Volcano Mining/Away Mission Sprites

So since kor's working on overhauling away missions and merging it with mining, we've agreed that this should all take place planetside. In order to keep things properly hostile (but allow some interesting surface structures to exist) we've settled on a volcano world theme. Think char from starcraft, but for 2d spessmen.

I'm going to go ahead and say that I will likely never be able to do this all by myself. The sheer amount of shit we have on the station makes any attempt at getting close to that by myself basically impossible. There's an absolute metric ton of stuff I have to make, even if only in the scenery department. Actual functioning lava, heat, and atmosphere related machines are a whole other mess that I'd like you guys to help contribute to.

To give you a sense of what this lava world looks like, I've gone ahead and sprited some basic parts and assembled them. Note that this will not reflect how it looks, as it's missing many effects:

I plan on adding large destructible rocks like those little jagged ones on the ground you see (but that actually obstruct movement and maybe vision) as well as fissures, a constant ember/ash snowfall effect, maybe even lightning effects with the screen flashing. Finally, I also need to add various hostile lifeforms since the sprites we have for the asteroid monsters just don't fit here and are frankly too poorly sprited to consider using.

Also note that the lighting will not be as bright as in this picture. Lava is animated and will provide a natural source of light, but otherwise the world will be fairly gloomy (though not pitch black).

I'm also hoping to get help in the sound department. Let's hope cuboos feels up to the task. If he doesn't want to, then I can only hope we can either find some really good generic sounds on the internet or have someone else who knows how to do sound editing volunteer.

Here's a general list of stuff I probably need help with:

-Lava or zerglike aliens
-More variations for the floor (keep the same base floor sprite, but just put stuff on top)
-Basalt walls (like our diamond/sandstone/plasma walls) except having it work with the new wall smoothing in mind (look at what happens to the current mineral walls).
-Rock formations, big enough to block movement (try to keep these to 32x32 pixels), possibly fissures with no lava in them.
-Possibly lava immune hardsuits or equipment?
-More creative lava effects (bursting bubbles?), I only made it glow brighter/darker
-Maybe new mineable basalt wall sprites, I'm not fond of the current ones. I'd love some cave formations.
-Speaking of that, if the above is done, cave objects/formations like stalagmites.

This doesn't have to just be limited to sprites, by the way. I'm also in need of well thought out structure layouts and backstories for the people who are still there (migrants). It would help me a lot if you could draw the layout, too. Try vary the entrance direction, too, so we don't always enter from the bottom or top or whatever.

Don't worry about actually mapping these things though (unless you really really want to contribute to that when the time comes), I can handle all of that easily enough if I'm simply given the layout.

I can tell you the structures/story I'm thinking of for the planet but I'm torn between telling everyone so they can help and wanting to keep it a secret for just a bit longer. I should probably make another design thread or whatever soon.

I'm assuming the lighter gray parts is a wall, it looks almost like it'd be just a lighter rock, like in pokemon with the grass.

Yeah they're walls. I had to make it a lot brighter so you can actually see it against the ground. If this were a 3D game I'd use all the same colors there, but here we are.

Idea: Being able to build a space elevator to the station... or perhaps a mass relay out of a mountain...

Chasms! These function similar to lava in that they kill you if you fall into them or are thrown into them, but don't emit light or heat. It's possible that these will function as new cavern entrances in the future, if you have the method of safely descending into them. And don't worry about these being complete instakills, you won't fall into them just for trying to walk in their tile, it may act more like dragging yourself onto a table, or being tabled/thrown in by someone else with an aggressive grab. Same goes for lava, although that may kill you just from the heat.

Come on guys, I really do need help here with sprites. We're having very big discussions quite frequently in IRC on the list of things we need.

To expand upon my earlier list, I'll also need the following:

-Metal Handrails
-Black & orange heatproof mining hardsuits. Mainly black with some spots or stripes of orange (to avoid it being confused with mostly red nuke op suits).
-Deployable Lifesaver Shelter™ and its deployment object (maybe a capsule or something like from DBZ?) for use in ash storms. (I will do the actual ash storms)
-Ash storm staff artifact
-New vault tiles and walls for adventuring content
-Traps, like gargoyle faces that shoot fire out or something, floor spikes, and equivalent floor tile parts for lava/chasm
-Any other temple stuff you can think of

This is all scratching the surface of what will be done with this planetside stuff. We're crazy lacking in content to work with here, and it's why I'm begging you guys for help.

I just used normal walls/floors for the shelter and a blue pill as the icon, don't need anything fancy for that right now.

Should be possible. I dunno if I want to make jetpacks even more overpowered/let you just skip everything with one though.

Imagine Tsar's space murderspree except now he's flying over a pool of lava and pulling people into it.

I see nothing wrong with that. You can already space people and basically get rid of their body forever just by dragging them through an airlock, the jetpack just makes it easier for you to get back in.

A constantly changing and hostile enviroment would be a interesting feature.

It might even be a good reward for progressing up a mining tech tree, getting better gear may allow you to survive these events.

If we got nests could we have them defended by bigger, stronger variants of the creatures?

An admin ran a small event with slightly bigger Goliaths and one massive Goliath named Kerkoro, it was just an enlarged version of the current sprite with more tentacles added to its attack so it shot tentacles in waves.

Well I just completed the ash storm sprites, so we've got a good chunk of the environmental stuff done. There's still stuff like large jagged boulders, perhaps some giant skeletal remains, and of course nests before the absolute minimum number of sprites is reached.

We're not done yet here, folks. I'd like it if someone would help with our lists here.

Is there some kind of guide for getting in to spriting? I am not terribly artistic but i have had lots of practice touching up and making pictures pixel by pixel in MS paint so i feel like i might not be awful at it and would like to help

Also, could you make it so lava connects with mining walls, regular walls, plating, and floor? Maybe do the same with chasms, minus the wall connections? It'd look a lot better and let us have stuff like bridges over lava.

This is still going by the way. I've gotten back into the swing of things and sprited guard rails, fences, an ash storm warning announcement for those TVs you see on the bridge and in the bar, a shelter capsule, and a staff of storms. I'll be doing landing beacons and floodlights tomorrow. Then I dunno I might tackle temple stuff.
