A Philosophical Analysis of TC Trading for Revenant

The most common request for a TC Trade, by far, is swapping traitor or heretic for revenant. It is ubiquitous in its popularity and the persistence with which people ask for it. At first glance this seems unusual, why would you trade the freedom and narrative potential of an antagonist with dozens, sometimes hundreds of potential avenues for antagonistic behaviour, including deception, grand schemes, pure violence and griefing for a simplemob with a half dozen abilities, limited ability to interact with the round and an incredibly basic progression system. Is revenant thematically exciting? Is it mechanically engaging? Are the other options worse relative to the revenant? In this essay I will argue that the desire to trade antag rounds for revenant is the purest expression of a few problematic traits that have emerged over the last few years amongst the playerbase. The broader trend these traits feed into is the desire to maximize ones own enjoyment through maximizing the suffering of others, with the least potential risk to ones own enjoyment. In other words, the revenant is the purest expression of gaining joy from the misery of others, with the least potential for personal frustration.

Disclaimer: This is not a critique of the revenenant as an antagonist, it's a fine midround threat that I myself have enjoyed playing. The problem is it happens to coincide with some broader problems I think are worth discussing.

In almost all ways, the revenant functions as an observer disconnected from the round. It is by design meant to antagonize through frustration rather than outright kill, and it feeds on the remains of people who have already been removed from the round, while frustrating those that oppose it. The revenant has access to unlimited information, they benefit from their meta information and they have xray vision and unrestricted movement. They can observe at no risk to themselves. Lacking information is a core part of the game experience, but it is inherently frustrating to be unaware of what's going on around you. This frustration is essentially non-existent as a revenant along with them experiencing virtually no risk to their round.

Their passive state is unassailable, they effectively can't be made vulnerable until they choose to make themselves vulnerable, while they have access to telepathy. In observing revenant behaviour, I've noticed that more than most roles, revenants do not adhere to even the lowest standard of roleplay. They are self-inserts, generally commuicating no differently to how they would speak in OOC or dead chat, and their taunting is a clear expression of their desire to frustrate others for their own amusement. The term griffghost to describe them is a fair one, they are explicitly designed to make people miserable as effectively as possible. Their abilities reflect this, from breaking windows and machines which are incredibly frustrating to departmental security, to using light sources as a weapon to stun and damage people, forcing everyone to work in the dark and further irritate them. I won't go into further detail on the abilities, and instead will focus on the attitudes around the server that lead to this being a popular option.

Across all antagonists, there are some commonalities in behaviour amongst experienced players. The most critical one is that of survival, in order to minimize your personal frustration wasting an antagonist, you need to make your time as an antagonist last as long as possible. This requires strategies that minimize their potential for being harmed, and this is a fairly natural and acceptable state of affairs. The issue is with the increase in tolerance for powergaming and validhunting these strategies have to be mimmaxed to maintain survival. Wizards HAVE to take fireball and jaunt to not be killed. Traitors HAVE to either access more information (thermals) to avoid threats, use anti-stun mechanisms or (most likely) kill everyone quickly with the advantage of surprise. This means these antagonists must effectively spend the majority of their resources on existing for long enough to have fun, and so their most viable method of fun is to efficiently kill as many people as quickly as possible to reduce the threat to themselves, then enjoy 10-20 minutes of dominating the station before the round wraps up. Bringing this back to the revenant, out of all the antagonists, it is the only one with unlimited invisibility and invulnerability, maximizing this aspect of antagonism to it's absolute fullest. Therefore it becomes the obvious choice for players with this mindset.

The next behavioural trait is causing suffering. Not every player adheres to this, but I believe it is the majority-held norm. "Make spaceman horizontal" is a well known enough phenomenon to have a term for it, and murderboning is quite often the default for those capable of executing it. I believe this is a function of the survival mechanism, because in order to create mutual enjoyment in SS13, you generally have to accept mutual risk. If as a wizard you seek out the Captain to have him sell the station to you under threat of violence, this is an objectively riskier option than just instantly fireballing him, taking the spare and roaming around as an all access wizard. Anything but destruction is riskier, so players find joy in the destruction itself and maximize it. This then extends out to non-antagonist behaviour as players essentially idle about looking for opportunities to cause suffering up to the extent the rules allow. Greytiders smash windows and commit light grief to bide time until they can do it for real unrestrained by Rule 1. As we've previously discussed, Revenants are extremely adept at this, and in particular they have the unique ability to not just kill, but torture players. They can telepathically communicate from a position of immunity, they can follow individual players around harassing them for extended periods of time, and like the psychopath taking more joy in slowly picking the legs off a fly one by one over one who splats the fly for utility, they can wear them down through overbearing frustration until they die, culminating in making them far more difficult to revive as a final insult. If your goal is maximizing suffering, revenant is the perfect option.

