So I read about SS13 on TVTropes of all places, and get interested enough to download the latest BYOND client and give it a whirl. I've already gotten the feeling for this game and it's quite different with...an almost indescribable sort of chaotic element that makes it so darn addictive. Without further ado, my experiences thus far:
-On the very first playthrough, walk into the mass driver sans spacesuit or oxygen mask. *facepalm*
-Second playthrough on same server: actually manage to do my job a teeny bit before SYNIDCATE. Attack eventually foiled - but I had the bright idea to go try and scavenge the battle area to get my hands on something awesome. O2 deprival due to hull breaches, faint, get dragged by doctor to a cryotube. Thanks Doc, whoever you were.

-Try out a couple well-populated servers at random. Other players try to help, but it becomes painfully obvious that I don't know diddly.
-Decide to look for a low-populated server for some freaking practice.

-Join another server and get Cluwned by a wizard in under 60 seconds after leaving arrival shuttle.
-My response foiled as OOC is disabled and my wallpaper-peeling vocabulary all turns into honks.

-Start on another server and blunder into the pod bay. Grab one of the larger pods and race off at random.
-Run into a buzzsaw-nosed drone. Fly BACK to the station in flames with the drone hot on my tail.
-Drone gets in bay along with me.
-Pod explodes seconds after I drag my bleeding self out of it. Most of hangar bay is a writeoff.
-ooops.

Annnd my latest and greatest attempt on the Einstein server:
-Wander around wondering WTF; there's nothing here...vending machines and chairs behind reinforced glass.
-Notice computer on the Wall. Call a shuttle. Get ON the shuttle and wanted around for another few minutes. Realize OMGOODNESS, the shuttle has a computer!
-Push the one button on shuttle computer and go to space station. Arrive. Nobody around, hallways dark as !@#$, I'm confused.
-Start wandering halls - no other players, just a few 'bots. No map. Ambient sounds spooking me out IRL and my character is scared as hell IC. I grab a desk lamp in one hand as the first portable light source I see.
-Wander into the bar at random, see double-barreled shotgun behind bar. Grab crowbar, bust out reinforced window on one side of bar door. Go WTF at a blank bar recipe book, grab the gun and leave. Wander around more and get spooked by a floorbot coming around a corner.
-Find a tiny electrical/maintenance storage room at random. Swap desk lamp for a flashlight and put that in storage 2 to free up a hand. Station power gets shut down for abnormal activity; I wait in little room until it comes back on.
-Throw a half-dozen random tools in the box in my backpack in case I get locked in/out or whatever so I'll at least have half a prayer of saving myself.
-Head back the other way as I've reached the far end of the station. Notice library to south...empty bookcases. Grab universal recorder to make my own personal log. Grab paper from bin, grab paper from desk and write a note
"To whoever finds this: The station is empty. Half the halls are dark. The place has power problems. You are alone. Be careful."
-Wander back west until I come back to the shuttle. Go back east and north, see locked room with mining pickaxe. Decide to break window, dig through asteroid, dig through ANOTHER window to get in. A miner needs a pickaxe, right?
-Get horribly shocked, face starts melting, run back to medical wing but die halfway there. Ghost so I can find where the !@#$ I should go next time.

Well welcome to the strange world of SS13.
It's worth noting a few things, (mostly) every server runs a slightly different variation of the SS13 code, so not everything is universal, though more or less the basics are. I'd suggest reading this http://tgstation13.org/wiki/Starter_guide if you haven't already.
90% of people with fuck with you, 10% will help and also fuck with you, but that doesn't mean it won't be an enjoyable crazy space death fest.
Reading between the lines, I should point out that OOC is Out Of Character and should NEVER be used to talk about anything in game (unless the round is over).
Most place will issue a short temporary ban for any IC in OOC. So even if you frustrated because you can't talk in character, don't push that OOC button.
If you get really stuck or have questions over a rule etc press the AdminHelp button and mostly (unless they're busy with something else) they will answer your questions.

The way I've seen it, Basil/Artyom is lower population with more regulars and familiar faces. The better map I think too... then there' Sybil which I guess is the flagship server where the larger rounds take place. Take your pick, though I suspect just from what little I've gleaned from your behavior and posting patterns that you'd fit in more with the Basil/Artyom crowd.
