Hardware scaling, blurriness, nearest neighbor, and sprites

Post by paprika » #33738

I didn't know where else to put this but this thread yielded some results before on the old forum.

Basically, the issue is, when you enable 'hardware graphics mode' in byond's settings and allow byond to use your GPU to display the graphics, stretching the image by using the '64x64' mode or the 'stretch to fit' mode, the game looks like a blurry fucking mess.

This is because some graphics cards simply scale sprites in this blurry fashion, instead of using nearest neighbor scaling which looks sharp and great.

Here are some examples:

There is a noticeable difference. Some of us deal with the eye-straining fucking mess that is blurry byond, but there's no way this isn't a bug and just hardware limitations.

In my case, all you have to do is right click or open one of the top program menus and the game suddenly becomes sharp, as evidenced by the first two screenshots. This is bizarre as fuck, but the game should ALWAYS look sharp like this. I don't know why byond (or ss13) defaults to being blurry like this, and I've tried every graphics option under the sun.

lol.
go report it on the byond forums or something?

I don't really get the point of this thread. I got this on my new laptop too but I used some NVIDIA settings to mess with the graphics settings for BYOND and it worked.

I have one of the new nvidia geforce 8xxM cards btw:
1. right-click on desktop
2. select nvidia option
3. get nvidia control panel
4. go to manage 3d settings
5. go to manage program settings tab
6. select dream SEEKER (not one of the other executables)
7. turn antriscopic filtering and anything that may seem related off until you get good results.

personally the non-blurry version destroys my eyes with its blocky oversharpness and the blurry version looks fine

I've tried everything. Please take a screenshot of your dreamseeker settings in nvidia control panel.

I just toggled between stretch screen and 64x64 and saw no noticeable change in quality.

Smoke effects don't look right in the blurry version, since somehow it can't see the alpha layer here when it can do it right everywhere else.
