this game has the same boring combat as 100's of others, and attempts to mix it up with a bullet hell minigame that's equally as boring
games like earthbound and LISA make up for their similar boring combat systems with witty and idiosyncratic writing which makes you want to keep playing, which this game attempts but it falls flat
also it has puzzles for some godforsaken reason that are too simplistic to really be called puzzles but manage to be annoying anyway

so how do you like this

also full disclosure i only played until cowmom goes full domestic on you but i doubt it gets any better
by the point the quality of the writing and the nature of the gameplay have already been established

also cowmom was a pretty compelling and original character for a video game, it was sad to have to fight her :frownyface:

How can you complain about the writing when you have played literally 5 minutes of the game I mean come on.

I found the combat fun and adequately challenging especially in the later boss fights. The writing is
pretty good too in my opinion.

However I will say the puzzles are not good and don't really get better. They hardly factor into the game except for a small few parts. I mean I really didn't like Lisa because the combat system was obnoxious and just made experiencing the narrative harder since it was so boring and tedious.

Half an hour is all it takes to establish the quality of something's writing. Really, you can pretty much judge in the first 5 or 10 minutes of something how good someone's writing is. I'm happy it was up to your standard though.

I don't know how people find the same turn-based "ATTACK-ITEM-ABILITY-RUN" combat that's been around since at least the mid 90's fun anymore. Adding a little minigame to it like in this or in LISA doesn't really help either.

I felt the exact same way about LISA, actually. I also quit right after the first boss because I wasn't impressed by the game at all. I thought it was ugly, the music annoyed me and the writing felt like it was wasting my time. At the very least undertale's combat/befriending is unique enough to grab my interest, as opposed to LISA's generic turn-based RPG combat. I like undertale because everything about it, even the "combat" and the "puzzles" are all driven by and integrated into the story and characters quite well.

I don't think either of us gave these games a good enough chance. I know a lot of people say Undertale gets better as it goes on, and I'm pretty sure I'm missing out a lot after being turned off by LISA's tutorial area.

Because it's like the people who write off Deus Ex because Liberty Island was boring as shit.

So I guess I should ask you back why you would like LISA but not undertale.

This makes so much sense now. I remember hearing about MSPA and checking out some of the earlier stuff and thinking it was pretty interesting. Then I started reading Homestuck and it seemed like the same idea with more artistic polish behind it...

...but then it just hit a wall with the trolls and became fucking garbage with actual fucking WALLS OF TEXT and a ton of setup setup setup setup setup setup but never any actual fucking delivery.

The story was great but the gameplay was pretty boring. In my neutral playthrough the game felt challenging only a couple times.

Still, I love reading about the game and listening to the OST. There are also some great remixes out there, some of them linked here by Cedar. I can't be bothered going through the game again though to get to the other endings, skimming through the pacifist and genocide runs from Youtube was enough for me.
