New player feedback
Yo. after playing a few rounds, and practicing a bit on a locally ran server to get a hold of the controls, I thought I'd give some feedback from the perspective of someone new to spess.
First of all, the admins that I've talked to have been very helpful, and the ghost chat people that I shot questions were glad to give advice. Ghost chat saltiness and banter is great, only sometimes do you get the person sperging out about 'winning' the game. But hey, that's how some people want to play, so that's fine. Biggest hurdle so far was getting a hang of some of the more nuanced controls and interactions, such as intents influencing context sensitive actions (it took me a while to figure out how to grab aggressively, and how to pour something out using harm intent for instance). Hands system hasn't been too hard to pick up, other than remembering how to manipulate containers without braining yourself with them. Quickly learning and practicing hotkeys helped immensely.
Metastation was easy to get bearings of quickly, due to signs at intersections. Box took a bit longer, but it's a smaller map so it'll probably become second nature to navigate eventually. Haven't played delta yet.
I've pretty much been killed in some hilarious fashion by every antagonist that I've come across, as some of the more meta-game ways of dealing with threats wasn't so readily apparent, but were expected to have been known by most everyone watching, but hey that just comes with experience and playing, I don't mind. Some sort of quick primer explaining some tips on how to deal with situations like blobs/hull breaches (where to get a space suit for instance) might be a good thing to add to the new player part of the wiki. I don't mind looking into it more myself and reading up on it, but I don't know if other new players would want to get that involved in flipping through all the wiki pages.
All in all, it's been fun getting into wacky space hi jinks and enabling people's projects that usually end up in explosions or acid related death. Civilian jobs have been great for learning the ropes, and it's fun to learn from people that are more experienced and willing to share what they're doing.

Oh, and the only thing that's been off-putting so far has been some people raging and taking the shit out of people that they converted to their antagonist side, that didn't perform up to their expectations. While I don't really let the bants effect me, I know what probably sucks even worse for the person that failed the person that they were trying to help, and is a lot of pressure. But hey, you gotta learn somehow.

Re: New player feedback
My first round consisted of asking the HoP for an assistant position somewhere I wouldn't blow the entire station up, and went over to botany to grow some food for the chef. The botanist there taught me the basics, and grew a bunch of stuff that looked like eldritch abominations while happily chatting with me. Later on in the round after they left, some security came by and informed me that my mentor was imprisoned, presumable because they were using what they grew to some nefarious means. I shrugged, it happens. Went back to growing wheat badly, then tried to get on the shuttle when it arrived. Found a whole bunch of not-air in the hallway, and slipped into space, fumbling to try and get my internals on, which I probably should have done in advance. Then the shuttle exploded, so maybe it was a good thing I didn't make it on there.Saegrimr wrote:This is a good thread, its nice to see people enjoying the game for the first time.

Re: New player feedback
this is a thing that happens in games in general and it's a shame 'cause I see new players get genuinely disheartened and quit, like the learning curve is vertical enough as it isFloiven wrote:Oh, and the only thing that's been off-putting so far has been some people raging and taking the shit out of people that they converted to their antagonist side, that didn't perform up to their expectations. This thread is kinda adorable haha. It's always nice to see new people learning the game.

OP, if you have any questions about the game and you can't find anything on the wiki make sure to go to the Admin tab in the top right and click on Adminhelp to send the admins online a PM, we'll be able to help you out with whatever you need to know

Re: New player feedback
Yay new player! Smart too! The test server has saved my bacon from learning the more dangerous systems. Also, if you have the heart for it, going to the git repo and searching keywords in the code can help you understand the logic or thought process behind some of the functions of the game.

Re: New player feedback
I've only messed around with the civilian jobs so far on the live servers, they've been pretty simple to pick up as a lot of what they entail deals with interacting with the crew, rather than navigating the in-game systems. Not too bad once you've practiced picking up and putting down stuff. Took me a few pizzas to figure out that to make a specialty pizza, you needed to use the crafting menu, but I think I just overlooked that on the wiki page. The only thing that I've found unintuitive so far were more meta-gamey aspects, like knowing where to go to get certain gear to combat certain threats/survive etc. But those will come with experience, and gettin' gud, so I don't mind.TribeOfBeavers wrote: Which jobs (that you've tried) were easiest/hardest to pick up?

All of the wiki pages have been well done so far, maybe adding some interactions with how intents affect certain objects would be good to have a quick reference of. Some of the maps and locations of things found in them are a little out of date, but I realize that they get updated fairly regularly, so it'd be an ongoing project to keep all that information up to date.
I have transcended bitterness after exposing myself to mmo and moba communities for years. When it comes down to it, vidya gaems are about having fun, and I get a lot of enjoyment out of enabling others creativity. Nothing against power gamers though, that's just another way of getting enjoyment out of the game, though I wish people would keep in mind when venting that they're affecting another person as well. 'Course I'm not advocating for a hugbox, but there's a sweetspot where people don't take themselves too seriously and laugh at themselves and the bants are good-natured.Limey wrote:people who aren't bitter, sarcastic or ironic are a rare commodity these days and I appreciate this thread for its value

It is. Please feel free to make any corrections as you come across them. Re: New player feedback
I'm not very much of a new player, but I definitely have not played enough to get a hang of the game, and I just got back from quite a long break. Still got a lot to get a hang of, and I haven't really done more than civilian or service jobs considering how unrobust I am :y
I hope y'all stick around Floiven, good to have new players.

Re: New player feedback
I'm also very new to /tg/ and SS13 (been playing for maybe a week now?), and I'm honestly hooked. Whenever I've had issues (like when I couldn't find out how to get to the mining area), the admins were always very quick to give me directions. I still got lost, of course - but I usually have multiple tabs of the wiki (which is very well-written and really useful) open to consult whenever I'm having trouble. Mostly sticking to science jobs like Medical Doctor/Chemist/Geneticist, but I'd like to branch out more.
The first time I played, I picked Janitor and someone beat the shit out of me for not using Space Cleaner after he kept slipping. I did put down wet floor signs, but that guy didn't care. I couldn't remember where the janitor's closet was either, so I was in a muddle for most of that round, lmao.

Make sure to note which parts of the wiki need to be improved in the wiki forums! I try to keep it updated, when i can, and knowing what to focus on is very useful.
