DIscuss. I feel Discord just makes it too damn easy to metagame if you're smart about it. Also it enables cliques and sekrit clubs 1000% more than anything else.

Not really, the funny thing about metagaming is that the more you're affecting the game with it, the more exponentially obvious it is you're doing it. The better you are at hiding it, the less it actually affects anything.

Admins have a keen eye for it now. We don't talk about it much because the more you know about how to avoid it, the less they'll do dumb shit that gets them caught.

I wouldn't worry about it, just ahelp suspicious shit. It's a rare thing, and if it's happening, it's so subtle it's probably not impacting anything.

sense of community has certainly taken a dive, but that's not to say it's no longer present. discord is vastly more temporal than the forums (save for NTR hut) so people cannot often build up a presence out of game, and imo being able to just change your discord nickname to "cock shitter 69" or whatever the meme of the week is and making it so that nobody can identify you unless theyve autistically put a note on you compounds that severely

i dont think it affects metagaming much, before discord it was skype

Metacomming was always easy if you were half clever about it. The thing is, it makes the game LESS fun to the people doing it. This has always been the main incentive against metacomming, and why people who do it are usually shitters trying to coordinate mass shitting rather than anything useful.

PK speaks the truth. It's not just SS13 either. A lot of Discord communities are relatively impenetrable compared to internet forums.

It's not so bad, if anything it just amplifies some of the issues we have within the community with ease of access and another dimension for groups to attention whore and bully each other. Mostly it works as intended and you can see people happily talking about their latest rounds in tgstation-general while all the memesters hang out in discussion-general. Cliques were always a thing and as much as we might hate it discord is a pandora's box we can't close. People are naturally gonna make their own like-minded communities to chill and talk shit in and the best you can do is maybe check in on some of them to make sure they aren't outright metacomming once in a while.

Toxicity, meta-cliques, bullying, attention whores and degenerates? They always existed. Now they have a better megaphone to spread their filth. Only advise I can give is to be the change you want to see and try to spread a bit of positivity. I don't think discord ruined ss13 though, a lot of that smacks of old burn outs shouting at kids on their lawn.

The difference between discord and Skype wrt metacoms is that every player is active on discords that connect them to other players. Nobody was in a 3k users big /tg/station Skype group that allowed them to find connections to metacom with

It makes forming a metacom group as easy as a button press.

I feel like half the people spouting the S word in this thread hasn't taken even like 2 seconds to think that if discord is truly no different then Skype then why did discord blow away 7 years of Skype's market share in 7 months?

People were pretty fed up with microsoft's garbage changes. Discord has only become more and more about communities as time has gone on, but even back then it completely thumped skype. Also while you're correct about the size of groups I am ashamed to say I was part of a lot of massive skype groups so...I didn't really think about that in the equation.

Discord is easier to metacom with but if someone wants to metacom at no point in /tg/'s history has it been actually difficult for them to do so, and since most metacom "groups" are actually like brothers talking while they play or two friends not these boogeymen groups, i doubt discord has had very much effect on the amount of metacommers.

And I wanted to say that part about what metacom groups /really/ are because I joined ss13 with a group of my friends all joining cargo and metacomming insanely hard. Realistically, close nit casual players will not be joining our massive discord communities and recruiting... or something like that. They're just going to log in with their pals.

Skype was already in its death throes there just wasn't any alternative. Most people I knew were definitely in the stage of being very irritated with how poorly skype worked and how every major update just seemed to make it even worse.

Discord obliterated skype because Discord was free, worked well, and you could invite people to it by sending them a link. They could fully use it from said link without even making an account.
There's been something to be said of Discord slowly getting worse as well but it's not really to the same degree as skype ever was. Stability is lower because the service is more extensively used, lots of features nobody cares about, but it isn't at all in the realm of "barely functional" or stuffing ads down your throat. It still works better than I can knock it for for being free.
