I haven't played any mainline Final Fantasy games since 7. Which one is good to start again with?

Doesn't really matter, the main numbered series all take place in different universes with different rules that only have a few parallels, such as Chocobos, the summons, and a mechanic named Cid (or in FF15, Cindy).Ikarrus wrote:I haven't played any mainline Final Fantasy games since 7. If you like theme park MMOs, 14 is a good one. I also often get recommended 10 and 11 when I ask the same question, but I haven't played either.

if you've come this far without realising 90% of FF games are unrelated there's something a little bit wrong.

Re: FF15 - Car push simulator
Good games are 7, 8, 9, 10-2.
Hard Core DIAMOND DOG GRIND is 11. Wasted my last two highschool years playing it. Only got 1 maxed gear character, a few mid range jobs but thats just about it; 14 i lost interest, when they include samurai I'll get into it.
Tactics and A2 is still the standard of turn based games of that caliber

I wonder if FFIX is being vindicated by history, or if being the last classical FF (as in medieval, with more comedy and less edginess) makes people nowadays appreciate more the return to the roots it tried to accomplish.

I wonder when Squaresoft decided that scenes like Steiner and Beatrix fighting back on back and trying to have a dying confession of love, or the whole relationship between Celes and Locke wasn't the way and pushed edginess, naming their protagonists as chuuni as possible, and always, always modern settings.

depends which 3 you mean.Wyzack wrote:Is FF3 gud? Was gonna emulate it
the 3 that is actually the 3rd is okay but 5 improved on the job system. I've only played it on the DS though, dunno what the NES version is like. Standard fantasy "kill the ancient evil" fare.
The one that got released 3rd in the US but is actually number 6 is basically a fan favourite, gold standard of SNES RPGs, leads to endless arguments between oldfags and newfags over whether the crazy genocidal terror-clown is the better villain compared to the goth ladyboy with the nine foot razor, and definitely worth playing.
On an emulator.
Seriously, the PC port that got released on steam is fugly as hell, what the fuck were they thinking with those sprites.

Re: FF15 - Car push simulator
I'm surprised people still care about this franchise.
Everything is good up through 7 then the whole series starts to tank hard.
9 is the last gasp of being good. One last shudder from the corpse before it all goes dark.
Play the Tactics games. The one on PSX (but the PSP/PSN translation of it) as well as Tactics Advance and Tactics A2.
Skip 11. I played it for way too long refusing to admit what a horrible piece of shit it was. We didn't know. We didn't know what MMO's were supposed to be or could be at the time, is my excuse. Hell skipping it may not even be an option at this point I think it's dead now anyway.
15 is actually alright for a little bit. Get it on sale and plan to play it for a month or two only.
If you've done all that shit shut the fuck up and go play Vagrant Story that game is fucking great and occurs within the same universe as the original Final Fantasy Tactics.
If you can find it play Crisis Core but good luck random licenses with Gakt expiring prevent them from selling copies anymore if you didn't already have it in some shape or form you fucked bruh.
Don't touch any of the Neu-metal Final Fantasy bullshit metrosexual fantasy games 8, 10, 13, etc.
12 is kinda cool because it takes place in the same universe as Tactics Advance and has some neat character/world/story stuff but the whole license board and gambit system of programming your party to do stuff fucking sucks what the hell were they thinking.

Re: FF15 - Car push simulator
Life continues I guess, now when you want some Jrpg that won't make you feel bad, you can tackle the legend of heroes or Shin Megami Tensei.
But I really don't understand Square-Enix, they know how to make good RPGs, Dragon Quest VIII was really good, and was after their fusion. They could give it a try, making a fantasy game, with medieval setting, more focused on comedy and high adventure than being edgy and melodramatic, you add a "Mwahaha" tier villain, one of those who burn villages and want to conquer or destroy the world simply because they can, you put dragons, turn based combat, like they used to have, and teammates more centered in being quirky than enabling wet dreams from the fangirls, so people remember them more as "this is the dumbass who actually shittalked to a dragon and tried to con it, because he thought it would be fun" rather than "this is the guy who goes half naked even in the middle of winter".
The issue with Crisis Core wasn't Gakt, but a legal battle between SE and the singer of the song you hear at the end of the game.

Re: FF15 - Car push simulator
10 was good but suffered from bad voice direction and the fact that you were supposed to not really like Tidus as he grew out of being a self important jackass. The issue is that they sorta stretched that part of the story out for a pretty long time before he gets his shit together and acts with any amount of humility.
10-2 was really good, like actually one of the highpoints of the entire series, but suffered from people thinking it was about popstar waifus rather than PTSD and trying to live life after pretty much everything you knew was a lie and everyone you really loved died. The opening where a fake Yuna was singing and dancing on stage was pretty on the nose theming for the entire game.
12 was also pretty good, but it suffered because it was this super serious plot about geopolitics and these two mature, levelheaded characters slated to be the leads with a super relatable relation to the entire plot were pushed to the side because they weren't hot, cute, or emo enough for tweens to relate to, so they made up this totally redundant character who had no connection to what was going on and forced him into the story to act as the main character. It also was pretty much the only final fantasy that seriously fucked with how battling worked and did it remotely well.
13 was when it really fell apart. Basically no one who was involved in any of the things people liked about final fantasy was on the leadership team anymore. Everyone was just some newbie who was working under them and it really shows that pretty much every person heading any aspect of the project was doing it for the first time. It was a total trainwreck.
The only reason 15 is 15, as it was originally some spinoff game, was because it had experienced people behind it and was very reminiscent of Kingdom Hearts in a lot of ways with how the protagonist moved and fought.
Crystal chronicles is the shit and they really screwed up why it was so charming with the remakes. The entire experience was a really light RPG based on simple and intuitive coop mechanics combined with the charm of growing the town, and literally every other game in the series totally ignores that aspect and is a generic action RPG.
Bravely Default is the shit. It is great and shows why they sorta need to take a step back and go back to the roots of the series rather than continually trying to be these weird pseudomovies rather than actual stories. Square Enix actually does pretty well on non-final fantasy mainline games, but has been mangling any series with a number in its name for a while. Last Remnant,

Re: FF15 - Car push simulator
it's defo got "spinoff that got pushed into main series" vibes all over it, it's pretty much an ARPG, plays a lot like dragon age inquisition without all the baggage of it being dragon age inquisition, or a streamlined/slicker witcher 3 type of combat though not as in depth as the witcher.
im playing it right now and its alright. i dont hate it, but i also didn't pay full price, so i dunno. i guess how much you like/hate it depends on how much youre looking to get an OG turn based JRPG type of game or what
