Eh, the Katana was more of a weapon they made with the limited resources they had. Its a fantastic weapon for slicing up the peasants, not so much against a armoured opponent let alone a Western Knight.

this is now a sword thread
and anyone saying that katanas could break through gun barrels are literally retarded

anyway uh i like the Ulfberht swords even if they are just mediocre damascus steel. They're western mediocre damascus steel! The chinese dao's they made in WW2 are fucking insane as well. It's basically old rail way tracks shaped into a daodao that would fucking massacre anything it touched. This sword could indeed cut off a mans head with ease in one swing. If we follow on that the Messer is also pretty damn good sword as well, once again it's a western version of the Daodao and it's small enough to use as a 1 handed weapon but if you want shit done take away the shield and pummel them. It was also one of the few weapons that had a school on it.

You have to get considerable weight for it to actually damage you significantly. You put more weight in a weapon the harder to swing. It's a high reward high risk scenario for blunt weapons. You swing down, you may hit, but if it's a skilled swordsman he'll sure as fuck move out of it. If you miss you've already over extended yourself and now you're just easy pickings. In sword fighting, just like fencing, it's about exploiting mistakes as much as possible.
This is the reason a hammer is on both extremes of the length spectrum, but not in the middle. You either get a Poleaxe which has a hammer on one side, or you get a warhammer which is light, sure, but it's fast and thus allows you to get a lot of hits quickly. Warhammers are pretty common in the 5v5s and 10v10s in BotN because of how quickly you can hit an opponent and it doesn't break bones per say but it knocks the wind outta you. I've had to fight one once and it's not something you want to go against. You have to keep your distance at all times else he will unload on you. I pretty much resorted to having to hug him like boxing to stop him from just mauling me. I was gasping for air by about his third parry, knock me off balance and then proceed to shit all over me.
Not fun.

Howdy, my name is Kenichi Smith.

I'm a 27 year old Japanese Toonaholic (Cartoon fan for you foreigners). I draw cartoons and comics on my tablet, and spend my days perfecting my art and playing superior American games. (Halo, Gears of War, Call of Duty)

I train with my 1911 every day, this superior weapon can shoot straight through steel because it kicks ass, and is vastly superior to any other weapon on earth. I earned my gun license two years ago, and I have been getting better every day.

I speak English fluently, both the Midwestern and the East Coast accents, and I write fluently as well. I know everything about American history and their Constitution, which I follow 100%

When I get my American visa, I am moving to New York to attend a prestigious High School to learn more about their magnificent culture. I hope I can become an animator for Nickelodeon or a game designer!

I own several cowboy outfits, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to America, so I can fit in easier. I keep cool to my elders and seniors and speak English as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond.

Wish me luck in America!

Piss off, Anime is as varied in quality and interest as western animation. It's not the fucking end all be all of entertainment.

Is there some that I do like? Certainly. I say pick up something on it's merits and how interesting it is to you alone rather than because "OMG JAPANESE".

Also, Katanas are shit. Well crafted, sure, but Japan had completely shit iron, lowering the quality of their metal weapons.

The society is paradoxically backwards and progressive culture that is in many ways, incomprehensible and alien, and slowly dying out because of both foreign influence and because much of their youth is too fucked in the head to make the proper interpersonal connections needed to start families.

I don't know where I'm going with this other than "I don't think Japan is as great as people do, but I'm not a hipster."

this really baffles me the obsession with japanese culture as well, the katana is romanticised for no real reason and I just like think "Why the fuck is that weapon romanticised but all the other much better looking and overall better swords completely forgotten?"

I really don't understand this and it annoys me because I want to scratch that I need to know why.

Anime is cool because the suits that import say its cool.
Don't you want to be cool and watch some generic ninja/gundam/fanservice animu with the rest of the gullible fucktards?

Unless atleast 3/4 of the protagonists are either:
A. Dead
B. Mind fucked
You're watching some generic baby tier shit made for Japanese children and American basement dwelling man-childs.
That's what separate anime from western cartoons, they weren't afraid to tackle adult topics like death and depression, and mind breaking and all the other bleak things about life.

Anime was cool in the 80s, 90s, and early 00s - then ADV films went under and the import market shifted focus towards mass marketing anime to young teenage weaboos

because you will be hard pressed to find a large amount of russian, western, or european cartoons with similar characteristics to anime. it's for the most part unique. there are some exceptions of course, but other countries just dont have a demand for that sort of stuff in high enough quantities for studios to make them, not to mention differences in culture.
the katana is romanticized because nobody actually knows fuck-all about it and from all the anime they've watched they think it can cut through diamonds
to be fair it does look pretty cool though

A wiser man than I once said that the Katana is the Desert Eagle of swords. It's very nice to look at - Almost iconic. As a weapon in general, it's shit - There's far better alternatives, but it's passable at what it was designed to do. As a status symbol, though? It's excellent.

guns > not guns
Confront them with annihilation, and they will then survive; plunge them into a deadly situation, and they will then live. When people fall into danger, they are then able to strive for victory.

Not surprising katanas became prop swords when every step of manufacture had a bloody specialist behind it so they were carting around the stupid hanzo steel between smelters, smiths, polishers and who knows what else at pre industrial speed. Made them very pretty but I can understand that making them too much of a luxury item to be used seriously.

Starting to reconsider contacting the Yamaguchi-gumi about a mutual beneficial deal on pistol parts. At least at this current place and time until traveling to Kobe. Best course of this approach would be during the college exchange program.
