UnityStation > Space Station 14
I tried these for the first time last night and although both do interesting things the other and /tg/station don't I have to say that based on their current states at least I'd prefer to UnityStation to be the BYOND killer.

What I wrote here was dumb so suffice to say I think Unity just had more features and did a better job of recreating the game.

Looks like ss14 is trying to both be a recreation of ss13 as well as editing some of the gameplay loops while unity looks like more of a strict recreation of the game, at least from the ss you provided

SS14 has much higher potential but is much harder to dev for and consequentially doesn't progress quite as fancily

It's hard to know if I should actually spend time on a legitimate reply to this thread since it's cacogen and somehow in the general forums but eh.
(Disclaimer that I am very much involved with the development/testing/admin/general shilling of SS14 and am absolutely biased towards it. However i'll be as objective as I can here.)
Going down this comparison list you made, i'll point out that SS14 servers aren't there to play seriously on yet. They are up for testing which is why they're empty most of the time. We usually do playtesting on weekends since we've implemented gamemodes like Traitor, TTT and TraitorDM, but otherwise they're empty.

Seeing as the servers you logged into had no power/gravity they were probably laggy because when we're not testing they default to sandbox mode and anyone can come on and spawn a bunch of stuff and generally fuck them up. The other things you mentioned appear to be design-wise and I don't really have much to say about them other than a lot of stuff is placeholder/our personal choices.

I made this because I sincerely wanted to talk about the future of SS13 and then someone asked me to give examples of why I thought UnityStation was the better of the two, which inadvertently made it about the validity of my opinions some of which were not entirely sincere. I'm bad at making threads.
Some of the stuff I mentioned can be put down to it being in early development, others where you're just reinventing the wheel in a worse way than the precedent already made by the BYOND codebases. I do trust though that you will not take my opinions on board and dismiss them out of hand because you don't like hearing them. Which is easier for me, actually. Though I do think about Neil Druckmann and that playtester on The Last of Us 2 who reacted strongly to Abby killing Joel (great game, by the way). Obviously it's early days and I'm glad there's at least two projects in active development for standalone SS13. But if yours wins while continuing to do things differently in a Canadian or The Last Jedi kind of way then eh, I'm glad we will escape BYOND.

Yeah, I think ss14 has generally been faring in a better state compared to Unity lately. I'm not sure if either will really catch on though... BYOND's greatest asset is ease of development, so any random person can add stuff. Unity and SS14, though they realize this, still have a lot more of a learning curve to contribute for.

The useful thing about ss14 is they're not trying to copy us beat for beat, since well, a lot of our music is flat.
Also means they have a hope in hell of having a feasible project without mass exodus from byond, since they're not trying to remake in the same way as unity (was the last time I checked a year ago)

Just tried the Playtest for SS14 and I am surprised at how playable it is already. They need to clean up the UI and controls a bit though. The pixel movement is a massive improvement for the game and it is immediately how much more usable it is as a basis for the game.

ive not tried unitystation but ss14 is pretty rad, i dont think its reached Critical Mass just yet but people are doing stuff and they reliably get a non-zero amount of players so thats looking good!

Something interesting about Space Station 14 is that it's engine, Robust Toolbox is being used for an open-source rewrite of Byond called OpenDream - https://github.com/wixoaGit/OpenDream.
In practice this means that you'd be able to join SS13 servers using OpenDream through the Space Station 14 launcher without any changes on the SS13 codebases end.
These are early dev screenshots but it's in a pretty good state and i'm excited for it.

Unity, which also uses C# makes this trivial through using scriptable objects. I was on SS14 the other day (somebody recognised me in OOC, I’ve achieved 2014-Goofball levels of infamy) and it was kind of cool until you realise how little you can do in it, it has less content than /tg/ started with

I think SS14 is now pretty much leaving unity station completely behind. The rate at which they implement features also seems much faster now.
