I started dating someone a few months before I started playing this. We have since then got married, bought a house, and are currently expecting our first child in March.

TL;DR Atmos

In this post I generalize ss13's community and not just this server.

Admins more merciful, but in rare circumstances, still use powers to bully others instead of just enforcing the rules. Case and point all of the highest ranking administration on this server. Keep in mind that's the only negative side, but they would with all their power and advantage be unable to tolerate me. Imagine real life, lol.

Actually that's the only reason I'm probably still here is that this is the only server that hasn't banned me permanently which is weird because when I roleplayed on other games everywhere else in every other community including ones with higher learning curves than this community, I've pretty much only got banned for arrogance and not for breaking the rules, which arrogance bans are very rare everywhere else. Keep in mind there is no gamification of incentives to play here in this game. I don't even play it to get the last laugh or make up for how I have more losses than wins in every dispute, pretty much never been on the winning side of a report I myself made which is odd because I've held administrative positions in other games. I'm honestly non-ironically mostly interested in the game mechanics more than the roleplay.

The only thing I always do when I play here if I play at all, which I haven't in a while because these current headmins have boomer vibes to them, is atmos, circuits, and play unlisted music sheets in the bar. I remember I had chemistry memorized and they updated it so I memorized the new chemistry and they added PH and so I mastered that and they just kept changing stuff, but the hardest stuff to change normally gets easier instead of obfuscated I've noticed, as if the coders are just coding around their own limitations which shamefully doesn't really seem too impressive. I should probably not even be here because the byond community doesn't really have valuable members I feel and the game isn't even really as addicting as it once was thanks to its social deduction features being over saturated now with comical randomness. There was a server that literally had an admin abuse power just to win a nuke ops round and brag about it; The bragging part was a huge red flag. I didn't think anything about it because I don't sit here checking peoples shoes(this is called an idiom). Next thing you know I get offered admin and turn it down to be banned two weeks later by admin abuse on that server. Admin is supposed to be a high responsibility task, but nobody cares because it's "just a game" when the human behavioral patterns portrayed by the players are real and so is their psychology. I would argue maybe two or three players actually roleplay beyond just following the rules and more so just play the social game. This place isn't inclusive, even sometimes shutting the server down to newer members.

I feel that the people running this place have always received the short end of the stick in real life and take their anger out on everyone they can online. I used to be that way back when I would use privilege elevation strategies to get higher up. One day my best friend(yes I said best because they always come through) told me I was doing all of this just to feel better about my struggles in real life. The issue is that I was very introverted about things and the attention I was getting sadly rubbed off on others. Other people who've never had to struggle merely adopt the personality, but aren't genuine. Most of the staff here are like that I'm pretty sure, seeing how accountability isn't a virtue as much as it is just a tool here. Other people who kissed the rear ends of admins and later got mercilessly banned for walking on eggshells too fast are always captivating to witness when they suddenly change tone and start spamming the digg or other ss13 outlets(you never see this behavior in any forum on any ss13 community because it's banned exclusively here). Lots of them move on to other communities without the toxicity, normally ports of the game outside the byond engine. Some of their stories are MUCH easier to find now thanks to bingchat and had been obfuscated before.

All in all, this game needs a solid remake/port and the way that the community interacts needs to be refined so that there are limits to how much someone in a position potentially capable of manipulating the culture of the community might have. There was a time the entire ss13 community was openly racist and suddenly one year it just all disappeared and was bannable. I don't know how that came about, but it certainly didn't completely vanish. Some people don't even see this as anything insidious, but instead just part and parcel. People in charge are overzealous.

