Post by Skorvold » #282

Does anyone use a specific program for spriting other than Byond's spriting program?

Aseprite's not bad. I use photoshop though and it does what I want it to do.

I use Paint.NET, you can get it here. Simple, intuitive, and has some nice features.

Mostly Dream Maker because I can't be bothered to open anything else to edit with.
Sometimes I use GIMP for more fiddly things or batches of small changes to automate.

I use Gimp and suggest it over anything else.

I'm either using Gimp or Photoshop and I don't like photoshop.

Dammit, laptop died (BSOD) and lost a gigantic detailed post i was going to make.
Might as well summarize it.

Aseprite is an old-school tool.
It gives you the right atmosphere, but it's a pain in the ass.
If you're going to use an ancient relic, use this one.

MSPaint is crap.
There's basically zero reason to use it.

Paint.net is better than MSPaint.
That's pretty much it.
No reason to use this either, unless Aseprite/GIMP/PS scare you.

GIMP/PS are actual modern image editing programs.
Yes, technology has advanced in the last 20 years.
Just because you're doing a 1995 job doesn't mean you have to use 1995 tools.
Do yourself a favor and use one of these for advanced work.
GIMP is free. PS is ridiculously expensive, let's just say i don't know anyone who's bought it.
They both do pretty much the same things.
I use GIMP, because I like it and i'm used to it.

DreamMaker
Use this for simple stuff. Ancient and buggy and annoying, but it works.
No point starting up gimp/ps and bothering with export/import unless you need to.

I use graphicsgale only beacuse of the simple right click to take the color your mouse is over and left to click to place it. I can't live without that.
