FPS setting debate thread
ITT we discuss the optimal FPS setting and why the best setting is zero because the others reduce your reaction time.
I actually want to find a good setting that's not zero. pls suggest.

Pulling 200 frames is pointless if you're still using a 60hz monitor.Qbopper wrote:higher the better fight me

Re: FPS setting debate thread
Have you ever played a game like CS:GO with a much higher framerate than your monitorSaegrimr wrote:Pulling 200 frames is pointless if you're still using a 60hz monitor.Qbopper wrote:higher the better fight me
Obviously the effect is nowhere near as signficiant as 30 >60 on a 60hz monitor, but higher framerates absolutely feel more responsive
That being said SS13 doesn't really have a framerate like that so I wouldn't expect it here, but the "fps doesn't matter beyond your monitor cap" is a myth - it doesn't matter as much as FPS under your cap, and there's a point where it stops mattering, but it still feels nicer to play 200fps/60hz than 60fps/60hz

Re: FPS setting debate thread
I do use 0 in ss13 mainly because I didn't know the setting existed until recently

Re: FPS setting debate thread
The max is 1000 because internally byond tracks time in milliseconds.
That being said, the best is a number that evenly factors with both 1000fps and the server tick rate (20fps)
40fps or 100fps are the best candidates, anything else creates partial frames that get out of sync with either the server's tick rate or byond's internal time tracking

We have an objectively best answer now, thread is over
Someone should set the fps setting to 1 and try playing

It looks like the sort of teleporting the statue mob does.Qbopper wrote:We have an objectively best answer now, thread is over

After playing on 0 for so long, 40 feels and looks sluggish. Mobs just kinda slide around in strange ways instead of moving directly from tile to tile.

Re: FPS setting debate thread
wait, i might be misunderstanding this, but QBopper afaik the reason CSGO is better on higher FPS even if you monitor doesn't support it is because the game's input and movement granularity are tied to FPS. The actual video onscreen isn't actually smoother it can just calc movement and take input more precisely. I wouldn't think that would apply in spess because afaik spess still does everything at 20 fps, the fps you set only affects animations.
also QBopper, not every game has input and stuff tied to framerate. On some games it legitimately makes no difference if your FPS is above your refresh rate. I think source games pretty much all experience what you talked about though.

Re: FPS setting debate thread
I'm well aware of game logic being tied to frames and how the setting in SS13 doesn't apply in what I was talking about please stop capitalizing the B

Re: FPS setting debate thread
Part of that has to do with the fact that byond doesn't properly skip frames on mob glides like it does on other animations if it can't render it fast enough.cedarbridge wrote:It looks like the sort of teleporting the statue mob does.Qbopper wrote:We have an objectively best answer now, thread is over