This happened because I simply asked the admins if there was a public place to review previous bans. I didn't explicitly break their rules, not even joking. The reasoning behind the ban was "you're a karen".

i started playing this dumbass game cus i used to lurk in the dwarf fortress irc channel back in the mid 2000s and it was a really good place to hear about super niche autistic games to play. a conversation started about cantr II (a shitty browser mmo but it was novel back then) then someone responded with a very adult post-apocalyptic MUD (if you know you know, i don't wanna invoke its name because it might bring a curse upon our houses) and then someone said they were goofing around with byond games and mentioned ss13, then dropped an IP in the chat and told us to join.

i was like 14 at this point so i threw caution to the wind and installed byond and we had a round with about 9 people, which felt huge. this was 2007. there was no wiki, there were no servers on the hub, maybe like 30 people in total knew about the game. i immediately found it very interesting and brought it to my dnd group. we started voting each weekend on whether we wanted to play dnd or play a round of ss13. most of the time ss13 won, it was wild. when 10 people would turn up we were like "damn this is so many players this rules" and never in our infantile minds did we ever imagine it would get to where it is today. the whole game was once a mystery, because all of the mechanics were undocumented. we didn't know how to start the engine or heal people, and had to learn through nothing but trial and error.

in the early 2010s to around 2013 i played on baystation before it became a milsim larp. then i goofed a lil on tg but never really became invested in the community. then i forgot about the game entirely for a good number of years until the pandemic hit, and someone linked that stupid dilbert3 song and it reminded me of the epic space game, so i returned. and now i'm trapped here forever.

i would say the main differences between now and the old days is just the organization of everything. communities hadn't found their footing yet and ss13 didn't really have an identity like it does now. there was no real culture. you just fucked around with the simulation and usually broke it. there weren't agreed upon metas or common expectations of jobs or roles, it was a lot more wishy washy in that sense. one huge difference that sticks out to me is that genetics used to be in the medbay and was more complicated than it is now. you also had to double click to pick items up and it was somehow laggier than it is in 2023.

the only thing i would say i miss from the old days is that people are very interested in efficiency now. there is no mystery anymore. if you don't know how to do every mechanic then you're a moron, and get shoved out of the way so it can be done by someone with 2000 hours in that job alone. back in the day it felt like everyone was way stupider. is that good or bad? who knows, but it made for very funny rounds. also, gamemodes. dynamic is cool and interesting but it has undoubtedly changed the game entirely.

edit: oh yeah and the brig had a chess set which honestly owned we need to bring back multiplayer chess

There is a chess set in the holodeck. I tried to play a single game on it and then we just went to play on another website.

Telescience.

Getting told off by an admin playing the 'Pug of Shame' for taking advantage of the fact that I was always a shitter to get away with stealing the captain's ID on lowpop while also being an antagonist.

Making the pug of shame laugh and thus getting off free.

Honestly I would say the old gameplay loop that brought me into this game is long dead. The entire appeal of the game was that as an antagonist you could abuse dual use systems on the station to increase your power and perform mischief on the station. This has been replaced by a system where antag power is either explicitely gated or where the effort to reward ratio has become so skewed that they are hardly worth the effort in most cases.

tg has changed so much during those 5 years, we're allowed to call ourselves older players. you pre-2017 guys are ancient fossils, go pay your bills or start a family or something idk
I started dating someone a few months before I started playing this. We have since then got married, bought a house, and are currently expecting our first child in March.

I started playing ss13 on goonstation back when they were using mushroom station. I liked it because it was silly and fun. I don't remember when I joined tgstation, but it was during the era of box, before Meta (and Delta; I don't remember which came first) got released. I liked tgstation because it was silly and fun. I've never been interested in murderboning, and these days I'm not signed up for antag at all. When I get it, I try to do things that I think are amusing and will limit round-ending stuff for people.

I left tg because Sybil had moved from something close to MRP to extremely LRP, and I eventually stopped playing because most servers were either extremely LRP or nauseatingly HRP. There was no room for silliness when rounds ended every 20 minutes.

Coming back a few weeks ago and seeing Manuel has been an unparalleled delight. It feels like it did when I first started playing again. Yes, sometimes I will brain senseless an idiot who keeps interrupting my surgeries, but after I fix the person I'm working on I'll make sure to fix the idiot. I've gotten mostly comfortable with medical again, and I'm really looking forward to relearning engineering.

tl;dr i'm older than most of you and tg is as good as it has ever been
