Do admins actually play? Buckle up.

Post by LiamLime » #179865

Annoyingly enough, yes, most of them do.

Unfortunately automatically getting an up-to-date list of admins is basically impossible, so I have to rely on the admin status each player had when they last logged in, meaning people like FatmanFive are still on the list - hands up if you remember him.

Still! Should be a useful tool to keep an eye on the admins and notice when some of them become inactive or when some start talking too grandiosely about the game they don't actually play anymore.

Do admins actually play the game?

(7 day period) (30 day period)
(Can take a bit of time to generate)

Caveats regarding the correctness of the time calculation are on the page itself.

PS: Yes, this was cleared with MSO

Wait does this check rounds played or what?

Couldn't these technically be time spent observing if they didn't actually play in the round?

This page doesn't answer the question of whether or not admins ACTUALLY PLAY...

I don't think there's any way to determine that from the available data. As the page states, the assumption for time played is that whenever someone connects into a round, they play until the end, which is not always the case, so the "played time" is a generous upper bound - meaning nobody on the list has played more than that, they may have however played less.

"Played" meaning that they were connected.

Hello paprka, since logging started in January 2013, you connected to TGStation 4458 times. Your first connection was on 2013-02-08 00:32:33 (1202 days ago). You probably played in about 2346 rounds, or somewhere in the ballpark of 155962 minutes, which is 2599.3 hours, or 108.3 full days, or 3.61 full months. In this time span, you've spent 9% of your time alive playing TGStation13! Looking up your IP on geobytes.com indicates that you live in United States. According to Wikipedia, the minimum hourly wage in this counry is $7.25. Had you spent this time working for minimum wage, you'd have been $18844.925 richer. Had you spent this time studying, you would have earned 103.9 ECTS credits, which is enough to pass 17.31 university level courses. This would have gotten you through 1.73 years of university.

When I was making SS13 "How Much Time Have I Wasted?", I briefly considered making a leaderboard - not one that showed the biggest time-wasters, instead one that showed your global position in both absolute number and percentage. While looking into it I checked what the numbers were. The top several people at the time had way past 10k connections each. The reason I didn't make the leaderboard is because it'd require a count of connections for all players, of which there are 35k now. That'd be way too much computation - at least probably.
DemonFiren wrote:>still no lizard options for passports
Were lizards really added after I had already made that? :S Wow.

Also if anyone wants to maintain this stuff and add images and such, just get in touch. While I haven't posted the source anywhere publicly, I have shared it with several people, all of whom took a look at it and noped the hell out of there :D So if you want to maintain the code on my server, this can be arranged. If you want to host it yourself, that's fine too, it's just that nobody I shared it with so far has decided to do that, so I don't know how likely that is. :D

Adding new images or icons isn't hard at all, you just add them to the corresponding folder. the tedious part is getting them out of the game. If you make a zip of the icons you'd like to add (in png format), I can easily do that, just make sure to make it obvious which folder they go into, plus name them so people will know what they are (e.g. detective_noir.png)

Folders:

You can show how often an admin has connected to the game but that doesn`t SHOW that they actually play the game.
Also, what about coders?

Paps, all this shows is that you played a lot when you started playing ss13 and stopped after a while.
Let`s be generous and say you played 3 rounds a day since you`ve started.
2346/3 = 782 days of ss13, and then you just stopped playing for ~2 years.
Of course this is wrong but you know, you may never know.

Quickly set the kpa output to 163 kpa and fill the tanks with the burn mix.

Take the oxygen tanks and fill it up with a 613kpa worth of oxygen FIRST then fill the rest with plasma, you should get well over 2000kpa in the end.

You can show how often an admin has connected to the game but that doesn`t SHOW that they actually play the game.
Also, what about coders?
It doesn't show when they do, it shows when they don't. Is it perfect? No. Is it useful... Let's just say some admins's number suddenly increased 5 fold in the last 2 days. Perhaps a better description would be "Which admins don't even bother to connect any more?" or something.

The thing is, this tool will remain online. Sure, admins will pad their values for a while, but soon both the players and the admins will forget this exists - or they will get tired of actually padding the number. This means the tool will reflect reality ever more and more as it becomes less of an active topic of discussion. When admin related issues arise in the future - when certain admins or coders assert their correctness and preach sermons from atop their gilded thrones, all the while claiming that they know all this from their in-game experience - well you can actually check. Does having a high number there prove that they play a lot? No. Does having a small number there prove that they don't? Yes.

Also I checked and getting the data for a 30 day period isn't much more time intensive than getting it for a 7 day period. I want to give the admins who have been slacking before this came out a bit more time to stop slacking (I don't like it when rules or methods get changed and the new ones get retroactively applied). For reference, the admin with the largest number of logged hours in a 30 day period has 243h 15m logged. So I guess I'll roll out the 30 day display 240 hours after the tool came out, so 10 - 3 days = in 7 days. The average seems to be around the 70ish hour mark per 30 days.

As promised, the 30 day display is now live:

(7 day period) (30 day period)
(Can take a bit of time to generate)

Is there a way to manually edit the admin list you have? The wiki list is pretty much always up to date (https://tgstation13.org/wiki/Administrators).
Whatever

I don't want to manually edit it. I'm simply not invested enough into this game to keep up with that anymore. Otherwise no, there is no list of anything, the list is created from data out of the database. I'd prefer that it is guaranteed to show all current admins, even if it also shows some of the old ones. I mean alternatively you could start using database based administration instead of the stupid txt file cloning hack... Then this list could be guaranteed to work properly...
