I want to point out that as far as I've been able to tell, aside from Absence, HG has been consistently the same. I remember Erro being far more erratic.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I like consistency.

Most people got over it. Some haven't but are courteous about it. There are still a couple of vocal individuals though, who basically lack the ability to forgive and forget. Yes, mistakes were made on all sides. There are more than one wrongdoers in this - and there are some victims who were caught in the crossfire with minimal or no fault of their own (sorry bandit, jeb and others). It has however been two years, it's time to move on.

Just remember that in these threads you're getting just one side of the story, which is only really kept alive by those who feel personally offended by it.

Actually no, I didn't try to sabotage anything. What I tried to do was corrupt the results shown on the ingame polls display and see what happens. Did I do it for shits and giggles? Yes. Did I do it to sabotage the elections or you? No.

Here's what I believed before doing this. When I requested access to the database (many months before this election), I was given access to a copy of the database - a backup. I had limited rights (only had access to a few non-identifying pieces of data) and could only read data (could not add new data or modify/delete existing data). Makes sense, right? Many months later, not long before the election, I was doing some testing, I first realized that I actually had read access on the entire database (not just a few views), then realized I had access to data modification and then that I had access to data addition. Note: modification access to the backup, not the main database. Meaning I couldn't make any changes to the actual live database used by the game, only the backup, which is only used by ss13.eu.

When I realized I had more access than I thought, I fixed ingamepolls.php and other tools on ss13.eu, so that they started working again. Previously (when I only had access to a few views) I didn't have access to the data needed to make these tools work. So yeah, the tools started working again. I even created the "wasted time calculator" thing for the "How many hours have you wasted" thread. This should have made it obvious to anyone that I had some data access. Then elections roll around and I had the best idea ever. Make it seem as though J_Madison was winning. Once the database backup server runs its update, the fake data will be cleared from the backup anyway, so it'll just be a bit of fun.

I made a list of 40 or so players who have not logged in for at least a year. These are the players whose votes were going to be spoofed on the backup database. The reason for this is that some queries match up players from the player table with players from the cast votes table, meaning for votes to count, players need to actually exist in both - I couldn't just make up usernames, it wouldn't work. I did ensure I chose people who have not logged in for a long time - people who were very unlikely to actually vote. I also made sure to insert all the fake votes at once, meaning the timestamp of when the votes were cast were the same. And thirdly, if even that didn't make identifying the fake votes obvious to anyone who looked at the database, I set the voter's IP field to "Hi MSO <3". All votes with this IP were obviously fake and could be removed if something went wrong. I added the votes, looked at the ingamepolls.php thing, and giggled as J_Madison suddenly had a handful of votes more than Kor. I then went to bed.

The next day, I woke up to see a message from MSO, telling me that someone exploited my site to corrupt the election, that I had too many permissions and that I had an SQL injection exploit somewhere. I replied with something like: "What kind of hacker would set their ip to 'Hi MSO <3'?". He answered with 8chan or something, before slowly realizing that only the perpetrator could have known that bit: "It was you?!", he exclaimed. Indeed it was. Muhahahaha. At that point MSO informed me of a teeny tiny little detail which changed in the time between me getting access to the database backup and then, which he hadn't informed me of: The server no longer kept a database backup - what I had access to was the actual server database. I had full access to the ACTUAL SERVER DATABASE. What this meant was that the fake votes would not get overwritten when the backup was updated. Well shit. Ah well, at least I made it obvious which votes were fake, right? No, unfortunately by then, the entirety of the first election's votes have been deleted. The integrity of the first election could have been preserved, since all the fake votes were clearly marked and the players, whose fake votes were inserted, did not log in during the vote (meaning they wouldn't have voted). But alas, a re-vote was called and the previous vote's data deleted.

After this, the database backup was restored, my permissions were set properly again (albeit I now have more read access than just the few views from the very start - this is to ensure the various tools on ss13.eu continue to work). And all is good. Honestly it did become a little bit scary when I was informed that the database was in fact the one the server uses, but I prepared for this by clearly marking all the votes and ensuring the players I selected were unlikely to come to vote in the first place. Unfortunately the database administrators irreversibly deleted the entire content of the first election attempt, so nothing could be done to restore it. You really can't blame me for the database admins permanently deleting data though, that's their bad practice!

It was fun and didn't damage anyone. I can't really take all the heat for TGS administrators being too zealous in banning / disqualifying you though. Sounds a lot more as though they just took the opportunity to do that and that the actual reasons lie elsewhere. Now there's a conspiracy theory for you!

In terms of whether or not I could have faked the election though - yeah, totally. I had the access - which nobody knew I had (not least of all me). I know how the database works inside-out and it has really not changed much at all since I left it. There are checks in place to ensure administrators can't fake things, but when you're the database administrator, you have all the power. I could have faked a connection log entry, the player's "last seen" date and the entry for their vote, I could have also spread out the votes over period of time and made their IPs and computer IDs match the ones they actually used in the past. In terms of the data, I could have hidden it more or less completely. That wasn't my goal though, I wanted to have some fun, I didn't want to ruin this community by making it so it has J_Madison as headmin, I'm not THAT evil.

Why didn't I disclose that I had access? Well because some services on ss13.eu continue to provide value (feedback, ingamepolls, book club) and require this access. Most importantly though I didn't disclose it because I was led to believe I was working on a database backup, not the actual database - meaning me having edit access didn't actually matter in the slightest since any changes would not effect the game, and would be overwritten soon after they were made. I couldn't actually ~do~ anything with it except temporarily mess with the results presented on ss13.eu, which I can do anyway. - oh and because I honestly wanted to do a prank like this at some point and this was just the best opportunity.

I hope this at least clears up the events, and that this wasn't some foiled master plan against you - that I didn't twirl my moustache while petting a white cat in my swivel chair in the middle of my secret volcano lair. I think I actually annoyed oranges more than anyone else :3

Actually I made the decision to redo the vote because even if your votes were clearly marked, I had no way of knowing if anyone else could have managed to access the votes through the same vector and only manipulate the vote subtly.