The final behavioural trait is maximizing personal enjoyment. This is obviously, as a result of the perverse incentives in antagonistic behaviour outlined above, in part fulfilled by causing suffering in others, but there is personal fulfilment available as well. Revenants both enjoy the maximized information of knowing everything about the round and enjoying the observer benefit of vicariously watching the narrative, while also participating in it. You have all the information, you have unlimited freedom of mobility and what you can interact with, and your interactions are all negative, resulting in people paying attention to you and trying to stop you. The nature of the revenants abilities are that it leaves you in a short period of vulnerability. It is in essence a bait for attention and the excitement of "getting away with it" is a key component of the potential for enjoyment in the role. You leave the attacker maximally frustrated as you fade away, while enjoying the feeling of having outplayed and outsmarted an enemy player. This offers a shallow version of the regular antagonists playing with risk, while insulating you from actual risk much of the time. As a traitor, the balance of direct loud antagonism versus stealth is an exciting one, but it does require skill and many players aren't robust enough to find that balance without dying and losing their antag round. Revenant maximizes the potential for these moments for those not robust enough to generally access them.

I think my analysis here is improved by a brief reference to abductors and nightmares, the other two most common requested TC Trades. In the nightmare, again we have an antagonist with a simple goal, invulnerability (though less so), near unlimited information by ignoring darkness and the capacity to grief, though at much greater risk and higher skill requirements. The nightmare is the higher risk higher reward option. Abductors are similar, again having an effective invulnerability and information gathering mechanism (Camera console on the inaccessible UFO and instant teleports), while being able to mechanically grief. Abductors are the lower risk, lower reward option, or the best option for those who care less about the causing suffering aspect of the role.

In conclusion, I think the abandonment of the pursuit of mutual fun as a consequence of the expansion of validhunting and powergaming restricting the freedom of antagonists has resulted in a culture of maximized personal enjoyment through the maximization of suffering in others. I believe this reduces the overal enjoyment of the game as a net, with an unequal distribution based essentially on mechanical robustness. As one of the privileged players at the top of this pyramid thanks to my near decade playing the game and experience with combat, I think it's worth me calling out this problematic behaviour because less robust people who do call it out will probably be dismissed as bitter. I directly benefit from the current state of affairs, but it makes me miserable to observe the state most players engage in. Short, brutal conflicts with minimal interaction except through the code are not in the spirit of the game and limit SS13 to it's base mechanics instead of the social aspect that gives it longevity. I believe rewarding antagonists who take risks that are less self-serving and more open to mutual interactive fun with admin attention and support, as well as restricting validhunting and powergaming would be good starts to begin addressing these problems.

I couldn't really imagine why anyone would try to TC trade for revenant over literally any other antag, but when you put it like this it starts to make sense.

At least in this specific case the problem is self limiting, since revenants are a pretty rare midround spawn and admins can always say no to TC trades. Still the fact it's apparently requested so often kind of sucks.

Revenant is my #1 most traded for thing as a new player and beyond, and my reasoning was that it was fun to transmit messages into minds, convince people to give me bodies, and I felt a lot safer in the sense that I was comfortable with rev so I wouldn't throw away my antag round

belatedly, this is the shittiest take ever. tc trades are awesome and allow players to do really fun gimmicks, or play an antagonist they'd rather play instead of traitor for the 900th time (which helps fight burnout and test mechanics in the case of, say, the heretic rework as an example). it's the closest the average player ever really gets to 'running an event'.

Although it seems tongue-in-cheek, and I have no particular references for this aside from an obituary I will follow with later, it is actually a somewhat accurate description of even our own mental guidance systems, even. For instance, in SERE training, we were shown the "Naeture Walk- Episode 1" parody video as we prepped for outdoors work. It's not inaccurate, per se- but certainly unhelpful in any technical sense. Sometimes, though, what a soldier or airman or anyone needs is a laugh when they're potentially going to war; not just in some jest of 'haha, we're going to kill others', but 'you might die too, so try not to look so glum'. I know I'm criticizing a 14 year old comment, but wow the ignorance hurt a lot.

As a more concrete evidence, the piece was written by Col. George Wilburn Grill, Ret., whose obituary[1] was recently published last year, sadly. It describes how he was a primary installer of these missile systems in their origin, and that he had a sense of humor.
