those things where there's no warning, and in the end it's not really anybody's fault, so it can be immensely frustrating. People seem to react pretty strongly to it, because it is pretty unfair to die at the very beginning to something like that, especially when you're about to go onto an area where everything is trying to kill you anyway. Give those poor miners a chance.
I don't know how difficult it would be to code these things, so I'm no ideas guy! I apologize if there's any obvious misunderstanding about how the system works, here.

Thanks!

A delay isn't a bad idea. It would also keep shitters from spamming the shuttle console when you forgot to buckle keeping you permastunned. Though that tends to happen on the gulag when you took the prisoner's cuffs off. Lesson there is to always leave a prisoner zip tied in gulag.

The mining/gulag shuttles USED to have a delay on send/receive requests. Then again this was probably to simulate the "Travel" part because they didn't used to pop into travel mode like the emergency shuttle does.

Some red warning lights for flavor wouldn't be bad though.

Which means gulag has a capacity of one or someone is left to babysit them for eternity.

The instant shuttle shit is a product of carn's shuttle rewrite.

I told her several times in PMs on IRC to not have it be instant because it was gonna lead to this shit.

She told me to get fucked. But then again she's british.

I rather have bay shuttle transfer
Where the door bolts first before it can lift off

Would be nice if there was a delay with a warning siren on the shuttle.
Add an option to hack the console by multitooling the board/AI hack to remove the delay as a potential means of murder.

This was brought up as I said when it became apparent people could fight over you in the gulag shuttle like happened to me. What I recall happening was some people thought good it could turn into a game of repeated stuns, buckling in terror of said stuns and maybe being spaced because some guys hated gulag.

Same could just as easily happen to you on the mining shuttle though it just takes 2 chuckle fucks to team up at the consoles and it becomes a zone of pure pain.

Having the doors shut and bolt before launch would fix this, maybe a 1-2 second delay?

Emagging or tampering with the console could result in the safety-free verzion we have now..

The suggestion of a small wait seems good to me. I think it would really help to save some people the headache of an early-round roasting due to an uncontrollable accident.
