Is AMD any good?
I'm planning on an upgrade for Star citizen, Elite dangerous and other games.. Basically mobo and CPU upgrade.. I got ddr3 ram and 16 gigs of it and a decent nvidia card. I'm looking for cheep quad cores or more and I been looking over AMDs. They still got the issue of not working with Nvida cards? And are they still flunky as shit?
Last time I used an AMD set up it blew out and that was 7 years ago

Re: Is AMD any good?
Turns out that amd and intel are both overhyped shit (especially intel). Just get an off-brand one, but get a really sturdy motherboard so that it doesnt get fried.

Go intel or AMD it really doesn't matter. AMD do a range of cards (used to be ATI) that compliment their processors so look into that, if you want an AMD. Personally I've used both over a decade or so, I haven't seen any real quality difference, both have served me well.

Re: Is AMD any good?
FX 6300, FX 6350, FX 8320 are probably the best AMD CPUs for your buck. after you get out of that pricerange (i think the 8320 is $140) i'd start looking at the higher end i5s (4490, 4690K) and even i7s (4790k and 5820K but these are probably overkill). don't get an APU ever. i know you probably weren't even considering an APU but i thought i'd just mention it regardless.
they can work with nvidia cards but it depends on the manufacturer. i had a zotac nvidia card (GTX 660 i think?) and it was shit with an AMD CPU. store let me return it for the same card with a different manufacturer. got the same card from MSI and it was great.
full disclosure: i'm currently on a system with FX 6300 and a 7870 radeon card. still runs games that are coming out without any issue, but if i could do anything differently in retrospect i'd bump the 7870 up to a r9 270x.

Re: Is AMD any good?
I have an i7-4700QM 2.4GHz that can slow down to 1 GHz or boost up to 3 GHz depending on my power plan and resource usage and it's absolutely wonderful. Before that I had an i5 that ran at 2.4-2.7 GHz or something and I never had any issues with that either. Problems with video games always came from my GPU, which in my old laptop was a horrible piece of shit Mobility Radeon. My current laptop has a GeForce GT550M which is about the highest you can go in the 500 series without going with a GTX, and which can run new AAA titles at maximum graphics.
The processor in my first PC was an AMD Athlon with just 1 core that ran at 2.1 GHz, and it was probably the best CPU at its time.

on the arrival shuttle, I saw the iconic toolbox on the ground. I clubbed myself in the head with it trying to figure out the controls.

I've come a long ways from asking how to switch hands.

Re: Is AMD any good?
Just stop this is not a debate. I don't have the cash for Intel... maybe if i win the 150 Million lotto i would get an I7 hands down and build the most epic PC i could get. Right now I am poor as fuck wanting to get ready for low graphic setting play of Elite dangerous, star citizen, farcry 4, and so forth

Re: Is AMD any good?
Well, according to the Elite Dangerous site, the MINIMUM you need is 4 cores with 2 GHz, so an i5 with a decent speed should work.

AMD if you want 8 cores for some reason (MULTITHREADING IS A LIE), Intel if you want a driver.
The most excessive signature on /tg/station13.
Still not even at the limit after 8 fucking years.
The evil holoparasite user I can't believe its not DIO and his holoparasite I can't believe its not Skub have been defeated by the Spacedust Crusaders, but what has been taken from the station can never be returned.
