SS13 used to feel the gap, but it's starting to lose its appeal for this purpose.
I'm looking for something to keep in the background I can be marginally social in so I can focus on (trying to find) hobbies without the crushing feeling of loneliness distracting me.

Or join a social medium for internet friends rather than real life friends. Tumblr is actually really okay as long as you only follow blogs you actually care about.

What I have done is look at a few games that I frequent, I am a big PvP buff so games like Dayz, Arma3, fps like battlefield 4 ect. I found a Dayz community, I had aspired to make my own group on this server, never ended up happening but was gladly scooped up by another clan. They're fantastic, bunch of brits (I am american in germany on active military duty) that just love rambling as they play dayz, its fantastic.

The co-op action is more then I ever thought was possible, anyways talking with these guys on ts3 for me filled that social gap when needed, I myself am pretty introverted so not talking to people for days at a time doesn't bother me too much.

Go to your friendly-local-gaming-store and look for their event board. Find the "free board game night" or closest sounding thing. Attend it. Locate the friendliest looking group of people and ask if you can join their game. You can say something like "You guys look like you are having fun" as your reason for wanting to play with them, you don't need to make up some stupid story about how X game they are playing is your favorite. It can be that simple and honest.

Go play board games with random strangers. You will meet some fucking creepy weirdos. Some people may even think you're the creepy weirdo. In the end I promise you you will meet at least one other person you will think is not a complete horrible monster and maybe someone might mistakenly believe you two are friends.

Can you

1) Clean yourself up enough that you don't smell like a garbage bag full of vomit?
2) Sit in one spot for roughly an hour without pulling out your dick and screeching like a pterodactyl?

Have you considered taking up a sport? Maybe there was something you played in your early childhood you vaguely enjoyed but sort of gave up on? Don't limit yourself to kicking/hitting/throwing a ball around a field, either. There are many more borderline sports and sport-like activities - the point is that you can enter a social environment where you can socialise and potentially make friends.

Do something creative, and don't say you aren't or can't. Everyone has a talent, its finding it thats hard, but its perfectly possible.

Start whittling, or hulla-hopping, or get amazing with poi or guitar or painting or writing. Become a master of growing bonsai tree's, build a solar cooker, go land surfing (I don't know if the windspeed picks up at all out there, but a lot of space and flat land might go well). Anything that you use your mind or that you can work on refining a specific skill set. Or heck, read shit loads! If you can properly get lost in a book you'll find the time fly and you'll find inspiration in the words, theres always a genre or book type out there for someone. I used to read instruction manuals and how too books, then eventually picked up sci-fi books and or mystery novels, now I'm more into my comics (which you can get mail ordered anywhere these days) but still, try something new.

Also what nsos and invisty say, sports or any kind of physical activity is great for the mind. We (as humans) are designed to move and be active, we go a bit weird if we're still for too long.

If going out and meeting people isn't an option, MMOs and such are great at at least keeping you busy with others around you. Wurm, ARK, some sort of group survival thing. Stuff like that where you cooperate with others to build something helps keep you busy. Add voice comms for a bonus

But doing something creative or productive is generally also a great way to indirectly meet people and be busy. MMOs are just a thing that lets you pretend to be productive

you should find out what kind of music you vaguely like and then pick up an instrument and learn to play it

playing an instrument will expose you to more people (getting lessons, gear) give you a reason to connect with others (wanna jam? make a band?) and teach you something others might respect/you can be proud of. you can play out that loneliness, stress, whatever by thrashing on your kit.

if you're problem is being lonely, becoming a super specialist in one area of one thing is only going to make things even fucking worse. you'll have trouble relating to people who aren't as specialized as you and you'll be moving away from general areas of higher population towards lower concentrations of die-hard fans.

Use it. I've seen it used for things ranging from FLGS stuff to Smash Bros. meetups to cult meetings. I guarantee you'll find something.
