It is only a fallacy if it does not come true. When lizards were added some people were pissed about it, said it was a gateway to cantinastation bullshit. Anyways, since the only complaints seem to be thematic, I assume their functionality is fine and no one has issues with it.
I was worried that the back slot restriction was too harsh, since I heard some negative feedback on the servers, but no one in the thread is complaining.

Also, neither kor nor I added them to lavaland, it was mmmiracles.
I did the coding for wings and flight and commissioned the sprites from kor's gf since I have no artistic ability.
They were never planned for lavaland directly. I kinda wanted to add them for an archangel antag that's delayed due to coiax working on datum antags.

Humans and lizards use the same customization system. Snowflake lizards would need to be removed too. (Not that that's an issue tbh)

Anyways, completely ignoring the cosmetic wings themselves, does the race or flight ability need tweaking at all mechanically?
I'm kinda tempted to partially remove the back slot restriction, but I'd want to limit it to satchels only. Backpacks don't look that good with wings.

there were some good ideas with flies getting wings but they just shred apart

like really throw a knife at them and their dismemberment is so high they just decap instantly

Can't do that without a major rework of how wings are handled. Hell, I'd have to basically add a new limb to humans for that.
Currently the wings themselves are 100% cosmetic essentially. All the flying code is stored in the angel species. There was a suggestion to move all the code into an organ actually, which would allow wing transplants but that would take a bit since I'd need more sprites.
